Jessica F. Braun Ciola
Jessica Frances Braun Ciola, 46, of Bethany passed away into eternal rest on November 25, 2023. Born on December 24, 1976, in Milford, she was the daughter of Edward Braun and Karen Acheycheck.
Jessica spent her early childhood years on Bayview Beach in Milford, Connecticut. As she grew older she attended Laurelton Hall for high school where she was known as a force of nature. Jessica excelled in track and field, especially in the high jump and short-distance sprints. After high school, she continued her track and field career at Sacred Heart University while studying English Literature. Shortly after Jessica started Sacred Heart she fell deeply in love with John Ciola. Jess built her dream home in Bethany and had three beautiful children Shauna, Jenna, and Kyle. Jessica was an incredibly intelligent woman and she craved stimulation and constant growth so she founded MPOWER Studio, a workout center designed for women to own their power and strength. After many successful years at MPOWER Studio, Jess moved forward with her fitness career at the JCC Fitness Center.
It did not take long for Jess to become fully immersed in the JCC community, radiating her positive vibrant energy to every member whom she came across. Jess worked as a personal trainer and director for the JCC; she changed hundreds of lives with her charismatic energy. She had a unique process that did not just focus on weight loss, but full mind, body, and soul wellness. Jess wanted to reach more people outside her community so she recently started a fitness education app called REGAIN. This is where she focused her commitment to continued learning and strength by teaching people how to regain strength through whole-body wellness. Over 25 years in the BOW she built a community of love and family. Jess was curating a new business, running the JCC fitness center, and was a Mom to three but she always found time to visit with her cousins, have a beer with friends in Maine, and cook lasagna for her family.
Jess found peace in being with her people. She would travel to Colorado to ski with Shauna and fill her fridge with homemade food, snuggle with Jenna and talk about the world, and have frequent backyard chats with her son Kyle about his recent welding projects. You would often find Jess dancing in the kitchen to foo fighters or reading a book in her grandmother’s chair with a cup of tea. She loyally cared for her three Great Danes and her two cats. Jess always had love and healing in her heart. She loved truly and, as hard as she could in every moment. She was a one-of-a-kind woman, she cherished her people, she would hold her people tight, and she loved with everything she had.
Jessica leaves behind her grandmother Mary Braun (101), her father and mother Edward Braun (72) and Karen Sorenson (70), her husband Christopher Scott (49), and her three children Shauna (25), Jenna (22), and Kyle Ciola (19). Her two step-children Alexa (21) and Sierra Scott(18), her Braun, Fahey, and Acheycheck Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins and her three beloved dogs and two cats Beyla, Shea, Indy, Bear, and Delilah. Services will be held on December 6th, 2023.

Martha A. Fallanca
MSGT Richard C. Finn
MSGT. Richard C. Finn, 65, of Milford, Connecticut, beloved husband of Connie (Toledo) Finn, passed away on November 20, 2023. Born on January 24, 1958, in Schenectady, New York, he was the son of the late Charles Finn and Marjorie (Roberts) Finn.
Richard served in the United Stated Marine Corps for 21 years. His job as a Marine was Helicopter Mechanic and CH53E Helicopter Crew Chief. He served in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He was also a drill instructor and retired as a Master Sergeant and Helicopter Maintenance Chief.
After retiring from the United States Marine Corps, he had a long, successful career at Sikorsky Aircraft and NAVAIR, primarily as an Aviation Logistics Engineer. He retired from NAVAIR in February of 2023 to spend more time with his beloved wife, and his grandchildren, whom he loved more than life itself.
Everyone who knew Rick would say that he is one of a kind. The type of person to give you the shirt off of his back, he was always helping others – whether it was donating to various charities, picking his grandkids up from school, giving a stranger a ride to work, or just being there to listen. He loved to go bowling with his wife, watch old war documentaries, teach his grandchildren about world history, spit off random sports facts that nobody asked for, and most of all – he loved to be around his family.
Rick didn’t have children of his own, but when he married his wife Connie, he quickly became a step-dad. Becoming a step-dad to a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old is not an easy job. But to know Rick is to love him, and that is exactly how his children felt. He dedicated his entire life to his family. When his first grandbaby, Sadie, was born – he was forever changed. If you ask anyone to tell you something about Rick, the first thing they would say was that he loved his grandbabies more than anything. He was always showing everyone pictures of them and talking about them any chance he got. He was there for every sporting event, every graduation, every dance recital and every little or big milestone. He was always there, and he will be deeply missed.
