A Look Back

This photograph shows the present Orange police headquarters building on Lambert Road under construction. Built in 1974, it is the third building to be occupied by the Orange Police Department.

The department was incorporated on July 1, 1939 with Carl Peterson serving as chief of police and Joseph Cummings as first assistant. The department was under the control and jurisdiction of the Board of Selectmen, who appointed all officers. It would be 1947 before the department began to grow with the appointment of six supernumeraries.
