Philip D. Beach III
Philip D. Beach III, 82, of Oxford, longtime resident of Southbury, and originally from Milford, beloved husband of the late Susan Beach, passed away on March 20, 2025. Born on October 21, 1942 in Waterbury, CT, he was the son of the late Philip Beach II and Barbara Graham.
Phil was a family man above all else in life. He was a doting husband to his beloved wife, Sue. He was a tireless and dependable provider, an intrepid problem solver, and a practical, supportive, and kind patriarch who was always generous of spirit, love and wisdom.
Phil’s interests included gardening and landscape design, and his impeccable horticultural creations often resulted in his yards eliciting much praise from neighbors, and even random passers-by, who would often stop and wax effusive to Phil as he worked past dusk on many a summer night. His decidedly green thumb also resulted in some of the best tomatoes around on an annual basis. He always grew more than he needed for the sole purpose of giving them away to many lucky August recipients.
Phil was an ardent fan of sports, most especially basketball (UConn Huskies men and women), baseball (Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves) and football (New York Giants).
In his younger years, Phil was a passionate basketball player whose dedication and commitment to the game resulted in him playing as a walk-on for the UConn Huskies. He eventually took up golfing and became an avid golfer who never missed an opportunity to play a famous course as his business travels took him all over the country. He never abandoned his roots as an athlete as he continued to exercise 6 to 7 days a week at a local gym up until the very last weeks of his 82 years.
Phil’s passion for his favorite foods often resulted in him driving further than most for such ubiquitous items as pizza, hotdogs, and lobster rolls. And finally, in spite of raising the ire of a few select managers and owners of some chocolate merchants in New England, Phil’s reverence and appreciation for good dark chocolate made him a living embodiment – a nonpareil himself – of the namesake chocolates he seemingly always had on hand. Phil was a remarkably unique true original, who will be missed greatly by many, especially by those who knew him so well.
Philip is survived by his children, Karen Barnes, Philip D. Beach IV, and Jeffrey (Monica) Beach; his grandchildren, J.R. (Carolyn) Barnes, Megan Barnes and her partner, Brett Barrett, Patrick Barnes, Amanda (Christopher Theodore) Beach, and Kelsie (James) Albano; his step great-grandchildren, Adeline and Evelyn; his siblings, Dan (Noreen) Beach and William “Woody” Graham; and his cousin, Leigh (Dottie) Broderick.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, April 5, 2025 for a celebration of life at 10:00 a.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. Interment will follow at Mountain Meadows Cemetery, 117 Mountain Rd, Seymour, CT 06483. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Smilow Cancer Hospital.
Florence G. Berrien
Florence G. Berrien, lifelong resident of Milford, passed away on March 28, 2025. She was born on June 25, 1932 to the late Bell and Marion Janssen Gray. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Robert, Ronald and Walter Gray, her son Allen D. Berrien, her grandson Andrew Bodick, her son-in-law Bill Van Wilgen and her high school sweetheart and former husband Allen G. Berrien. She is survived by her daughters Nancy (Stephen) Bennett of West Cornwall, Laurie Van Wilgen of Branford, Leigh Bak of Milford, grandchildren Katharine Mix, Stephen Bak, Emily (Patrick) Paulson, and great grandson Eli Paulson.
Her childhood was spent in crippling poverty which likely contributed to her amazing work ethic and incredible generosity later in life. She was an excellent student and just an all-around “good kid”, graduating from Milford High School in 1950. She went to work for local builder George McDermott of the Lewis J. McDermott Real Estate Agency during her high school years and ran his office with her trademark efficiency. Whenever we drove her around the neighborhoods in Milford, she delighted in telling us who purchased which house and for how much. We were flabbergasted that she could remember that, as well as the fact that you could buy a really nice cape for $10K back in the day.
