Joseph A. Arpino

Joseph A. Arpino, 84 of Milford, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025. Joseph, “Joe”, was born on August 19, 1940, in New Haven, CT, son of the late Pasquale and Caroline Arpino. Joe was the beloved husband of Carol Benjamin Arpino for nearly 60 years.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 following the Korean war in which he was stationed in Korea to help with the construction and rebuilding of the country following the war. Joe’s service left a lasting legacy, inspiring his grandson Dylan, who joined the Marines and often spoke of his grandfather as his hero, wanting to follow in his footprints.

After his military service, Joe returned home and took over the family business, Arpino Asphalt & Paving, alongside his brother Carmen. Together, they transformed an already successful company into a cornerstone of the community, known for their integrity and exceptional service. Joe worked tirelessly until the age of 84, embodying dedication and pride in his work, with his son carrying on the business into the third generation.

Joe and his beloved wife, Carol, shared many adventures during their marriage, traveling to all 50 states and the Caribbean islands. They especially enjoyed escaping the cold winters to sunny Florida. Among Joe’s favorite traditions were the Thanksgiving week trips to his hunting cabin in Maine, where he spent time with family, friends, and employees. He also found joy in golfing, maintaining his immaculate lawn, and helping his daughter with home improvement projects.

Lovingly known as “PopPop,” Joe was a central figure in the lives of his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, who cherished his guidance and love.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Joe’s primary care physician, Dr. Kashaf, and the V.A. Cancer Center of Connecticut, whose skilled and compassionate care extended his life far beyond initial expectations. They are also deeply thankful for his hospice nurse, Ann, who provided comfort and care during his final days.

In addition to his beloved wife, Carol, Joe is survived by his daughter Denise Arpino (fiancée Scott Ashley), son Joseph P. Arpino, granddaughter Angelica Arpino (fiancée Bradley McCormick), grandson Dylan Arpino, and sister Phyllis Arpino. As well as his best friend of over 70 years, Edward White, and many beloved extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Carmen Arpino.

Joe will be remembered for his tenderhearted personality and devotion to everyone in his life.

Known for his competitive spirit and sportsmanship, he forged lasting friendships with teammates and opponents. In recognition of his skill and dedication, Rich was honored with a place in the Connecticut ASA Slow Pitch Hall of Fame in 1996.

‘Coach Rich’ volunteered for many of his sons’ baseball teams in Milford Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion. At the time, contributing to players’ development and team success was his satisfaction. In later years being remembered by those players was priceless.

As a grandfather his greatest joy was spending time with family. He rarely missed a game or event his grandchildren participated in. Never short to critique performance, he was always proud of their effort.

A loyal Catholic, Rich attended church services every Sunday and Holy Day. We find comfort in knowing he is reunited with dear family members gone before him.

In addition to his devoted wife Bonnie, Richard is survived by his children, David (Jill) Lanese, Richard (Cindy) Lanese, Karen (Joe) Ferraro, and Dawn (Steve) Warzel; cherished grandchildren, Justin, Kevin, Tori, Kasen, Nick, Shannen, Shayla, Michael, and Miranda; beloved great grandchildren, Angelo and Harper; and many extended family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, January 30, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the Redeemer Church, 325 Oronoque Road, Milford (Meet directly at church). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beth-El Center, 90 New Haven Ave, Milford, CT 06460 or a charity of one’s choice.

Reinhold Luther

We are sad to announce that Reinhold Luther, 98, of Milford passed away on January 29, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born on April 8, 1926 in Kalvaria, Lithuania. He was the beloved husband of the late Herta (Hammler) Luther, and the son of the late Charles and Helen (Keslau) Luther.

Reinhold (Reiny) lived a remarkable life. Reiny’s childhood and early adulthood were shaped by WWII. When Russia invaded Lithuania in 1940 the family moved to Plock in East Germany as refugees. Reiny always excelled at school, skipping two grades at one point. Reiny went off to attend the Munich Architecture Academy at the age of 16 and graduated in early 1940 with a degree in Land Surveying. He was then drafted into the Luftwaffe and trained as a pilot. At the war’s end his unit was captured by the Americans in Italy before seeing any action. Reiny was interred at a prison camp in Forgia, Italy. In the prison camp, American management recognized Reiny’s talents and put him in charge of surveying a massive airport in Forgia. Reiny had 10 survey crews working for him. Upon discharge he was presented with a commendation and letter of recommendation from the Colonel in charge of the camp.

Reiny then made his way to his family who were now in Hamburg. His grandparents were both in a nursing home. One of the nurses at the home was his bride to be Herta. They fell in love, got married and were accepted as displaced persons into the United States, settling in New Britain.

Reiny found work at the Electric Utility, Connecticut Light and Power as a land surveyor. With 4 young children and a full time job he attended the University of Hartford and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1968. When Reiny retired twenty years later he was the Chairman of the Insulated Conductors Committee of IEEE. He always stayed involved in Land Surveying, running his own part time business as a licensed Land Surveyor. With all this on his plate he still lavished attention on his children, grandchildren and many friends and extended family.

