Gloria Duran

Gloria Duran, accomplished writer, painter and educator, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 1, 2024.  She was at home in Orange where she had lived and produced many works of fiction and marvelous paintings since 1961. Gloria was born of Russian immigrant parents in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1924. As a young girl she took art lessons at the Worcester Art Museum and sparked a life long interest in landscape and seascape painting. She went from high school in Worcester to Wellesley College during the Second World War and graduated in 1945 with a degree in Political Science. She was a lifelong booster of Wellesley and participated in many alumni sponsored events.  She earned post graduate degrees in International Relations and Russian Studies from  Columbia University and in Spanish Literature from Yale University. During the late 1940s and early 1950s she worked as a travel guide writer for Esso Road News and then as a political affairs intelligence analyst for  the US Department of State. Her job was to translate and analyze information coming from State Department sources in Afghanistan and the Arabian Peninsula.  One interesting request that came to her desk was from a minor sheik who was jealous of his neighboring sheik and wanted a small atomic device to eliminate the neighbor, who he claimed was a communist and a troublemaker! Gloria was among the first State Department analysts to predict the Soviet Union’s intent to invade Afghanistan. Her prediction was not acted on by her superiors but it actually occurred about 25 years after she had predicted.

Among her many and varied jobs was the translation from Russian to English for national delegations engaged in United Nations sponsored conferences in Europe, Mexico and South America.   She met and married a refugee from the Spanish Civil war ( Manuel Duran) who also was working as an interpreter at the UN sponsored conferences.   They married in 1949 and lived for a few years in Paris and then moved to Princeton, New Jersey, where Manuel was working on his doctorate.

Manolo and Gloria then moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, where their two children Alex and Philip were born. Gloria participated in Spanish dramatic productions at Smith College and also professionally recorded readings of Spanish classical age plays together with Manuel.  The family moved to Orange, Connecticut, in 1960. Besides bringing up her children there, she completed her master’s degree in Spanish literature at Yale University and also taught Spanish both at the Yale summer language institute and later at the University of Connecticut in Waterbury. Her many widely acclaimed literary works include studies of contemporary Mexican novelists, collections of poems, Spanish language learning texts and historical fiction for younger readers, focused on the age of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Her husband Manuel passed away in the year 2000 and Gloria’s last years were spent pursuing her lifelong interests in writing and painting at her home in Orange, surrounded by close family and enjoying the company of her many friends in the area. Gloria and her family want to thank her loving and skillful CNA Caregivers, Lovanda Brown, Joan Brown, Patty Appold , Karen Santana, and Genilma Lopes. Rarely have we seen so much skill, knowledge and intelligence demonstrated. They cared for Gloria with so much joy and vitality it helped make her life more interesting and happy despite the difficulties of the aging process. Memorial services are being planned and for more details, contact Joanne Duran at joannedesigns@icloud.com.

Sandra Elizabeth Librandi

Sandra “Sandy” Elizabeth Librandi, 63, of Milford, beloved wife of Christopher Librandi, passed away on June 28, 2024. Born on March 17, 1961 in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late John and Sally Burns.

Along with her husband, Christopher, Sandy leaves behind her cherished daughters, Danielle (husband Michael), Paige, and Alexandra; adoring grandchildren Frank, Cameron, and Rory; brother Thomas (wife Laurie), siblings-in-law, Nicole (husband Bill) and Geraldine (husband Douglas); and many, many friends. Sandy will also be greatly missed by her beloved cat, Kona and dog, Oakley.