She married Allen Berrien in 1953 and they settled on Helwig St. in a historic home that they had moved to that spot to save it from the wrecking ball. It was there that they raised their 4 children next door to their business, Milford Boat Works. She was the consummate mother and homemaker; she could magically stretch a half pound of meat to feed the whole family. We often marveled at how she could make 21 delicious meals a week for a family of six while working full time at the boatyard.
She adored music and it filled our home; it’s doubtful that there were many waking hours when the phonograph wasn’t playing and during Sunday afternoon car rides, she led us in song after song, likely to make up for the fact that a 1963 VW Beetle didn’t come with a radio.
Sea Scout Ship 25 was born in our living room and it’s likely many of the guys came for Mom’s baked goods; she has kept in touch with many of those scouts to this day. She also led a Brownie Scout troop. She was an avid reader and especially loved poetry. We may have been the only kids in 3rd grade who could recite Frost or Kilmer at the drop of a hat. Her love of reading poured over in later life to one of her favorite volunteer activities, reading to her little Chickadees at the Milford Preschool.
She was such a giver. She prided herself on the fact that she donated over 16 gallons of blood during her lifetime and didn’t hesitate to give a kidney to someone when she saw the need.
Her life and her rock was her church family at Mary Taylor Methodist Church, where she faithfully attended for over 80 years. She taught Sunday School, served as Assistant Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Historian, was involved with United Methodist Women, Cashier at the Fair on the Green and sang in the choir for decades. She must have baked thousands and thousands of her signature Chocolate Chip Cookies for nearly every church function. She was the unofficial ambassador for the church before that became the thing to do; if you were new and walked in the door, Flo greeted you, took you back to Fellowship Time and remembered your name the next week. She maintained birthday lists for every church member and many close friends, ensuring they were remembered with a phone call on their special day. Your birthday wasn’t over until you had a call from Flo!
She was named a “Connecticut Treasure” by Gov. Jodi Rell in 2002. Gov. Rell sure hit the nail on the head with that one.
Mom simply made a difference in nearly everything she touched. If there was a need, she filled it. Her life was not always easy, but she navigated it with grace and a quiet inner strength that inspired not only her family but all who knew her.
Her life will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10th at 11 AM at Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church, 168 South Broad Street, Milford, CT. A reception in the church hall will follow.
If you would like to remember Flo, please consider a donation to either Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church at the address above or to Beth-El Center at 90 New Haven Ave, Milford, CT. Or, you could follow her example and make someone feel special today, as that was her hallmark.

Some of her most treasured memories are those of skiing with her family and dear friends at their ski house at Mt. Snow. Susan loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, whether it be a large holiday gathering or a small summer BBQ. Times with their many and treasured friends and extended family were some of her fondest memories and the ones she reminisced about so often. Sue possessed a kind heart, a grateful and peaceful spirit, and a genuine care and compassion for all. Sue would always express gratitude to any small act of kindness she was shown. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all, and will be so very missed. Susan’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the attentive staff at Carriage Green, where she resided for the last several years.

Linus J. Croffy
On March 6th, 2025, my father, Linus J. Croffy, 68, of Milford, passed away. He was the son of the late John and Virginia Croffy. Linus is survived by his beloved wife, Marianne-Winters Croffy; son, Jonathan Croffy; daughter-in-law, Caitlin Croffy; grandchildren, Autumn and Jackson; his siblings, John Croffy Jr. (Theresa), Anne Stocking (Dale), and Gail Griffiths; and sister-in-law, Marcy Croffy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Bruce Croffy and brother-in-law, William Griffiths. He also leaves behind a continual growing list of so many wonderful nephews and nieces that were very near and dear to his heart.
Linus Croffy was born on December 23, 1956, in Jersey City, NJ. He moved to Westport, CT in 1963, enjoyed a wonderful childhood with his siblings and where he made many lifelong friends. He graduated Staples High School in Westport and attended Sacred Heart University where his father John was one of the founders and the former dean of students.