Reiny was an avid fisherman, both fresh and salt water. He was a passionate collector of mushrooms. Reiny and Herta were world travelers, particularly enjoying cruises. For many years, they wintered in Desert Hot Springs, CA enjoying the benefits of the mineral water.

Reiny is pre-deceased by his beloved wife Herta and beloved daughter Judy (Joe) Andrews. He is survived by his daughter Edith (Oscar Bran) Luther, son Ed (Teruko) Luther and son Bob (Liz) Luther. He leaves grandchildren Vicki (Bill) Bran Tone, Mary (Greg Wilson) Luther, Rose Luther, Michael Luther, Bob (Iris) Bran and Russell (Anna) Bran. Great Grand Children are Sam Wilson, Hannah Wilson, Myles Bran Tone and Liam Bran Tone. He will be sorely missed by his best friend Cliff Mason and his devoted caregiver Zofia Kwaskiewicz.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Naomi Rottman

Naomi Simkhovitch Rottman, 88, passed peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, February 1, 2025, following several years enduring the cruel decline brought on by dementia where, rather than living life, she was just existing.

Naomi was the wife of the late Honorable Alvin G. Rottman (1925-1997) and is survived by her daughter Patricia (Patti) Antonelli and son-in-law John Antonelli of West Haven. She was predeceased by two sisters.

Naomi was born on August 11, 1936, in Greenwich, CT to the Russian/Ukraine/American artist Simka Simkhovitch (d 1949) and Elsa Fornell Simkhovitch (d 1970). The family moved to Milford, CT in the mid-1940s and Naomi graduated from Milford High School in 1954.

Naomi and Al met when she started working at his private law practice. They married on April 15, 1956, which is when she moved to the Woodmont section of Milford where Al resided. Naomi was a 65-year resident of Woodmont until it was necessary for her to be moved to assisted living.

In the early 1960s Naomi worked for Drs. Leonard Rappaport and Nicholas Coassin at Milford Surgical Associates doing administrative duties to keep the business side of their medical practice in order and running smoothly. After a few years she changed her profession to keeping her home in order and running smoothly. One of her main responsibilities was going to the library almost every week to get and return several books at a time for Al, who was a voracious reader.

One of Naomi’s greatest personal achievements in life was quitting smoking in 1973, which she did through a program called SmokEnders. After successfully completing the program, she worked for SmokEnders for several years as a program moderator, and took tremendous pride in helping many others “kick the habit.”

Later in life Naomi discovered the joy of swimming and for years spent hours in Long Island Sound swimming back and forth from in front of her house and towards the West Haven shore. This led to another one of her greatest personal achievements: Winning the Masters’ Class in the 25th annual 1.5-mile Cross Milford Harbor Swim event on July 26, 1980.

Naomi was a proud daughter of Simka Simkovich, who was an accomplished artist in the early 1900s through his premature death in 1949, and she took immense pride in trying to preserve and promote her father’s legacy and extensive body of work.

Naomi’s greatest joy in life was peaceful solitude and the wonderful view of Long Island Sound and the coast of West Haven from her waterfront home on Beach Avenue, where she resided since 1969 and had hoped to remain for life. Naomi lost her eyesight at the beginning of 2020 and, with 24/7 home care, she was able to remain in her waterfront home in Woodmont until the fall of 2021 when she was moved into assisted living.

Besides her house in Milford, the one other place she loved was Cape Cod. When a child, summer family vacations were spent in Hyannisport. After she and Al married they vacationed every year in Provincetown, spending time with many artists and business owners who lived there year-round and became life-time friends. Naomi maintained many of these friendships after Al passed.

Naomi preferred the company of adults and could be a very gracious hostess or guest. She had a good sense of humor, loved a good laugh and perusing the aisles at Trader Joe’s, and many days her highlight was going out for dinner. She always tried to keep up on the news and preferred entertainment that was cultural or educational, though The Sopranos was one of her all-time favorite shows, right up there with Masterpiece Theatre. As much as she loved a fun time, Naomi was also very set in her ways and never afraid to speak her mind or offer her opinion.

Naomi’s daughter wants to extend very special thanks and gratitude to those who provided much-needed help and compassionate care for Naomi in her final years: Deborah McKeever, for coordinating Naomi’s life and care for the last few years she was at home; Donna Bradley, who provided help with Debbie McKeever; home aide Aisha Mustafah, who had the patience of a saint; the staff at Carriage Green of Milford; the staff in the memory care area at Charter Senior Living of Orange since May 2023, particularly the staff during the last six months (there are far too many to name individually in this space, but special thanks to nurse Cheryl Kinman who was there when Naomi arrived and always checked in on her); hospice nurse Donna McCarthy and aide Christine Steeves from Constellation Healthcare who provided the extra exceptional care and attention that was needed for an extended period of time leading up to and during the final stages to the end; and to Tina Knapp, a former aide, for her continued caring visits and gifts of homemade cookies or other treats that were Naomi’s favorites.

There will be no calling hours or services. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Naomi’s memory to the charity of choice, or plant a tree.

Please share a memory or leave a message of condolence online.
