William “Bill” Doyle

William “Bill” Doyle, 85 of Milford passed away on July 21st surrounded by his loving family after a brave, quick unexpected fight with acute myeloid leukemia. Bill was born on December 7, 1939 in Fall River, MA to the late Frank Doyle and Bertha Coulter Doyle.

Bill moved to Milford when he was two years old and graduated from Milford High School where he starred on the golf team. He then served in the Army and was stationed in Germany during his duty. When he returned to the States, he attended and graduated Barton College in North Carolina where he played golf and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.

Bill met and married his future life partner Susanne in Milford. They married and had two children and raised them in the Heatherstone part of Milford. He worked most of his career as a Purchasing Manager for large telecommunication companies.

What Bill enjoyed most was being around his four grandchildren. He did not miss a game, whether it was basketball, baseball, lacrosse, cross country, or golf. He watched them play from elementary age to high school age. It brought him so much joy to watch them play. Golf was always one of his passions, he loved to play and when things went wrong it was never his fault. It was the club or the balls fault! He was a life long Red Sox fan and never missed a Mens or Womens basketball game on TV.

Bills other passion was travelling with Susanne. They enjoyed cruises Mediterranean and Caribbean, traveling internationally, vacation homes with family and friends, as well as weekend getaways. His most cherished vacation was the one he lived every day. He moved fifteen years ago to Woodmont to be near the water, a house that Bill anointed “The Doyle Beachhouse”. He enjoyed his walks by the beach, talking to anyone who would listen, but in recent years he just loved being out on the deck watching the water and visiting with all the neighbors.

The Doyle family would like to thank the staff at Yale New Haven Smilow Cancer Center for their caring and professionalism in his final days. They also thank the home health aides who have taken care of Bill for the past several years. They greatly appreciate their care and understanding.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife Susanne Doyle, daughter Samantha Latz (Greg) and son Trevor Doyle (Katherine). His brothers Peter and David (Eileen). Grandchildren Jackson and Faith Doyle and Ainsley and Graham Latz.

John “Big Wig” Helwig Jr.

It is with heavy hearts and great respect that we announce the passing of John Henry Helwig Jr., affectionately known to many as Big John or Big Wig — the founder and original driving force to multiple business on Bridegport and New Haven Ave, originally Helwig’s Café and John Henry’s, and of course now Big Wig’s Sports Bar. John passed away on July 2, 2025, after a long illness. He was 73 years old.

John was born on August 7, 1951, in New Haven, Connecticut, to John Henry Helwig Sr. and Vivian Marie (Moshier) Helwig. He grew up in Milford, where his legacy would take root and thrive. He was the proud brother of Katherine Wise (who predeceased him) and Richard Helwig. Married in 1991 to the love of his life Rose Marie and the loving father of John Helwig III and Melissa Helwig, will proudly and truly miss his existence every day continuing his legacy. He also leaves behind a huge extended family with many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends — people who knew the depth of his loyalty, generosity, and love.

John attended Central Grammar School and graduated from Milford High School in the class of 1969. Even as a boy, his work ethic was unmatched — delivering newspapers for the Milford Citizen, New Haven Register, and Bridgeport Post; pumping gas at the Flying A on Cherry Street; and working at the First National grocery store all before he turned 18. After high school, John served in the Connecticut National Guard for six years, proud to wear the uniform and do his part following a family of service.

He was also a proud member of the Milford Elks and the Kiwanis Club for 20 years, where his passion for community and service always shone through. John was always involved with any school functions at Amity where his children attended school. You could find him behind the snack bar or holding the pylons for the Youth football games. Wherever he was needed he never hesitated to help. Blazing the trail with the Lacrosse community he showed the game how to tailgate the Milford way.

But to truly understand John Helwig, you had to meet him — and once you did, you never forgot him. Big John wasn’t just a guy with a bar — he was the bar. He was the soul of the room, the handshake at the door, the booming laugh in the crowd. He believed in second chances, and in community. He gave opportunities to people who needed them, listened to every story, and never let his doors — or his heart — close to anyone in need. His name became a staple in Milford. People may not have known who the mayor was , but they sure knew John Helwig. He was a hometown legend, the kind of man whose impact ripples far beyond what any of us can measure. His legacy lives on in every plate of wings served, in every regular who pulls up a stool at Big Wigs, and in every laugh that echoes across the room he built. This isn’t a goodbye. It’s a salute. Legends never die, Born to be Wild.

Friends and family are invited to gather on Saturday July 12, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home

107 Broad Street, Milford, CT. We welcome all who respected and shared memories with Big John to gather with us in honoring his legacy for the wake service.

Big Wigs will remain open during regular hours (11:00 AM – 2:00 AM) to celebrate the legend himself. An after-party in Big John’s honor will follow the services — details to come.