Early on my father developed a passion for Reiki which is a Japanese healing technique that uses gentle touch to promote relaxation and balance one’s energy. He also loved Transcendental Meditation (TM) which promotes relaxed awareness, stress relief, self-development and a higher state of consciousness. TM became popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s as the technique was practiced by celebrities, most prominently the Beatles and the Beach Boys (One of his Favorite Bands).
Linus found his career path led to the United States Postal Service in the Westport and Wilton, CT areas where he started out as a mail carrier and ended it as a desk clerk where he enjoyed many wonderful years. Some would say the job could get repetitive or cumbersome, but my father loved it. He loved interacting with others, chatting about their day and was a true people person. He enjoyed making others smile, telling jokes and was someone who would give you the shirt off his back.
He loved dining out with his wife Marianne, whether it was a new restaurant in the area or an old favorite such as an Outback Steakhouse or an Olive Garden. His other hobbies were music, movies and the lottery. Nothing would stop my father from stopping at the local gas station on the way home from work and playing the play 3 or grabbing a Powerball Ticket. While he had a few modest wins in his life his biggest win would come from his family that he created, the family who love him and that will miss him dearly.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street. Frank A. Downey
Frank A. Downey, 91, of Milford, CT, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Born on June 8, 1933, in Holyoke, MA, Frank lived a life defined by faith, resilience, hard work, philanthropy, and deep dedication to his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank A. Downey and Mildred Mannix Downey, and his sister, Mary Drohan.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Frank cherished his family above all else. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Augusta “Dusty” Downey; his children Kenneth (Nancy), Rick, Diane (Walter), and Chris (Tracey); his beloved grandchildren Laura, Christine, Sara, Patrick, Ryan, Braden, Amanda, Michael, Matthew, Gary, Jessica, and Austin; and his great-granddaughters Zoey and Hailey.
Frank grew up in Holyoke, MA, where he enjoyed playing football and fishing. His high school football career was highlighted by his team winning the Western Massachusetts Football Championship in 1951, which led them to the Peanut Bowl in Georgia on New Year’s Day. He continued his football journey at Amherst College, where he started at left tackle for all four years. His teammates became lifelong friends, and their reunions were always filled with joy and laughter.
Following college, Frank proudly served his country as a jet fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He exhibited incredible leadership skills securing him the “ace” position of his squadron. One highlight of his service was being stationed in England, where he coached the base football team; he loved sharing stories of their undefeated season and flying the team to the European Championship in France. However, Frank always said that his most meaningful moment was meeting the love of his life, Dusty, and the cherished family they built together more than anything.
Frank was a determined entrepreneur, founding and growing three successful companies in the electronics industry:
-Westwood Associates, a sales organization for electronic manufacturers in Western Massachusetts.
-Townsend Industries, a circuit board manufacturing company in Orange, CT.
-Westwood Associates, an international electronic sales and distribution company with offices worldwide.
Frank and Dusty raised their four children in Orange, CT, before fulfilling their dream of living by the water in Milford. Frank retired at age 68, spending his time boating, fishing, enjoying winters in Jupiter, FL, and most importantly, watching his family grow. He took great pride in attending his grandchildren’s special events and sports games.
A man of strong faith, Frank and Dusty were loyal friends and benefactors of Notre Dame High School for over 50 years. Even after their sons graduated, he remained actively involved and served on the board. Their unwavering generosity made an ND education possible for many. His commitment to ensuring as many families as possible could benefit from a Catholic Holy Cross education was truly unmatched. The Downey Family Scholarship Fund supports numerous worthy students every year and has always been at the forefront of their philanthropy.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in Frank’s memory may be sent to Notre Dame High School to support the Downey Family Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to deserving students with demonstrated need. Fortunato “Fred” Favia
Fortunato “Fred” Favia was born December 20, 1969 in the Bronx, New York, and passed away April 1, 2025 leaving behind memories of love and kindness. To those who knew him well, he was known as Fred and he was the beloved son of Carmelo and Maria Favia. As the firstborn, he was quickly entrusted with big brother responsibilities, as he was the eldest of six children.
