The Milford Recreation Department is offering a six-week acting class for kids and teens starting in February.
The classes, led by television and film actor Kevin McCormick, are open to kids from 9 to 18 years old. Each class will meet once a week for two hours starting Feb. 13. There are two class times available, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
On weeks one, three and five, two students will be given a scene prior to the first, third and fifth week of class that they will need to rehearse in person (outside of class), over the phone or on the computer or phone via Zoom or FaceTime with their scene partner in preparation for class. It will be the student’s responsibility to understand the scene the best they can, know their lines and bring their energies to the scene. Scenes will be age appropriate, appropriate in content and can be dramatic or comedic.
Students will do a “first work” in week one and will be provided feedback on their scene and work with the actors to understand that scene and what is important to them as the character so they can grow as an actor. In week two, there will be the “second work,” where the class will get into more detail within the scene to bring the scene and the story they are telling “to life.”
After week two, the actors will get a new scene and new scene partner for weeks three and four and then again for weeks five and six.
Students who want to take part in this six-week, on-going scene study class need to know there is some preparation work outside of class; that the class will be fun, but will need students to take the class seriously and come with an open and positive attitude; be respectful of the other actors in the class at all times; and show up for the whole six weeks.
McCormick presently has a recurring role on season three of City on a Hill. He has recently had roles in the movies I Care a Lot and Spenser Confidential. He has also had recurring and guest star TV roles on the shows Gotham, Chicago PD, Blue Bloods, The Blacklist, among others.
McCormick spent 15 years as a middle school teacher and elementary and middle school assistant principal before resigning in 2011 to pursue his acting career full time.
