Astle, Thomas W.
Thomas W. Astle passed away peacefully at age 90 on January 30, 2021 at Branford Hospice.
Tom was born in Emporia, Kansas to W.P. “Buck” Astle and Rhea Astle. Rhea was a fifth grade school teacher and a prolific artist. Buck was a high school history teacher, high school and college football coach as well as a Big Ten Football referee and top official in the 1961 Orange Bowl and several Cotton Bowls.
Tom served as his class President and was Valedictorian at Peabody High School, Peabody, KS, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He continued athletics in college on the swimming and diving teams and received a BS in Engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a member of the ATO fraternity, ROTC, and Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. It was at Carnegie Tech where he met his future wife Joan Robison who was an architecture student in the first year they admitted women to that program. They married the summer after graduation in 1952 and Tom went into active duty in the Korean War the next day. Tom was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and received marksmanship awards, a Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
Tom and Joan lived in Cleveland, OH, in Buffalo and Fairport, NY while Tom worked for Reliance Electric Co. and became a Mason, and settled in Orange, CT in a home Joan designed and they had custom built in 1964. Tom’s creative engineering and carpentry skills allowed him to complete the interior of their new home and build all of their furniture including a unique dining room table with hot plates embedded in each setting, a motorized couch, a fish tank coffee table, a 12′ x 14′ slot car race track for the kids, and snooker table where Tom routinely schooled his guests. The basement is home to Tom’s elaborate workshop with his two story model railroad train track, two custom designed 6 ft wingspan control line planes and three kilns where every summer fired glass artwork was created. His building skills continued as he designed and built a custom camper that took his family on many trips to visit relatives, explore the west, and tailgate at Yale football games.
In 1967 Tom started his business (Astec initially, then changed to Tomtec in 1971) working with clients to solve their laboratory automation diagnostics and liquid handling needs. The first instruments were an essential element of Smith Kline’s rubella vaccine program. The company eventually grew out of the basement and into a 50,000 sq foot manufacturing facility with over 50 employees at its peak. With at least 27 patents to his name, industry recognition, worldwide distribution of products, and numerous conference lectures by Tom, Tomtec became a leader and respected name in automating pharmaceutical and bioanalytical research. Tom always enjoyed work, and as his mind and body began to decline, his thoughts continued to be with his company, his employees, and the clients who became treasured friends. His final futuristic vision began over a decade ago to pioneer a paradigm shift in the handling of liquid blood samples to the dried blood spot (DBS) bio-sampling. A bold move but Tom’s passion and genius led to partnering with government agencies and leading clinical labs around the world to challenge an industry standard on to a new front.
Tom loved his family, his friends and his dog Annie, creating artwork in many mediums, and spending time at the Paugusset Club where he was the social director for many years. He enjoyed showing off his diving talent at the Paugusset pool, playing tennis and dancing. He and Joan could really cut up the rug! He was the creator of the Firecracker Tennis tournament held July Fourth every year, with custom made trophies from his workshop, a coveted award. Tom and Joan loved hosting many social parties at their home with a wide variety of friends.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of over 68 years Joan, his children Richard “Dick” Astle of Chicago, Edward “Ed” (Alice) Astle of NH, and Diane (Andy) Strait of New York City; his four grandchildren Sarah and Samantha Astle, Dylan and Lea Bagley; nephew Kevin Astle and nieces Marcell Astle and Joy (Jim) Santner and two grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Richard “Dick” Astle and sister-in-law Emily Christine “Chris” Astle of Fort Collins, CO.

Demo, Dorothy Josephine
Dorothy Josephine Demo, 80, of Milford, beloved wife of 60 years to the late James Vincent Demo, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2021 at home with her children by her side.
Dorothy was a teacher, both in her personal and professional life. A loving wife and mother of two, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher; first she earned a Bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook University and later a Master’s from C.W Post in Reading. It was her profound love of books that inspired her to become a reading teacher, and she believed reading was at the center of all learning.
