Obituaries from the Feb. 12, 2026 Issue

Raymond Joseph Barba

Raymond Joseph Barba, 62, of Milford, beloved husband of Lisa Barba, passed away on January 9, 2026. Born on July 16, 1963 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Joseph Barba and Marie Rossi Barba Hadjiconstantinou.

Raymond lived a life centered on family, joy, and meaningful connection. With his confidence, humor, and unmistakable presence, he could light up any room he entered. Often described as the life of the party, Raymond had an effortless way of making others feel welcome, entertained, and truly valued.

A proud patriot, Raymond served his country as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. His love for America remained strong throughout his life, reflected in his values, his NRA membership, and his unwavering support of the Second Amendment. Discipline and strength shaped his early years, including a passion for boxing, which laid the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of sports. That love held strong as he cheered on the New York Yankees and New York Giants.

Raymond found peace and joy in nature and simple pleasures. He loved sitting in the bed of his truck by the beach, sipping a cold beer, listening to country music, and taking in the world around him. At home, he found equal contentment watching the birds gather at his feeder, appreciating the quiet moments just as much as the lively ones.

Above all else, Raymond was devoted to his family. He shared a remarkable love story with his wife, his Dolly. Married for 11 years and together for 28, their bond was one of deep love, loyalty, and friendship. Raymond was a phenomenal husband and a devoted father who never missed one of his son’s baseball games. He showed his love through his presence-always there, always engaged, always making family the priority.

Family gatherings, no matter how small, became events in Raymond’s hands. He loved to cook, especially Italian food, and took great pride in feeding those he loved. His table was always full, his kitchen always like a restaurant, and his family always at the center of it all.

Raymond will be remembered for his strength, his humor, his patriotism, and most importantly, his unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the memories he created, the meals he prepared, and the love he gave so freely.

Along with his wife of 11 years, Lisa, Raymond is survived by his children, Raymond Joseph (Michael Chillemi) Barba, Ryan (Gina) Barba, and his bonus son, Patrick (Cassidy) Boyle; his granddaughter, Amalia; his siblings, Joseph (Petra) Barba, and Leanne Robinson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, January 16, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with military honors and a prayer service at 7:15 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veteran’s.

Barbara Gaunya Bourdeau

Barbara Gaunya Bourdeau, formerly of Milford and Orange, died January 15, 2026, after a long and impactful life full of love and laughter. She was the beloved mother of three sons, Richard Michael (Michele) of Woodbridge, James Randell (Bonnie Donato) of Cheshire, and Robert Stanford of Branford. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren –Kierstyn, Gabrielle, Patrick, Daniel, and Madeline – as well as her brother Steven Gaunya of Hopkinton MA; sister-in-law Regina O’Connell of Venice FL, brother-in-law Rodney Bourdeau of Danbury, sister-in-law Renee Bourdeau of Old Saybrook, her Fraizer cousins, former daughters-in-law Jane Bourdeau and Sarah Bourdeau, and numerous nieces and nephews she loved as her own. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years Richard Meda Bourdeau, her parents Theodore and Lillian Gaunya, favorite aunt and uncle Hazel and John Scanlon, in-laws Roland and Rita Bourdeau, sister-in-law Wilma Bourdeau, brother-in-law Arthur O’Connell, and sister-in-law Denise Gaunya.

Born in New Haven on July 10, 1937, Barbara moved up and down the eastern seaboard with her parents and younger brother during World War II until they settled in Milford in 1946 – a community that became near and dear to her beach-loving heart. Except for a 22-year exile in Orange, she lived in Milford for almost the rest of her life. She always considered Milford her home.

Barbara was a proud graduate of Milford High School (1955) and the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene in Boston (1957). She worked as a clinical dental hygienist for over 50 years, including 10 years as Regional Dental Coordinator for the CT Department of Special Services. She was a President of both the New Haven and Connecticut Dental Hygienist Associations. She inspired two of her nieces to enter the profession. Dental hygiene was her lifelong professional passion.

Concurrently, Barbara brought her health care administrative skills to Chamberlain Ambulance Service in Milford. A co-owner with her husband, she became President in 1989. She modernized and streamlined operations. She championed professional growth for her employees. She expanded services offered to the community. Barbara and Richard were honored for their work in 1991 when they received the Milford Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. They sold the company to American Medical Response in 1995. After that, Barbara and Richard formed Senior Care, an insurance agency dedicated to assisting clients by providing long-term health care needs. Barbara did this until Richard’s passing.