Robert Jerome “Bob” Lukas

Robert Jerome “Bob” Lukas, 78, of Milford, CT, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, after a brief illness. Born March 11, 1947 in Milford, he was the eldest child of the late Jerome and Mildred Ann (nee Chernock) Lukas. Bob was a lifelong Milford resident, growing up on the Pond Point Avenue farmland his grandparents, Joseph and Anna (nee Koczan) Lukacovic, established around 1920. He was the last remaining Lukas on Pond Point Avenue and believed to be the last surviving original resident of the same.

Bob developed a strong work ethic early in life as a dedicated son and helper to his parents and siblings. As a boy, he naturally learned to farm the many vegetables and fruit trees on the property and care for animals including pigs, a cow and any dogs and barn cats that made their home there. He was an animal lover and knew how to communicate with them.

The son of an engineer, he enjoyed mechanics, fixing and building things, especially cars. While attending Milford High School, Bob made many close friends who shared these interests. Together, they built and worked on hotrods, including one called the Termite, that they raced on weekends at the Dover Drag Strip in New York. After graduating from Milford High in 1965, Bob continued to collect and build cars, including an anniversary gold 1962 Chevy Impala SS, a white 1962 Chevy Impala and a 1940 Chevy Sedan Delivery. He and his car crew remained close throughout his life and he enjoyed trips to the Englishtown, New Jersey NHRA Summer Nationals.

In 1966, while working as a delivery person at Western Meat Market in Milford center, Bob met the love of his life, Susan, a cashier there who grew up in the Devon borough of Milford. They married in 1969 and by 1973, had two daughters. With the help of family and friends, Bob f inished building their house on a piece of the original Lukas farmland they were gifted by his parents. They moved in with their small family in 1974 and he resided there with his wife until his passing.

Bob was a collector of things and embodied the Yankee farmer esthetic in every sense. The house on Pond Point Avenue was well known and recognized for the old cars in the driveway, many tools in the garage and machines in the backyard. Friends and acquaintances would often stop to talk if they saw Bob outside as they drove by. If they didn’t stop, they would beep and he would raise an arm to wave hello, whether or not he knew who it was, as it happened so frequently. A large garden of many vegetables, strawberries and corn spanned the property behind both his house and that of his parents on Pond Point Avenue, and he maintained it for many years with his father. Building his house and maintaining his property was a source of pride and joyous memories for Bob, his wife and his children.

Bob’s knowledge and affinity for mechanics, in addition to his degree from the Connecticut School of Electronics in New Haven, led him to begin his career as a salesperson for Gilmart Auto Parts in 1968. Soon after, he became a sales representative for Mayflower Kenworth in Milford, where he worked for over 20 years. Before retiring in 2017, Bob worked briefly for Southern Connecticut Freightliner in Branford and then completed his career with another 20 years at Tri-State Diesel in East Windsor. He was well known in the trucking industry for his expert knowledge and ability to obtain truck parts, and his willingness to go out of his way to help customers. He developed many lasting friendships with haulers all over the country, who called on him with parts questions and to check in long after he retired.

For all his accomplishments, Bob was happiest with his family and often expressed his pride in his “ladies” to friends and on social media. He was the biggest supporter of the women in his life and all of their endeavors, empowering and encouraging them to be self-sufficient, pursue education and to always speak their minds.

Bob was the beloved husband of Susan (nee Nunno); loving father to daughters Kristin and Kathryn and son in-law Anthony Cocchia; and grandfather to cherished granddaughters Kalyn and Kensye Cocchia. He will be deeply missed, and treasured memories of him and his life of integrity will be his legacy.

Visitation will be Friday, August 1 from 9:00 to 11:00am at Gregory Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Ave., Milford. Mass will follow at 11:30am at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 70 Gulf St., Milford.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that any donations be made in Bob’s memory to a charity Bob supported, such as the ASPCA or the Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of your choice.

Debra A. Nicoletti

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Debra A. Nicoletti on July 29, 2025.  Having met 63 years ago as next-door neighbors, Debbie was the best friend and soulmate of Leonard Nicoletti.  She was the proud mother of Kristen (Andy) Teshoney and Sharra (Josh) Cox and adored grandmother of Jenna and Drew Teshoney and Chelsea and Carly Cox.  She was the daughter of the late Donald and Marcy Grande Lewis and is also predeceased by her only brother Gary Lewis.

Debbie’s professional career spanned decades, first at SNET as a business-to-business Yellow Pages sales executive, and then after “retiring” she spent another 18 years working at Connex Credit Union in Orange, CT as a teller. Ever patient and caring, her reputation led to a following of customers that even now continue to reach out. Nothing in life was treasured more than the memories made year after year in Debbie’s Happy Place, her annual trip to Orange Lakes in Kissimmee, FL.  Surrounded by family and all the fun things Orlando offered, including stops to a gift shop or twelve, Debbie looked forward to every trip even before the current one ended.

Hours for visitation will take place on Sunday, August 3rd, from 3 to 6 PM at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green.  On Monday morning, a prayer service will begin at the funeral home at 10:00. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers and because Debbie’s favorite thing was to make sure no one ever left her house hungry, we would ask that donations be made in her name to WHEAT www.wheatpantry.org to ensure those in need are fed.