Richard is predeceased by his father, Charles Finn, his brother Derek and his sister Diane. In addition to his beloved wife, Connie, Richard is survived by his adored children, Alisha LaDore (and her husband Tom) and Matthew Schlenk (and his companion Emily Weller). Richard also leaves behind his most precious grandchildren, Sadie, Parker, Hudson and Blake (and his granddog Rocky), his mother, Marjorie, his sisters, Laura and Pam and several nieces and nephews. Gone, but never ever forgotten. We will make it our mission every day to talk about him, share memories, and keep his spirit alive.
Friends and family may call from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 BROAD ST., MILFORD, CT. Interment will be private.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, immediately following call hours, at 12:30 p.m. at Saint Mary Church (Precious Blood Parish) 70 Gulf St., Milford, CT. Military Honors will commence at the conclusion of mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Diana Elizabeth Edelman Kleiner, affectionally “DEEK”, passed away peacefully on November 12 at the age of 76. She was an art historian known worldwide for her expertise on the art and architecture of the ancient Romans.
Diana was the Dunham Professor of History of Art and Classics at Yale University, where she taught from 1980 to 2020. She loved her subject and her students. In the classroom, she was known for her dynamic lectures and colorful wardrobes. As the Founding Director of Open Yale Courses, she trailblazed new methods of teaching online. In the early 2000s, at a time when most were scared to share their scholarly work online, she dared to be different and created beautiful digital courses that touched countless students far beyond Yale. Through her immortal online lectures, she left a permanent legacy across the globe.
Her online students frequently sang her praises. Learners sometimes logged on from remote villages with limited internet connectivity. She stayed up late on most nights chatting in online message boards and building personal relationships with admiring students.
Diana loved to travel, especially to Rome, and encouraged her students to go as well. She believed that learning should be hybrid—both in-person and online—many years before the world discovered it. Her excursions were not just about the obvious tourist sights. They were about experiencing all the nooks and crannies of both the ancient and modern city of Rome. She proudly guided students not only to the Top 10 Monuments but also to the Top 10 Gelaterias.
Diana dedicated much of her scholarly life to and completed seminal work on Roman women, including the ground-breaking exhibition “I Claudia: Women in Ancient Rome.” She is also the author of Cleopatra and Rome, which opened a new perspective on one of the most intriguing women who ever lived. In dedicating her life to an ancient society ruled by male emperors, she gave a voice to Roman women and introduced them to the world.
Her accomplishments are too many to list, but there are several more that deserve mention. She is the author of numerous books and articles on Roman art in its political and social context, including Roman Sculpture (1992), which remains the fundamental reference on the subject. In 2014, she created the magical, interactive e-book, Roman Architecture: A Visual Guide, which includes maps, geolocation links, and more than 250 photographs, most of them taken on her own trips to Europe. Diana was the first woman to chair Yale’s Classics Department; the first female Head of Pierson College; and from 1995 to 2003, Deputy Provost for the Arts with responsibility for arts, divinity, and new media.
Diana earned her B.A. at Smith College in 1969, and her M.A., M. Phil., and Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1970, 1974, and 1976.
She is the daughter of Hilda and Morton Edelman, whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her husband Fred, son Alex, and grandchildren Teddy and Samantha. She was a devoted mother who put her son above anything else and taught him that hard work and creativity can be an unstoppable combination.

Family was most important to Aunt Mary Lou. She was dedicated to each and every one of us, and we felt her love and support daily whether it be a simple call or text, making her famous potato salad for a family gathering, or being our “Uber Driver”. Driving meant time with her family, especially her great nephew and nieces, who affectionately referred to her as ‘GRuber’ (great aunt Uber). Mary Lou was a proud ‘Great Great’, and a fixture at every family event. She was also affectionately known as Aunt Mimi by some of her grand nieces. She loved her Pinot Grigio with ice and lots of laughs. It is very ironic that Aunt Mary Lou left us on Thanksgiving Day as we are all incredibly grateful for her, the unconditional love she showed us, and the impact she had on all of our lives. Walter “Bucky” Symanski
Walter “Bucky” Symanski, 79, of Milford, entered eternal rest on November 26, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He was reunited in time to celebrate the holidays with his beloved wife of 56 years, Judith “Judy” Symanski, as well as his parents, the late Raymond and Viola (Porter) Symanski.