Fred was always studious, especially at a young age. His mother began studying the Bible when Fred was just 14 years old, and by the time he was 17, Fred began his own study of the scriptures. By the age of 18, his personal study led him to be baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Soon after Fred met the love of his life, Jessica, at the Kingdom Hall and on January 4, 1992, they married starting a beautiful life together. Fred and Jessica were blessed with two daughters, Lauren, born in February 1994, and Lindsey born in January 1998. In 2003, the family would settle in West Haven, Connecticut.
While Fred started his career in Masonry, he eventually worked as a Welder for the Metro-North Rail Road in the Structures department. He was well known at his job, and spent many hours working with and getting to know his co-workers. More than anything, he loved caring for, and spending time with his 2 daughters, wife and dog. He took great pride in caring for his family and handled a copious amount of responsibilities for his family, and extended family. Fred was primarily known as a caretaker and family head, but still had a variety of interests. He was also known to handle his theocratic assignments as well in the congregation. Although a man of many responsibilities, he would still find time to enjoy some leisure time. Fred was especially known for his hospitality. Many Bethelites, friends, and extended family would call Fred and Jessica’s home, their home. Fred enjoyed spending any available time on his hobbies, which included fishing, hunting and sharing his knowledge in construction. His love for cooking was well known, and he took great pleasure in preparing meals for those he cared about. Fred’s sense of humor was infectious, and his presence brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
Fred’s character was marked by his generosity, kindness, and willingness to help others. He was an extremely hard worker. He was always ready to lend a hand and serve those around him – especially his close family – and his warm heart will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Jessica; daughters, Lauren and Lindsey (married to Matthew West); and his siblings: Giorgio (married to Marion, children Mariah, Ashley married to Sean Monaco, and Giorgio Jr.), Giovanna Selca (married to George, children Juliana and Serena), Carmine (married to Christina, children Justina, Vittoria), Joseph (married to Nathalee), Apollonia (married to Derek Juliano). And his mother, Maria. He is preceded in death by his father, Carmelo.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has shown support, attended services, and kept our family in their prayers during this difficult time. We look forward to the day when we can welcome Fred back in the coming New World in perfect health, as promised in Jehovah’s word.
Fred’s legacy of care, love, and generosity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service talk will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 210 Old Grassy Hill Rd, Orange, CT 06477.

David Joseph Gerardi
David Joseph Gerardi, 68, of Milford, CT, beloved husband of Maureen Oliver Gerardi, passed away unexpectedly on March 17, 2025. Dave was born on June 26, 1956, in New Haven, CT to the late Lorraine Mazzei Mulligan.
In addition to his wife of 37 years, Dave is survived by his three children: Morgan McDonald (Daniel), Connor Gerardi (Katie), and Griffin Gerardi (Makayla), and his grandson Miles McDonald, whom he adored. He is also survived by his two sisters, Linda Gibbs and Susan Stout; his mother-in-law, Barbara Oliver; his sister-in-law, Deborah Clifford (James); and his brothers-in-law, Kevin Oliver (Lori), Robert Oliver, and Patrick Oliver (Cynthia). As well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, including his goddaughter, Kaitlin Oliver. Dave was predeceased by his brother, Alan Gerardi, and his parents.
Growing up, Dave lived in Hamden, CT, with his mother Lorraine and stepfather Thomas Mulligan, who raised him as his own. From a young age Dave loved cooking, a passion that he carried throughout his life. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and was a skilled chef for many restaurants, including two of his own. It was while working at Scribner’s, in New Haven, that he met the love of his life. After a chance encounter when Maureen arrived for her evening waitressing shift and Dave was leaving his morning shift, they locked eyes, and the rest is history. Maureen and Dave were engaged nine months into dating and went on to be married in May of 1988 and set their roots in Milford, CT, to raise their family.
