As I write this column, I’ve just celebrated – alongside many of you – the 50th anniversary of our beloved Country Fair. What an exciting and joyful occasion. I had the pleasure of meeting many of you who have worked tirelessly on this fair over the years. The real joy of this town lies in its people, in the way we work together, side by side, to celebrate and preserve all that makes Orange special.
I also had the opportunity to meet several candidates running for election. It was encouraging to see the pride and optimism many of our current elected officials have for Orange.
However, not everyone shares this appreciation for our town or acknowledges how well we are doing. Some seek to radically change Orange, and in my humble opinion, not for the better.
As with any election season, political rhetoric often devolves into a contest of who can hurl the harshest words or stoop the lowest. The Orange Republicans have never subscribed to this approach – and we never will. Our focus has always been, and will continue to be, on ideas, not insults. We believe leadership should be measured by results and vision, not by tearing others down. When differences arise, we don’t resort to personal attacks. Instead, we present clear, substantive policies and a proven record that shows why our path is the better one.
This election cycle, however, we’ve noticed a troubling trend. Many of our Democratic opponents seem more interested in misrepresenting the Republican platform than in presenting their own ideas. As we approach early voting on Oct. 20 and Election Day on Nov. 4, we believe voters deserve an honest, transparent understanding of what the Orange Republican Party truly stands for.
For the past 20 years, Republicans have been entrusted with leading this town – and the results speak for themselves. It’s no coincidence that families – including the Democratic first selectman candidate – chose to move here. They are drawn to the prosperity, stability and quality of life that Republican leadership has cultivated and protected.
At the heart of our platform are four proven pillars:
– Economic development and growth: Economic growth is not a luxury – it’s the engine that sustains a thriving community. When businesses succeed, residents succeed. Growth brings jobs, increases local revenue and eases the tax burden on homeowners. Under Republican leadership, Orange has been proactive, not reactive.
Our Economic Development Commission, based in the Clark Building near Town Hall, is more than a formality: it’s a fully staffed, fully engaged driver of progress. Established in the 1990s under First Selectman Bob Souza and strengthened under the Zeoli administration, the commission has worked closely with the Board of Finance and the Amity Chamber of Commerce to make Orange a destination for both local businesses and national retailers. While other towns struggle to attract investment, Orange continues to grow – thanks to sound planning and steady leadership.
– Strong fiscal management and stewardship: Good governance begins with responsible fiscal management – and Orange Republicans have led the way. While many towns remain financially dependent on Hartford’s inconsistent policies, Orange has remained financially independent and secure.
Our AAA bond rating is more than a score – it’s a reflection of careful stewardship. Our Republican-led Board of Finance has worked tirelessly to balance budgets, keep taxes affordable and invest wisely in the town’s priorities. While economic uncertainty has shaken communities across Connecticut, Orange remains a model of financial stability—thanks to decades of disciplined Republican leadership.
– Tier-one community services: A strong community is defined not just by economic strength but by the services it provides. Republicans have prioritized education, public safety and senior services – because these are investments in our future.
Education is especially important, and that’s why 61 percent of Orange’s $86 million annual budget goes directly to our schools. This investment ensures that our students have the resources, teachers and support they need to succeed. The results are clear: Orange’s schools are among the best in Connecticut.
Beyond the classroom, we are proud to support our senior residents. The High Plains Community Center is not just a building – it’s a hub of connection, activity and care. By strengthening both education and senior services, Orange has become a town where every generation feels valued and supported.
– Keeping Orange green: We are deeply committed to preserving Orange’s rural character and natural beauty. Our identity is tied to our open spaces, parks and 14 active working farms.
Republicans have fought to protect open space, conserve natural resources and maintain a healthy environment for future generations. From hiking trails to fishing areas and safe playgrounds like those at Fred Wolfe Park, we ensure Orange remains a place where families can connect with nature. Economic development and environmental protection are not mutually exclusive—they are partners. Orange can grow while remaining green, rural and true to its roots.
For two decades, Republican leadership has delivered measurable results: steady economic growth, fiscal responsibility, excellent schools and services and a protected natural environment. These are not just talking points – they are the lived experiences of every Orange resident who benefits from safe neighborhoods, thriving schools and a high quality of life.
This election is about trust – who has earned it, who has kept it, and who will continue to uphold it. On Nov. 4, the choice is clear. If you want proven leadership, responsible governance and a community that continues to thrive, then let’s keep Orange Republican strong.