Sandy lived an interesting and busy life. Her early years were in Fairfield before a short stay in Monroe, then California, Pennsylvania, and then back to Fairfield. Sandy graduated from Andrew Warde High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University before beginning work at the New Haven Region Center (NHRC)/State Department of Developmental Services (DDS).  Sandy served in many different roles, until she ultimately settled in as a Behavior Modification Specialist on the Community Support Team. Sandy worked for DDS for 25+ years, retiring in 2018. Sandy met the love of her life, Chris, at the NHRC. Between dating and marriage, they were together almost 40 years. They traveled as much as they could. They traveled to Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas, Key West, Italy, and several other destinations. Before marriage, Sandy traveled to every state in the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii. Sandy was an avid outdoors person, loved nothing more that to be out hiking and walking as long and as far as she could. In her youth, she spent a month in the Colorado Mountains with the Outward-Bound program.

For those who knew Sandy, they knew her as a force of nature—someone not to be trifled with or slighted. Sandy was a woman who had no backdown or backup in her demeanor.

She was your best friend and strongest supporter if you were lucky enough to be her friend. Sandy always fought hardest when she thought someone wasn’t being treated right or was being taken advantage of. She was a defender of the underdog and loved nothing more than to make others happy and welcomed in her home. She was always doing something for someone and her favorite activity was finding that special something for that person. If you ask her though, her proudest achievements were her children. Sandy wanted nothing more to see Danielle, Paige and Alexandra—who were the loves of her life—grown, proud, independent women. Her only regret is that she didn’t have enough time with the new loves of her life-her  grandchildren.

Sandy’s passing will leave a huge void in our lives. The house will be far more quiet and empty without the sound of her incessant cleaning. At least Oakley will bark less at the sound of a running vacuum. The question of “where’s mom/your mother” will no longer need an answer: She’s not here. Her physical presence is gone but her amazing spirit will always be with us.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Smilow Cancer Hospital or the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

David H. McKeand

Dave launched into entrepreneurship at a young age. Using a printing press in the family garage, he published neighborhood newspapers The Weekly News Corner and The Royal Monthly while attending Mamaroneck High School (grad. 1956).

He attended New York University and graduated from its School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance in 1960. From his early days, Dave was influenced by his uncle, George McKeand, who introduced him to the business world. Ambitiously, Dave purchased Church Press in West Haven, CT in 1959, before graduating from NYU. He published Larchmont News between 1961 and 1966 while building the business at Church Press. Dave formed McKeand Publications in 1969, publishing World Coffee & Tea and Petroleum Marketer, two leading trade magazines. He had a distinct passion for his businesses, visibly evident for years in his building on the corner of First Avenue and Richards Street in West Haven. He retired in 1991.

Dave’s other passion was music. Specifically, he loved the organ. John E. Moore Jr.

John Edward Moore Jr., perhaps the funniest man in Milford or maybe even CT, suddenly and sadly left us all on July 12, 2024.   He was known for his wit, contagious smile and warm personality. All who knew him, loved him.

He was born at St. Raphael’s hospital in New Haven, CT., on December 19, 1955 to John and Anne Rigby Moore. Always  thoughtful and sensitive – even as a child,  John made sure his arrival was early, being sure to be born in advance of Christmas so his mother could be home with his 3 older sisters.

Growing up in North Branford, CT, John worked from the time he was 11 years old, being called “the shrewd yet very smart one” by his 4 siblings for his talent of doubling his money effortlessly. First, he had a newspaper route and then hired a group of kids to work for him doing it. He also collected golf balls at the driving range and used the money he made to buy an MG sports car, fixed it up and sold it for a much higher amount. He was 13.   No surprise – he was great salesman.

In 1975, he married Sandra Troiano and had 2 sons whom he was extremely proud of. He was especially impressed of the men they have grown up to be. Both sons have their own successful companies which they started. Jimmy is married to Monica Ayres, (Hurley, NY),  and they have 2 daughters, Nora and Sofie who brought John a great amount of joy. Mike and his wife, Danielle live in Brooklyn, NY.

Throughout life, John possessed a wicked wit and amazing sense of humor,(which he claims he learned from his father) making people laugh till they cried on a regular basis. It never mattered to him whether his audience were school kids or seniors as long as they were listening. He was even known to crack jokes in sign language, never leaving anyone out.