Dave’s career transitioned from chef to food and advertising sales, leading to his dream job 18 years ago as a Senior Sales Executive for BG Lubri-Care Distributors. He was consistently one of the top salesmen handling many of their most important customers.
He also had a deep appreciation for bringing his family together, especially over meals he proudly prepared. He loved hosting and cooking the yearly Thanksgiving feast with his famous stuffing and gravy.
Golf was Dave’s passion. He played nearly three times a week with family, friends, or clients. He also enjoyed watching the PGA all weekend long. A true sports enthusiast, he could always be found in his favorite chair rooting for the Rangers, Giants, and Yankees. Though he enjoyed attending games in person, he often joked that he already had the “best seat in the house.”
Above all, Dave’s greatest joy and accomplishment was being a husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his unwavering love and devotion to his family. While he was sometimes a man of few words, his kindness and warmth spoke volumes to those who knew him best.

Ruth had two great callings in her life—spreading the word of God and being a devoted mother. She and her husband answered their calling by joining the Christian & Missionary Alliance in 1955, embarking on a 16-year mission in Thailand. There, Ruth became fluent in Thai and embraced the culture wholeheartedly while sharing her faith and offering aid to those in need. During their time abroad, they adopted their two beloved children, James and Janice, raising them with the same deep love and faith that guided their own lives. In 1970, the family returned to New England, where Ruth and her husband continued their ministry work.
Faith remained the cornerstone of Ruth’s life. She was deeply involved at Calvary Alliance Church in Milford, CT, where she played in a musical quartet, helped run the Senior Citizens Ministry, and volunteered for countless church events. A talented pianist and organist, Ruth’s love for music was unwavering—even when she could no longer play, she invited friends to perform in her home so she could continue enjoying live music.
Beyond her faith and music, Ruth had a generous and nurturing spirit. She lovingly cared for her husband in his later years and had an immense love for animals, sharing her home with cats, dogs, and even a pet monkey named Jingles. Above all, she was a devoted mother. In the words of her children, “We couldn’t have asked for a better mother, and she will be dearly missed.”

Dana P. Hendershott
Dana Hendershott, age 75 of Milford, died peacefully after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was the beloved husband of Anne Hendershott, as well as a devoted father, grandfather, uncle and faithful friend to so many.
Dana was born on October 24, 1949, in Middletown, New York, the son of the late Henry and Katherine Hendershott. A graduate of Santa Cruz High School, Dana graduated from the University of San Francisco where he was a pitcher for the USF Dons and was a USF All-Time leader in wins, ERA, innings pitched, complete games, appearances, and strike-outs. As a sophomore at USF in 1969 he posted a single season record of 1.67 ERA in 21 games. In 1971 he earned an All-American selection, First-Team All-Conference, All-District Honors, and the Green and Gold Loyalty Award. In 1983, Dana was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame, and in 2005, USF named Dana a “Legend of the Hilltop.” Most of Dana’s baseball records still stand at USF.
After graduation, Dana signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played for several years in their Minor League system. It was during his baseball years that he met Anne, his wife of 50 years.
A dedicated employee in the insurance industry, Dana treasured the friends he made throughout his baseball and corporate career and continued to be grateful for their kindness and support.
Committed to service, Dana volunteered much of his time for various charities—including the Human Life Review where he served as a member of the Board. Because of Dana and Anne’s service to the Catholic Church, they were selected by the Hartford Archbishop to become a Dame and Knight of the Holy Sepulcher at a ceremony held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Dana leaves behind his beloved wife Anne and children Heidi and Jonathan and their spouses Kostas and Neena. He also leaves his adored grandchildren Luke, Henry and Hudson, as well as a number of cherished nieces, and nephews. One of the kindest and gentlest men most of us have ever known, Dana leaves a long legacy of love and friendship. He never once complained about the limitations his Parkinson’s Disease imposed even though it limited his mobility and took away his ability to do the things he had so enjoyed—including golf. His family will always be grateful to those treasured friends from baseball and his corporate years who often traveled long distances—some from the West Coast—to visit him throughout the difficult years of his illness when he could no longer travel to visit with them.