Tania was educated in France, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University, respectively. Tania taught French language, literature, and culture to several generations of Connecticut students at the elementary level at the Foote School of New Haven, and secondary levels at a Magnet school in Bridgeport, and at Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge, CT. At Amity, she was a Master Teacher and active in the American Association of Teachers. As such, she had the added responsibility to prepare university students in their fourth year of studies to get certified to teach. More than a ‘mere’ teacher, she was a true force of nature, an unquenchable source of energy and inspiration, able to reach students of every aptitude and temperament. With her training and encouragement, some of them went on to win national competitions in French. Over the course of her long career, she touched the lives of many hundreds of students.

A naturally-gifted linguist, she knew six languages, and spoke three of them with complete fluency. In the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, she was a frequent guest at New Haven house-parties, where she would appear in cocktail dresses she sometimes made herself. Those who knew her will recall the lively stories she would tell, sprinkling them with poems, songs, and stories from many cultures. She loved music, entertaining informal audiences with her singing ability, she studied piano, and she could draw well in pen and ink.

Tania led a busy but private life in retirement. She spent hours in her organic kitchen garden, growing and preserving uncommon fruits such as white, red and black currants, gooseberries, and quince, along with apples, and cherries. She knew the art and science of good cooking. She was an accomplished fiber artist, gifted in knitting, crochet, embroidery, quilting, and making hooked rugs.

She was preceded in death by her sister Nina McNamara of Ridgewood, New Jersey, her husband Samuel Shansky, and her daughter-in-law Ann Philip.

She is survived by her son, Charles Shansky of Onsala, Sweden, her daughter, Sandra (Sandy) Shansky Whittington (Rankin) of Lenoir, North Carolina, her granddaughters Molly Whittington (Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Danielle Whittington (partner William Stowe) of Hamden, Connecticut, her grandson, Michael Shansky of Billdal, Sweden, and two great-grandchildren Theodore and Oscar Blumberg of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, additionally, her nephews and nieces Brien McNamara, Bruce McNamara, Michele Butcher, Charles (Chuck) Young, Marilyn Young, and Martin Young, her cousins Véronique Compain, Jean Robichon, Catherine Chvabo and other family in France, and her dear friend John Kirby of Miami, Florida.

A memorial service is planned for some time in 2026.

In lieu of flowers or trees, donations can be made to the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, Connecticut because “they were here first.”

William “Skip” Thom(p)son Ziebell

William “Skip” Thom(p)son Ziebell, aged 81, beloved husband of Marsha Ziebell of Milford, passed away on July 9, 2025, at his home in Milford after a long battle with Interstitial Lung Disease. He courageously fought as long as he could to be with his family; as his wife was the anchor that held him through the tides, he was the anchor that held her and his family.

Born on July 21, 1943, to the late William J. Ziebell and Mary Emily (Grove-Brogie) Ziebell. Skip was known for his sense of humor, his work ethics, his knack for storytelling (he did not need to kiss the Blarney Stone, but he did), and his activism. He was a man who found his greatest joy and purpose within the walls of his home and the work he did within the Milford Community.

Skip was a founding member of the Irish Heritage Society of Milford, He helped to initiate the Silver Sands Homeowners Association which created the Blight Committee that cleaned up the community, and he had a major hand in implementing Silver Sands State Park; honoring the previous community that once stood there, and preserving the wildlife/LI sound. Skip was a “jack of all trades”, and gave much of himself to volunteer work and helping others whether through the Salvation Army, the Beth-El Shelter, or the many committees he sat on. Skips heart and soul was being a Teamster his entire life, the brotherhood meant a lot and the friendships he created through that brotherhood stood until the end. He was a collector of many things, but his pride and joy was his El Camino that he restored all the while creating memories with his loved ones, and his Chevy SSR which was his dream car.

In addition to his loving wife, Skip leaves behind his children William Joseph Ziebell (Angie Ziebell), Marcellette Ziebell, and John Ziebell (LeeAnn Ziebell) and his granddaughter Katharine Ziebell, whom he treated as his own. He also leaves his grandchildren, Sage & Haven Ziebell, Ashley Massimo & Bobby Dale Hardy, Alicia Krieder & Emalee Alexander, Jonathan, Daniel, Joseph, & Benjamin Ziebell, his great grandchildren, Noah & Ava Krieder and Luca & Estella Massimo and his two siblings Wendy Griffin (George Griffin) & Margaret “Peggy” Manley and many nieces and nephews. Skip was predeceased by his daughters, Carol Kyler and Evelyn Ziebell, and his siblings, Edmund Lewis, Evelyn Jordan, Patricia Deetz, Pearl Lorraine Post, Sandol Astrausky, Diana Lewis Ziebell Thompson, Sonny Thompson, and Arthur Thompson.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at 10 a.m. in Saint Gabriel Church (St Raphael Parish).