As a kid, he loved riding dirt bikes an motorcycles. He even rode across the country with a friend in his 20’s. While living in Newfane, VT, John was a school bus driver and then a successful manager at C&S Wholesale Food Distributors for 20 years.   He had incredible aim, as a pro dart player and avid golfer.

At 46 years old John moved back to CT and met his soon to be soulmate Deb Hadden, after finding her available on Match.com.  Pami, Debbie’s younger sister went on the first date when they met at Oyster River.  That night poor John was positioned between the two of them at the bar and they grilled him with questions.  Two years later they married on September 3, 2004 and spent the next 20 years living on the beach in Milford, Ct.

Deb always describes John as her Knight in Shining Armor, and affectionately referred to him as Studly. Not just because he was cute and handsome but also because his name this way rhymed with Dudly … Dudley Moore.  Together Debbie and John traveled, laughed, cried while doing everything together.   Deb’s entire family loved John Moore, but Deb knew john might have trouble winning over her father.  David Hadden always said anyone with facial hair was hiding something.  So, Debbie and Pami shaved off John’s facial hair and then naturally he didn’t resist John’s charm and cooking.

When Deb’s mom, Patsy,  moved into their Villa West building on the beach, John helped care for her. He absolutely adored her and cooked for her every night. Being needed by her was one of the great joys of his life.

John was predeceased by his parents and his sister Suzi Moore Baldwin of Guilford, Ct.  His sister Cathy Palasciano and brother-in-law John live in Shelburne, Vt.,  and Robin Rollinger and her husband David live in Cape Coral, Fl.  His younger brother Jeff is married to Lori and they live in Brattleboro, VT. He has numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews that he wished he lived closer to, but always thought of them.

Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial service and luncheon which will take place at Noon on Tuesday July 23rd.  Stonebridge Restaurant, 50 Daniel Street Milford, CT.

George Newell

George Newell, a pillar of love and devotion, has peacefully departed, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories. As a doting father to Michael, Jeffrey, Stacey and Sloane, a proud Grandfather to Nicholas, Sebastian and Rune and a loving Great-Grandfather to Wyatt, Brady and Willow, George’s presence illuminated the lives of those around him.

Alongside his adoring wife Beverly of 66+ years, George’s love story was a testament to enduring commitment and unwavering loyalty. They shared a passion for dancing, their graceful movements a reflection of their deep bond and mutual affection. In addition, George was a loving brother to Susan Ortoleva and an uncle to countless nieces and nephews. His caring nature extended beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of many with his kindness and generosity.

A fervent sports enthusiast, George’s heart belonged to the Yankees, Celtics, Giants, and UConn. Yet his true passion lay in his devotion to family. Always putting family first, George’s unwavering support and boundless love were a source of strength and inspiration to all who knew him. He was also an avid sportsman and he looked forward to annual hunting trips to PA, taking each of the boys when they were of age. He never had a bad day of either salt or fresh water fishing. His zest for participating in life never faded. He loved banana splits, hot dogs, scotch, a good hug and a good laugh. George was an adventurous man who never said no to a good time or to a new experience unless it included al dente veggies. George’s “derring-do” had no expiration date. In his late 80s he completed his first sky-dive, jumping an incredible 18,000 feet. During the free fall his ears flopped back and forth, and his mustache stood at attention, and he loved it!

He was not complicated; he loved his wife, his family and his country and just about everything in between. A true gentleman with a heart of gold, he was loyal and strong, tough as nails and yet kind and gentle. One would never hear him complain; he was stoic and patient.