Bucky was a Milford “beach kid” through and through. He was born at home around the corner from Walnut Beach where he grew up with his 5 siblings above the family business, the “Hometown Bakery.” Young love then lured Bucky over to the shores of Fort Trumbull where Judy would spend summers with her mom and dad. The name of her father’s first beach cottage was called “Lucky Break,” and Bucky once remarked that it was the luckiest break for HIM because that cottage brought Judy into his life. Summers filled with sandcastles, carousel rides, frozen custard, and roller skating at Smith’s Wonderland cemented Bucky and Judy’s love for each other. Following a brief separation when Bucky served overseas in the Airforce, he returned home, and their 63-year love story resumed with a proposal. Fittingly, the “beach kids” danced to “A Summer Place” at their wedding, and decades later they would still enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk where they had fallen in love in their youth.
Bucky was a graduate of Milford Academy and spent over 40 years working as a structural steel supervisor for Ironworkers Local 424. In his spare time, he was also a terrific athlete (enjoying many summers playing softball for his favorite hometown haunt, the Redwood Restaurant); a fantastic cook (Bucky’s stuffed mushrooms are legendary!); a doting animal lover (his kitty-companions and grand-pups were all spoiled rotten.); and an avid fisherman (Bucky had the sea in his soul. He was a fixture at the local beaches in his never-ending quest to catch the “The Big One!”). He relished the opportunity to share these personal passions with others and spoke proudly of his professional career and the many skyscrapers he had a hand in building.
But, by far, the thing that Bucky was most proud of building, was his family. His love for his three daughters ran deep until his very last breath. He welcomed his sons-in-law with joy, and a touch of relief when he was, at last, no longer outnumbered by “his girls.” He was a much-loved “baby brother” and a treasured “Uncle Buck.” But it was the title of “Grandpa” that brought him the most joy. Bucky shined brightest in his later years as he lovingly assumed this role and shared countless treasured traditions with his grandkids – including decades of family vacations at his cherished Chalk Pond “happy place,” where later this summer his ashes will join Judy’s ensuring that both Grandma and Grandpa will forever be a part of the fun.
Bucky died as he lived – surrounded by love. He is survived by his children, Tracy (Kenneth) Fratarcangeli, Janis (Frank) Tondora, and Tiffany (Alex) Beck; his grandchildren, Alyssa (Sean) Keating, Nicholas (Emma) Fratarcangeli, Caleb and Rylee Tondora, and Greyson, Dylan, and Wyatt Beck; his siblings, Virginia “Lee” Ross, and Roy, Jan, and Mary Symanski; and his many nieces and nephews. Bucky was predeceased by his siblings Alan “Butch” Symanski, Judith (Richard) Schwarzenberg, and Al Ross.
Friends and family may call from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 BROAD ST., MILFORD, CT. His family will share memories of Bucky in a brief memorial service beginning at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Paw Project to help keep fur-babies and their caregivers together until the end.
Bucky is being compassionately cared for by Cody-White Funeral Home, to leave online condolences, please continue to the Tribute Wall tab.
Rev. Hal Vink
The Rev. Harold Van Wely Vink, 90, peacefully passed into the loving arms of his Lord Jesus Christ surrounded by his family on November 30, 2023, after suffering a stroke. Known as Hal since his college days, he was born on September 15, 1933, to Gertrude, at home in Carmel, NY, birthed by his father, Dr. Garrett Vink. Along with attending schools in Carmel, Hal also went to the St. Thomas Boys’ Choir School in Manhattan for 2 years, embedding in him a lifelong love for music. Upon graduation from high school, Hal went to Union College in Schenectady, NY, where initially he was a pre-med major. While there he was a “loyal Sigma Chi” fraternity brother, active with the chapel, and involved with the theater. Having heard a calling from God to “Heal the soul rather than the body,” as his father put it, Hal changed his major to theological studies. It was through his participation in a play with an interfaith group that he met his beloved wife Jane Santer. On June 23 of this past year they celebrated 67 years of marriage. Upon graduation from Union College, Hal became a student at Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, CT. As a student pastor, he worked at Methodist Churches in Ansonia and Thomaston, and after graduating with his Master’s Degree in Divinity in 1959, he became the pastor of the New Milford, CT, Methodist Church. It was there that Hal and Jane’s 3 children, Martha, Paul, and Elizabeth, were born. Hal later served the Methodist Church in Great Neck, NY; Bushwick Parish in Brooklyn, NY; St. John’s United Methodist Church in Elmont, NY; and Nichols United Methodist Church, Trumbull, CT. In 2000 Hal and Jane retired from Nichols, and moved to Milford, CT. In his retirement, Hal continued to serve God at the Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church in Milford, where he was the Assistant Pastor for a number of years, leading Prayer and Healing Services and Bible Studies, counseling, preaching, singing in the choir, and many other activities. He was not about to let retirement or a loss of vision stop him from serving the God he loved!
