Ursula was the first-born daughter of Otto Elias, a language professor and Berta Orth, a family physician. Her sister Irmgard was born four years later. Otto, who was a German Jew, became concerned for his family as anti-Jewish sentiment in Germany grew into religious persecution.
With much planning, the family left Berlin, immigrating to the United States in 1938 to build a new life together in America.
The family settled first in New York. Ursula attended Smith and then Radcliffe earning a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Ursula had started her PhD after Harvard opened its doctorate programs to Radcliffe, when she met Robert Hindel, a dashing young Viennese man who was also attending Harvard. Over the next twelve years, Ursula and Robert had six children, all of whom survive Ursula.
In 1968 the family returned to Germany where Robert took a management position with Picker International Corp. During these five years, Ursula organized many trips throughout Germany and Austria, providing a wonderful learning experience for the children.
In 1973, the family moved to Cleveland, OH, and Ursula began a career as a German-English translator and occasional interpreter. After all the children left home, the couple moved once more, to Orange, CT. Ursula obtained a paralegal certificate and joined the West Haven firm of Mirto, Ketaineck and Barrett, PC. There she served as a paralegal for the next 30 years until she retired in 2020 at the age of 91.
In October 2020, Ursula relocated to Riderwood, a Senior Living Community, in Silver Spring, MD, to be closer to her daughter Lore and son Martin. Ursula greatly enjoyed her home there, especially communing with the many birds, squirrels and deer who came regularly to her feeders.