The family would like to thank the VA Hospitals in West Haven, CT and Orlando, FL and also Four Corners Hospice for the quality of life that George enjoyed until his last breath. Upon his frequent VA discharges he never failed to say, “Thank you, I am always better when I leave than I was when I arrived”. Their seamless excellence in care granted him his last wish: the ability to actively participate in a quality of life that dialysis would have denied him. George always referred to Dr. Rachel Laff and Kathleen Wojcek, R.N. as his guardian angels. We are indebted to George Tellides, MD, PhD who listened to George, as he was a high risk patient. George was given eight more quality years in which he danced at a grandsons wedding, held great-grandchildren and celebrated his 66th wedding anniversary in July of 2023. In addition to the support from Connecticut family and friends, I would also like to pay recognition to our special Polo Park East (PPE) family who traveled the last mile of his life journey with him.

As we bid farewell to George, let us carry his legacy of love, kindness and dedication to family. Though he no longer walks with us, his spirit will forever dance in our hearts, a timeless reminder of the enduring power of love. George’s memory will continue to illuminate our lives with the warmth of his everlasting love. To Honor George, his family asks that you perform random acts of kindness to honor his legacy.

A private service with military honors will be held at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, CT.

James Edward Smalley

James Edward Smalley, 59, passed away on June 14, 2024. Born on July 13, 1964 in Milford, he was the son of the late Edward Clarence Smalley and Joyce Elaine (Pooley) Woike.

Growing up in Connecticut included trips to summer camp, fishing and bike riding in the neighborhood, weekends at the race track, digging for antique bottles in the stream out back, and sleepover weekends at his grandparents’ house in Milford. There the family enjoyed annual picnics and amazing Fourth of July fireworks displays over the river.

Jim moved to the west coast after school. As a young man, he spent many years in the moving industry, traveling the country and making life-long friendships along the way. Jim settled in northern California, his favorite place on earth, where he met his wife, Cheryl, a California native, and raised their son, Joshua.

If you knew Jim, then you know he loved everything in a big, big way. He enjoyed cooking (and eating!), drinking the perfect mocha (with a triple shot of espresso, preferably), going bird hunting, fishing, camping, telling a great story and, most of all, making people laugh. Did he tell you the one about losing his car keys while fishing, trekking back and forth in the woods searching in vain, only to find them in his fishing waders after giving up?

Jim cherished his pets and had many in his home over the years, including his beautiful wolf and dogs, a collection of exotic birds and a crew of cats (both sweet and ornery!). Also holding special significance to Jim were the collection of vintage furniture pieces that he and Cheryl acquired over the years. He loved garage sales, thrifting, driving his truck and gardening. Let’s not forget he had a green thumb!

Also special to Jim were his friends. Working in the moving industry brought Jim many places and the friendships he developed lasted throughout his lifetime. You wonderful folks who were loved by Jim know who you are. He often said he would give the shirt off his back for any one of you.

Jim proudly accomplished his two dreams in life: owning a house and buying a tractor trailer truck. He also secured a contract with a national moving company. But Jim’s greatest pride in life was his son, Joshua. Josh was born earlier than expected, arriving while Jim was on the road. He shed tears when he first saw his son and, years later, Jim proudly cried again when Josh announced he was entering law school. Jim often boasted about Josh’s achievements, from the young boy who took summer classes and excelled at karate to the young man who became an attorney.

Jim was graced in life with a patient wife who was also his best friend, a son who made him proud, and a slew of steadfast friends and family who supported him. Jim also had the fortune to connect with half-siblings later in life, discovering a brother and sister that enriched his life.

Jimmy will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by: his son, Joshua James Smalley, daughter-in-law, Leah, and grandchildren, Jacob and Sydnie, each of whom held a special place in his heart; his mother, Joyce Elaine Woike, and step-father, George H. Woike, Jr.; his uncle Richard Pooley and his wife, Annie; his uncle Robert Pooley and his wife, Carol; his aunt, Robin Richards, and her husband, William; his sister Lisa Hokansson, her husband, Adam, and niece and nephews Nicole, Samuel and Benjamin; his brother, Douglas Smalley; and his sister, Brianna Smalley, and niece and nephew, Mia and Jaxon.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, June 28, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. To leave online condolences, please visit our website at www.codywhitefuneralservice.com.