But her greatest joy in life was her family, which started with her husband, Jim. Dorothy and he were inseparable from the moment they met each other at a church dance in Queens, NY when she was 17 – it was the beginning of a great love story. Three years later they were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Queens Village and eventually bought a home in Kings Park, Long Island where they would raise a family. Over the years, they enjoyed traveling – to Europe, Hawaii and throughout the United States – playing golf and spending time at their vacation home in Jupiter, Florida. She made many close friends along her travels and was a good friend to all who knew her. She treasured her time with her family and three grandchildren who knew her as Nana, they were at the center of her universe for the last 13 years. Even as Dorothy bravely battled multiple myeloma for the past six years, she continued to be always present in their lives and never missed a birthday, holiday or milestone. She faced each and every treatment with grace and optimism that inspired everyone around her. It was perhaps in these moments that she was her family’s greatest teacher.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Danielle (Jeffrey) and James (Chloe); grandchildren, Jack, Juliette, and Colette; and sister-in-law, Joan (Donald) and nieces Lisa (Jonathan) and Robyn (Lou). Her great love story with James continues, predeceasing him by just five days, further demonstrating their connection and devotion to each other.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on March 5, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 59 Church St., Kings Park, NY. Please wear masks and abide by social distancing regulations. A livestream of the Mass will be available on the church’s website at https://stjosephskp.org/live/. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3442 Route 112, Coram, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation at give.themmrf.org or P.O. Box 414238, Boston, MA 02241-4238.
Demo, James Vincent
James Vincent Demo, 82, of Milford, beloved husband of 60 years to the late Dorothy Josephine Demo, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2021 at home with his children by his side.
James was 19 when he met Dorothy at a Sunday night dance at the Ascension Church in Flushing, Queens. Immediately smitten, he proposed a date to pick her up in his brand-new car – a gold 1957 Chevy that he was picking up the following week. Whether it was the car, or his beautiful blue eyes, a true love affair with Dorothy began that would span over six decades. They married in 1961, ultimately settling in Kings Park, NY. James began his career at General Mechatronics in Farmingdale, NY – an aerospace parts supplier to Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and Sikorsky Aircraft. Through hard work, loyalty and perseverance, over a 40-year career he worked his way up from a machinist on the shop floor to Vice President of Operations.
But it was not work that defined James – he was a family man at heart, and the time he spent at home surrounded by his wife and children could be counted among the happiest moments of his life. His love for Dorothy and his children was paramount, and later in life, he looked forward to spending time with his 3 grandchildren. He was a selfless husband, father and granddad – nothing was too much trouble and he would go out of his way to make his family’s life easier.
In his leisure time, James loved taking care of his home – improving its beauty when landscaping as well as projects like building an office in the basement so Dorothy would have a place to study while she attended college. On lazy Sunday afternoons you would find James at home, relaxing and watching golf or his beloved Yankees on the television accompanied by his Labrador retriever Sable, and later, Bailey. He also had a passion for golf and he loved his time in the men’s club at Smithtown Landing Golf Course and playing a round with friends at his vacation home in Jupiter, Florida.
James is survived by his children, Danielle (Jeffrey) and James (Chloe); grandchildren, Jack, Juliette, and Colette; sister, Joan (Donald) and nieces Lisa (Jonathan) and Robyn (Lou). He passed away just 5 days after Dorothy, continuing their great love story for eternity.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in James’s memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation at give.themmrf.org or P.O. Box 414238, Boston, MA 02241-4238.

Ortoleva, Guy G.
Guy G. Ortoleva, 100, of Milford died peacefully surrounded by family on February 12, 2021 after a long illness. Guy lived a full and active life, had a wonderful sense of humor, and will be missed by many.
