The Amity High School wrestling team placed eighth out of 16 teams Jan. 27 at the Ridgefield Challenge Tournament held at Ridgefield High School. They competed against some of the top teams from New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Four Amity wrestlers won medals in their individual weight classes. Senior captain Matt Rothman placed second at 152 pounds, Justin Griffin placed third at 285 pounds, senior captains Christian Chadwick placed fourth at 113 pounds, and senior captain Sam Keylock placed fourth at160 pounds.
Head Coach Ryan Roddy said, “The entire team wrestled tough, led by captains Christian Chadwick, Matt Rothman and Sam Keylock. Juniors Justin Griffin and Andrew Seaton, sophomores Simon Flaherty and Freshman Josh Foote all had key victories to help the team to an eighth-place finish.
Roddy said the tournament was a great test for his wrestlers before the SCC and State Class L tournaments arrive in the coming weeks. “This gives each wrestler a good idea of the things they need to work on going into the end of the year tournaments,” he said.