On Saturday, March 22, 2025, John Francis Maccone passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. John is predeceased by his parents, John and Violetta Maccone. He is survived by his wife Theodora, and three children, James, John, and Christen.
John was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he met the love of his life, Theodora. His interest in electronics and his outgoing nature grew into a career with Honeywell Fire-Lite Safety. This eventually brought him and his family to the community of Milford, Connecticut, in 1996. While raising his family in Connecticut, John never left Brooklyn behind. In the winter, he brought his wife and children to see the Christmas lights in Dyker Heights and in the summer the family could be found at L&B Spumoni Gardens each with a slice of Sicilian in one hand and spumoni in the other.
John spent his free time restoring cars, turning the house he purchased into a home for his family, volunteering in his community and teaching his children to do the same. His knowledge was astounding and what he did not learn for himself, he learned from watching others. He was always busy, but always willing to lend a hand. Whether you had electrical issues, car troubles, gardening questions, craftsman difficulties, or were just looking for a good place to eat, John would offer his help with a smile on his face.
John’s congeniality was unending. He was often found calling Bingo numbers at Saint Gabriel School or organizing and greeting people at Fantasy of Lights. If you’ve ever attended the Odyssey Festival, John has certainly helped you navigate the parking lot. He assisted with set-up and tear-down of the festival, as well as the many yearly events that took place at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church; and he always brought his pickup truck. John also found time to be involved with the Porsche Club, Habitat for Humanity, and Connecticut Grounds Keepers Association.
John will be remembered for his enthusiastic pursuit of new projects, always having a quip to make people laugh, and being able to name almost any song title and artist within a couple seconds of listening. Alyce Mae White Richmond
Alyce M. (White) Richmond, 98, entered into eternal rest on March 23, 2025 at Yale New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus, with family by her side. Born in Springfield, MA, Alyce graduated from Ludlow High School and earned her registered nurse’s degree from the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She was a member of the school’s final U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps class, which trained registered nurses to serve in the U.S. military and public hospitals. While in nursing school, Alyce met the love of her life, Bill Richmond, when he was stationed at the Boston Naval Yard and serving as a submarine corpsman. After they married, Alyce became a loyal military wife, and she and her growing family lived on or near Naval bases in Massachusetts, Virginia, California, Maine, and Connecticut. Upon settling in East Haven, CT, Alyce worked as a night nurse at Olin Mathieson Corporation for one year before her youngest daughter, Susan, was born. Alyce later worked at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital’s hemodialysis unit for two years. In 1970, St. Raphael’s Hospital hired Alyce to establish and manage the hospital’s first hemodialysis unit. She was a fantastic cook, and enjoyed watching TV cooking shows and trying new recipes. Alyce was also an avid craftsperson, and sewed many of her daughters’ clothes and made beautiful quilts. She also created memorable photo albums and boxes with luxurious fabrics, ribbons, and notions, which she either gifted to family and friends or sold in local consignment shops. A woman of deep faith, Alyce became a Catholic in her 40s and was a devout member of Our Lady of Pompeii Church in East Haven, CT. She faithfully attended morning Mass each day for many years and believed in the power of prayer. She was a Minister of Care for the church, and brought comfort and communion to homebound people. She also helped prepare food for other church members to deliver to a homeless shelter in New Haven. In addition, Alyce used her superb imagination and organizational skills to create beautiful dolls’ clothing, Christmas ornaments, vintage Santa Clauses complete with handmade gifts, and other special items to sell at the church’s annual holiday bazaar. In 2017, the Archbishop of the Hartford Diocese awarded Alyce the St. Joseph Medal for her outstanding service to the church. Above all, Alyce was a devoted and steadfast wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to all.