Hal’s concern for the community and his creativity were always at work. In Bushwick he helped establish a Headstart Program for children. While there he welcomed both Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and Coretta Scott King as speakers. Working with a wonderful staff, Hal was instrumental in the creation of a musical program called “The Way Out,” which resulted in a record album by their choirs. At St. John’s he established a church theater group, The St. John’s Players, which put on many well-received plays and musicals. He wrote one of his own, called “Bible Folk” and directed the youth group in the musical “Godspell.”
Throughout his career, Hal was involved in many United Methodist ministries beyond the local church. He worked with youth from all over the New York Conference at their church camps, Quinipet and Epworth, was the Conference Youth Coordinator for the New York Annual Conference, and served as Chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry, among many other Conference activities. In addition, Hal led several trips to the Holy Land with his churches, and took youth on mission trips with the Appalachia Service Project. In his retirement, Hal and Jane traveled to Nicaragua to work with impoverished families rebuilding their lives. They also were part of two delegations from Mary Taylor to work with the Volunteers in Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi, after Hurricane Katrina. Known for his singing and playing, Hal was part of a ukulele band which played at local nursing homes and community events.
Hal also became very involved with the International Interdenominational Christian group, Tres Dias, now known in Fairfield County as “Footsteps in the Sand.” He was a Spiritual Director on many weekends both in the US and in England, sharing his love of Christ, his gift of song, and his delight in “holy rowdiness.” He touched countless lives with his faith, his wisdom, and his joy in living.
Hal enjoyed traveling, and took his family on wonderful vacations every summer, camping on Cape Cod, and going to “Vink Island,” the special place on Ashby Lake in Canada that his father and Garrett’s best friend Jack found in their quest for excellent fishing. That became a favorite pastime for Hal as well. He and Jane also enjoyed trips to Europe, including the Netherlands, where his father’s family originated, Arizona, the Badlands, and other interesting places. Hal loved music, and was known for his singing in churches, on retreats, and in other venues. He imparted his love of music to his children, sharing everything from classical to Gospel to rock and roll. One of Hal’s favorite hobbies in his retirement was gardening. He loved having his hands in God’s good earth, and his dahlias proved he didn’t need to have perfect vision to grow gorgeous flowers. Though he couldn’t see them well, he shared their beauty for others to enjoy.
In recent years, life was more challenging, but Hal rarely complained. He whistled and sang throughout his days; he loved sitting on his back deck and taking “laps” around his home; he appreciated the help he received from others, including his devoted wife Jane, along with church members and friends. Hal loved Jane whole-heartedly to the end, as well as the rest of his family. He truly was a happy soul, and he is deeply missed.
The family was delighted to celebrate Hal in September with a 90th birthday party at the church, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was able to bask in the love that people have felt for him, and that was a gift. The family is thankful for all who gave their support and love to Hal throughout his many (but not enough for his family and friends) years. There are abundant stories that could fill multiple books!
Hal is survived by Jane, their children Rev. Martha E. Vink, Paul T. Vink (Christine), and Elizabeth J. Costello (Michael); his sister, Gari Anne Banks; his brother Walter Vink (Lee); his grandchildren Julia, Bethany, Timmy, and Diana; sister-in-law Ellen Angus (Jim); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his chosen family Ana, Frank, and Alynne. He was predeceased by his parents and step-parents, Garrett and Betty Vink, Gertrude and Gordon Christensen, his brother-in-law Skip Banks, and his niece Kathy Vink Green. No doubt upon his heavenly arrival, after Jesus said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant,” he was given a grand “welcome home” party by all his loved ones, with much singing and laughter.
Calling Hours for Hal will be Friday, January 5, 5:00-8:00pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 North Broad St, Milford, CT 06460. A short prayer service at 7:30 will be live-streamed on their webpage, www.codywhitefuneralservice.com. Hal’s Celebration of Life will be on Epiphany, January 6, at 11:00am at the Mary Taylor United Methodist Church, 168-176 South Broad St, Milford, CT 06460. It will be broadcast here: http://vimeo.com/event/1172011. A reception will follow at the church. It is a fitting day to celebrate one whose light shined so brightly!
