A 1982 graduate of Foran High School, he worked for many years at Howard Johnson’s and SNET where many cherished friendships were formed. All who encountered John would be greeted with a big smile, a warm hello, and a funny story.
John stepped up the expectations of what it is to be an uncle and proved to be the best anyone could ask for. He loved being a part of his nieces and nephews’ activities, whether it was as their baseball coach, biggest fan at a dance performance, supporting them at daily life events, enjoying dinner with them, or simply having fun teaching them his uncle shenanigans. His nieces and nephews were very close to John and miss him dearly.
John was an avid softball player in Milford, Stratford, and Bridgeport for many years, as well as coaching the Stratford United Methodist team to championships in the Tuesday night Bridgeport Inter-Church League. One of his favorite annual traditions was participating in the infamous Thanksgiving morning Toilet Bowl football game coordinated and sponsored by the Smith brothers.
An enthusiastic sports fan, John truly enjoyed attending baseball games at Yankee Stadium with his brother Michael, brother-in-law Christian, nephews, and friends. John also had a knack of knowing when to show up at Jill’s house for warm homemade chocolate chip cookies (Mercie’s recipe), raisin bread (Gram’s recipe), and Jill’s delicious dinners with to-go containers in hand.
A self-taught automobile mechanic, he enjoyed fixing his BMWs, detailing them for car shows, and joining his friends at the racetrack and BMW Car Club events across the country, particularly Autocross and the annual BMW Oktoberfest.

He was an avid sportsman as a young man and continued to be a sports fan his entire life. He loved baseball and football, first the Brooklyn Dodgers, and later the “maybe next year Mets and Giants”. Carl Edwin Wennerstrand
Carl Edwin Wennerstrand (Ed), 86, of Milford, passed away on February 14, 2024. Born on October 9, 1937, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Carl and Gladys (Smith) Wennerstrand.
Growing up in Chicago, then Evanston, Ed cut short his schooling to join the U.S. Air Force at age 17 during the Korean War to be a Communications Center Specialist. He served honorably overseas in Japan and Korea. He then earned a Bachelor’s degree in English at Northern Illinois University where he heard The Dave Brubeck Quartet for the first time and, as he would say “it changed my life.” Soon after he met “Gael, the love of my life,” and he settled down to raise his family. His exceptional business insight and studies at The Wharton School (Penn) led to roles of increasing responsibility in the audio industry becoming President of several stereo companies. In these roles Ed traveled the world, was honored in the industry and even won a Clio award. While he developed a love for fast, foreign cars, his down-to-earth side would often find him in his garden eating his tomatoes right off the vine, practicing the drums, drawing, or coming up with ever-creative ways to thwart determined squirrels from pillaging his birdfeeders.
An avid golfer, swimmer, fisherman and ever-hopeful Cubs fan since his youth, Ed found his true joy when he moved the family to CT and fell in love with tennis. For over 40 years he would play many times a week into his 80s. He loved playing games and teaching tennis to his young grandchildren. A lifelong jazz aficionado and hi-fi expert, his house was always filled with music, to the delight of his devoted daughters. The music was heard throughout a good portion of Candlewood Lake due to its sheer volume and incredible quality. Upon retirement and moving back to the Midwest, Ed liked to refer to himself as a “certified tennis bum”. He enjoyed organizing tennis clubs, attending family events, and volunteering at the local tv station or at his sister Gerry’s church when she could convince him. The stubborn Swedish streak ran strong in his heart, and he loved his Scandinavian heritage and extended Swedish family, as well as his beloved dogs Bingo, Daisy, Gunner, Lola and Ruby.
3 years ago, Ed’s daughters finally convinced him to move back to CT in his aging years, where he received the best possible health care by West Haven Veteran Affairs Medical Center. A highlight at this time was finally seeing Geno Auriemma coach his beloved UConn Huskies Women’s Basketball team at Gampel Pavilion. In his final days, he was peacefully surrounded at home in Milford by his daughters with so much love and affection. He will be greatly missed.
Ed is survived by his children, Anne (Serge) Wennerstrand, Colleen (Tim) Lord, Jill (Mark) Tanner, and; grandchildren, Erin, Kevin, Liam, Mackenzie, and; siblings, Shirley (Ted) Klinka, and Judy Wennerstrand; and many caring nieces and nephews.