Throughout her adult life, Barbara was active in civic affairs and several local service organizations. She was a President of Milford Cooperative Nursery School, Drug Free Milford, and a long-time community volunteer who served on many boards of directors including Milford United Way, MILE, Milford Fine Arts Council, River Park Housing, and the Milford High School All-Class Reunion Committee.

Many of her professional and volunteer accomplishments came in male-dominated fields. She was driven to show what a woman could do if she put her mind to it. Many of her successes were due partly to talent and partly to the grit she needed to overcome obstacles in her way. When she set her mind to do something, she was a force of nature.

Barbara was also a huge sports fan, especially women’s sports. A tomboy at heart, she played basketball and softball long before it was considered “lady-like.” She was an ardent fan of the New York Yankees and a rabid fan of UConn basketball, especially “her girls.” She was a champion of women’s athletics in general and was moved to tears attending her first UConn women’s basketball game, reveling in how popular it had become.

Through it all, Barbara’s primary focus was her family. Her selfless devotion to her children and grandchildren was quite apparent, through numerous carpool rides, field trips, family gatherings, and attendance at too many sporting events and dance recitals to count. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

The family would also like to thank the many medical and care professionals who assisted Barbara these past few years. They include the staffs of Coachman Square in Woodbridge, Maplewood of Orange, and the administration and aides at Visiting Angels of Woodbridge – especially Monique and Pauline, who she regarded as good friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Agnes Church, 400 Merwin Avenue, Milford (MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH). Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association in the name of Barbara Gaunya Bourdeau – www.alz.org.

John Lang Button Jr.

John Lang Button Jr., known to family and friends as Jack, died on January 22 in Milford, Connecticut. He was born on April 7, 1932, in Ithaca, New York, where his lifelong connection to sailing began.

Jack learned to sail as a child on Cayuga Lake, and the water remained central to his life for decades. Sailing was more than a pastime for him; it was a discipline and a community. From his early years in Ithaca, he spent much of his adult life racing one-design sailboats, devoting himself particularly to the Star Class, one of the most technically demanding classes in competitive sailing.

Over the course of his sailing career, Jack competed in Star Fleet regattas, district championships, national and international events, and Star Class World Championship regattas. His accomplishments included wins at the Nutmeg Regatta, Arms White, and the Bedford Pitcher Trophy, often racing with longtime partner Chris Batchelor. He was widely respected as a steady, disciplined sailor known for smooth tactics, careful preparation, and sailing fast and smart. He also served the sailing community in leadership roles, including as Commodore of the Milford Yacht Club from 1984 to 1985, and in other officer and service roles within the club and the Star Fleet.

Though sailing was central to his identity, Jack’s life was anchored by his work and his hands. Professionally, he was a mechanic, mechanical engineer, and operations executive. He spent a significant portion of his career at UE Precision Sensors in Milford, Connecticut, where he served as a Vice President. He was known for his deep practical knowledge, his insistence on precision, and his ability to understand how systems worked from the inside out.

That same precision defined Jack as a craftsman. With support from family, friends, and, most notably, his wife Lois, Jack fully gutted and restored their 1909 home in Milford, rebuilding it with careful engineering, structural integrity, and meticulous attention to detail. He built other homes and completed numerous renovation projects over the years, always favoring durability and thoughtful design over shortcuts. His craftsmanship was exacting and purposeful, reflecting a belief that things should be built to last.

Jack’s sense of community found expression in quiet, tangible ways. In Milford, he designed, built, installed, and maintained several Little Free Libraries, positioning them thoughtfully and caring for them over many years. These small structures reflected his values: usefulness, craftsmanship, and service without fanfare.

Jack remained an enthusiastic downhill skier into his seventies. He even built a rope tow in the backyard to teach his children to ski, a project that reflected his ingenuity. Ski trips took him to Canada and Austria with his many friends. He and Lois also enjoyed traveling more broadly throughout Europe. Later in life, Jack took up golf, approaching it with the same curiosity and discipline he brought to sailing. He especially enjoyed playing with his son, John, and with his daughter, Cathy, and stepson Jay, and the time spent together mattered as much as the game itself. He was also an avid follower of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team, eagerly tracking the team’s progress and sharing that enthusiasm with John. He was funny and kind, with an easy charm that people were drawn to. Even when Jack was winning the pot at poker or dominating in many of the other card games he enjoyed, he had a way of making people laugh and feel at ease.

Jack loved to read and maintained a daily practice of completing a Sudoku puzzle, a ritual he kept for years. It suited him. Quiet focus, problem-solving, and consistency were pleasures rather than chores. Jack was born into a family with deep roots in Ithaca, connected to the historic JB Lang and Lang & Button manufacturing enterprise. That heritage of mechanical ingenuity and practical skill shaped him early and remained evident throughout his life. His family history and those early Ithaca years were later captured in a StoryCorps interview recorded by his daughter, Susan, preserving his voice and stories for future generations.