Always a bit of a Renaissance man, Guy graduated from McLane Art Institute in New York City and went on to use his talents for both work and pleasure. His career spanned many years from designing radio cabinets to creative displays in retail. As a longtime employee of Sears he used his artistic design, carpentry, and electrical skills to build remarkable displays and in some years, elaborate Santa’s workshops. A do it your-selfer before it was fashionable, Guy could build anything from recovered parts and some innovation. His children and anyone who worked with him learned many tips and techniques to solve problems with style and polish. In 2001 he was honored by Sears with a trip to Chicago to meet with top executives in appreciation for his 50 years of creative and loyal service.
An accomplished artist, especially of area landscapes, many of Guy’s watercolors were displayed at the Milford Public Library and can be found adorning the walls in the homes of each of his children. He had a diverse set of interests including photography, hypnotism, palm reading and stilt walking. He enjoyed music and could play the piano by ear.
In his younger days Guy was a daredevil pilot and enjoyed flying Piper Cub planes. He could often be seen performing his hair-raising stunts over the family owned Elm Terrace grounds in West Haven when flying was less restrictive, and his independent nature could take flight. Although he set aside his painting and flying interests while raising his family, he was able to return to painting watercolors and even flying for a short time following his retirement.
Born August 8, 1920, the youngest child of Giovanni and Angelina Ortoleva, Guy grew up in the Wooster Square area of New Haven. He loved spending time chatting and playing cards with family and a few close friends. His family likes to think Guy passed on Friday morning to make it in time for the traditional Friday night pinochle game with his beloved predeceased siblings Jim, John, Ernie, Mary, and brother-in-law Vito.
Guy was also predeceased by his first wife, the late Helen Mooney. He is survived by Barbara Lynch Ortoleva his devoted wife of over 64 years and his nine adoring children: Guy E. Ortoleva (Susan) of Hamden, Daniel Ortoleva of Milford, Donna Burlison of Wallingford, Carol Cunningham (Edward) of Andover, Walter Ortoleva (Luba) of Milford, Thomas Ortoleva (Tracie) of Old Lyme, Barbara Petrillo (John) of West Haven, Peter Ortoleva (Holly) of Orange, and Lori Ortoleva-Donnelly (Jim) of Wallingford. He also leaves behind 18 grandchildren and the list of great-grandchildren continues to grow.
The family would like to thank Tanya, Lawayna and Debra of Marcel Home Care for their gentle care and devotion to Guy and his family and VNA Community Healthcare and Hospice for their guidance and support.

Reekie, Michael D.
Michael “Skip” Reekie, 54, passed away in the early hours of Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital. If you knew Skip you know he would never back down to a good fight. He gave throat cancer a run for its money in early 2020. The way he died is just like the way he lived: he wrote his own rules, he fought authority and he paved his own way. He will be sadly and sorely missed by his loving wife, Karen “Muffin” Reekie. Skip was a father whose world revolved around providing for his children (while also cracking the best jokes in town), David Reekie, Dillon Reekie, and Sydnie Reekie. He was raised alongside his loving family, which includes his father, Ronald Reekie, his mother, Patricia Reekie(D), and his two siblings, William Reekie, and Diane Moch. He had many niece’s and nephew’s that he loved as well. Skip was above all else a family man, followed very closely by the storyteller. He had the ability to have a witty comeback for almost any conversation, something that he passed on to everyone in the family. If Skip was in the room it did not matter what kind of day you were having, you were bound to laugh. On a regular day he usually enjoyed making small talk with the Dunkin employees or lightly bullying his daughters in law, Bailey McIlhoney, and Brooke Reekie. As for his hobbies he enjoyed building anything from the ground up, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and long walks on Deerfield beach in Milford. Skips legacy will live on as he left a mark on everyone that knew him. He’s sense of humor and charm will be forever remembered and missed by all of those that loved him. We will be holding a gathering on May 1st, 2021 that will be open to the public (Following mandated covid guidelines) to honors Skips life. If you would like to attend and pay respects, please reach out to the family for details. Funeral arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the Adzima Funeral Home-Stratford.