Jack is lovingly remembered by his partner and wife of 42 years, Lois Barr. He will be deeply missed by his children from his marriage to Patricia Doohan: Catherine Button, John Lang Button III, and Susan Kane (Timothy Gotsick); by his grandchildren Emma Kane, Dana Curran (Kevin Curran), Jessica Button, and Jennifer Bunnell (David Bunnell); and by his great-grandchildren Joseph Ignacio, Cash Curran, Oliver Curran, Daniela McGravy, and Brady Newquist.

He is also survived by his stepchildren Jay Webster (Patty Webster) and Susan Laden, as well as step-grandchildren Laura Webster, CJ Laden, and Bethany Laden.

Those who knew Jack knew him as a man who valued competence, preparation, and quiet generosity. Whether on the water, in a workshop, or in his community, he believed in doing things carefully and doing them right. Like a good sailor, he paid attention to conditions, trusted his experience, and understood that progress came from patience as much as skill.

His life followed a steady course, shaped by wind, work, and the satisfaction of building something that would endure.

Information about this summer’s celebration of Jack’s life will be forthcoming

Marcia Elizabeth Cobain

Marcia Elizabeth Cobain (née Cole), a beloved longtime resident of Milford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, at the age of 80. She left this world surrounded by the unwavering love of her three devoted sons, Jeff, Mike, and Chris, who were by her side until the very end.

Born on July 23, 1945, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to the late Bernard H. Cole and Grace Olive Vigeant King, Marcia grew into a woman whose heart was as vast as her capacity for care. For decades, she poured that heart into her calling as a registered nurse, touching countless lives with her compassion, skill, and quiet strength before retiring. But it was in her role as a mother, grandmother, wife, and friend that her light shone brightest. Marcia’s greatest joy came from the simple, beautiful moments: watching her grandchildren grow, laughing together on beach outings, exploring new places through travel, and sharing quiet, golden years with her cherished friend Don Crowell of Tucson. She built a life rich in lifelong friendships and deep bonds with former colleagues who became family. Her warmth, her humor, and her unwavering kindness left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband E. William “Bill” Cobain, who passed suddenly in 1997. The profound love they shared became the foundation of the family she nurtured so tenderly. Marcia is survived by her three sons: Jeffrey T. Cobain and his wife Rebecca of Reno, Nevada; Michael W. Cobain of Milford, Connecticut; and Christopher J. Cobain of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She was the proud and adoring grandmother of six wonderful grandchildren—Christopher, Taylor, Paige, Travis, Jimmy, and Jack—who were the absolute delight of her life and the living legacy of her boundless love. Though her presence will be deeply missed, the love she gave so freely will live on in every hug, every shared memory, and every act of kindness her family and friends carry forward.

Marcia’s spirit—resilient, loving, and full of grace—remains with us always. Services will be held at a later date, as arranged by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to a charity close to your heart in Marcia’s memory, honoring the way she lived: with generosity and care for others.

Mike was a devoted family man and lived a life filled with purpose, skill, and heart. A proud member of the Shriners and the Free Masons, he brought the same dedication to his craft as a talented chef, graduating from the Culinary Institute of America and spending more than 20 years in the restaurant world, including as head chef at the Red Barn in Westport and over a decade in Florida running their family-owned restaurant, Wyldewood. Even after leaving the restaurant industry, Mike never stopped being a chef. He proudly continued his craft at home, where he and Beth Ann hosted countless holidays and family gatherings, filling their house with incredible food, laughter, and love. Raised in Orange, Mike’s talents reached far beyond the kitchen: he was a lifelong gifted musician who played the bagpipes, saxophone, harmonica, and keyboard, even mastering the keyboard by ear without sheet music. He loved vacationing with his family in the Caribbean, proudly cheered for the Patriots, enjoyed shooting, and never missed the annual St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl with his fellow Shriners. Known for his legendary sweet tooth, Mike could easily out-eat the Cookie Monster himself when it came to cookies and desserts. Ever the busybody and fixer, Michael was happiest lending a hand and making things work. Seldom did he need to hire a plumber, electrician, or mechanic. Mike ultimately changed careers to spend more time with those he loved and went on to work for 15 years at Madison Polymeric Engineering so he could be present for his daughters and family, who were always the center of his world.

To her final days she watched Mass on TV and said her rosary daily.

For many years, Kathleen served as a member of the Resurrection Choir at St. Gabriel Church as well as the St. Gabriel knitter’s group.
