Berni, Silvio A.
On April 12th, God called his son, Silvio A. Berni, home to heaven at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with the COVID-19. Silvio was born in Italy to Bruno and Teresina Berni. He was a dedicated family man and leaves behind his wife, Cathy, and their children; Erin, Michael, Teresina and Faith and is also survived by his son-in-law, Jason, two grandsons, Bradley and Beckett as well as his sister, Maria, and her daughter, Katerina. Silvio had a large family that included many in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins around the world and he loved keeping in contact with and visiting so many of them.
Even though he would tell you that he was “just an accountant”, he was the Vice President of Corporate Development and Controller at GGCP, Inc. in Greenwich. Silvio was known among those who loved him for his generous and compassionate nature. He was always willing to help everyone, however they needed it. He was an active member at Christ the Redeemer Church and the Knights of Columbus. Throughout his life and career, he loved interacting with family, colleagues, friends and strangers. He could have a long conversation with anyone, and often did! He had many lifelong friends he kept in touch with until the very end.
Silvio’s eventual final resting place will be in Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY, so he can be with his parents and nephew, Alex. Due to the current climate, a celebration of his life will happen when it is deemed appropriate. A mass was offered for him by the Gabelli Family at Fordham University on April 20th and can be viewed online. In lieu of everything being offered, please consider making a donation in his name to any of the following organizations whose work Silvio admired: The Beth-el Shelter, the Woodruff Family YMCA, the Connecticut Food Bank or the Boys and Girls Village in Milford.
Berrien, Allen Groves
A lifelong Milford resident, Allen Graves Berrien was born on December 27, 1932 to C. Gordon Berrien and Helen G. Berrien and died on April 13, 2020. It is so fitting that he passed on a stormy weather day. Few things brought him more joy than a good storm, it was almost as though he arranged it.
He is survived by his brothers: David N. (Judy) Berrien of Tallahasee, FL and Peter L. (Judy) Berrien of Dennis, MA; by his children: Allen D. Berrien of Falls Village, Nancy (Stephen) Bennett, of Milford, Laurel (William) VanWilgen of Branford, and Leigh Bak of Milford; his grandchildren: Andrew Bodick, Katharine Mix, Stephen Bak, Emily Bak, Kate Briggs, Elizabeth Berrien, Heather Berrien, and Douglas Berrien; and by Florence Berrien, his former wife, mother of his children, high school sweetheart, and lifelong friend.
Allen graduated from Milford High School in 1950 and served in the US Navy from 1951 – 1955. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he worked at Pratt and Whitney while attending Quinnipiac College where he obtained his Associates Degree.
He was the owner and operator of Milford Boat Works which was founded by his father in 1946. Allen may not have been the founder, but he and Flo, together with his longtime business partner Barry Peale, grew the boatyard into the amazing facility it is today. Until the day he died, one of his favorite things to talk about was what was going on at the boatyard. If we were doing something wrong, he’d let us know.
He was a consummate boat handler. At first, it seemed to be just bravado but it turned out he was just so darned confident and skilled. He did scare the you-know-what out of his family many times with said bravado.
His sailing skills earned him many awards throughout Long Island Sound and beyond. Many Berrien dogs got to drink from the abundance of silver-plated trophies that he collected over the years. He got a big kick out of that…dogs drinking out of silver-plate and kids drinking out of jelly jars.
Sea Scout Ship 25 was formed in his living room nearly 60 years ago. From that time until it was disbanded about ten years ago, it provided many young men and women with an education about being on the water, sailing and adventure. Allen remained in touch with many of the original Sea Scouts.
Allen served for many years as a volunteer firefighter in the City of Milford, ultimately serving as Captain of Arctic Engine Company Number 1. Flo and his children all remember the sound of the Plectron going off in the middle of the night, and Dad racing off to a fire. We all super-enjoyed that magnetic blue light he stuck on the roof of the car, especially when he let us go to a fire with him. How he ever had the energy to get up and go to work the next morning still puzzles us.
He was an early board member who volunteered tirelessly for Connecticut Marine Trades Association in its infancy. He was very proud of his work with the marine trades, especially in establishing a boat show and in lobbying for legislation about anything involving the water. He co-founded CHUM (Concerned Harbor Users of Milford) with his dear friends Al Hotchkiss and Ken Neff. Together they brought many issues important to the vitality and environment of Milford Harbor into the eyes of the public.
He served as Harbormaster in Milford, served on the Harbor Commission for many years and worked hard to form Milford’s Harbor Management Plan, the first of its kind in the State of Connecticut. He was instrumental in the planning and building of Milford’s Lisman Landing Marina, the public marina in Milford. When he got frustrated by the slow-moving wheels of planning for the marina, he engaged a local architect and just paid for the plans. Allen just believed in getting things done.
He was an active and devoted member of Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees there including the Board of Trustees and was instrumental in forming the Foundation for the church. Ironically, he wasn’t born a Methodist; he was raised a Congregationalist. Every Sunday morning, his Mom would clean him up and send him off to Sunday School at the “Big White Church”. Until he came home with a perfect attendance award from the Methodist church, she was none the wiser. It turned out the Methodist church was a shorter walk. Bingo!
He never met a restaurant that he didn’t feel deserved his utmost devotion and attention. When dementia forced his move to assisted living, we found the Styrofoam packing still in his oven… ten years after it was installed. He struggled with how to leave a proper tip and was generous to a fault. Since Mom always did the math when they were married, Dad just thought it best to round up. If the bill was $21, he’d round it up to $40! Quite a few happy servers out there!
He served on so many committees and boards that it’s really hard to remember them all. I think what we’d like to remember is that if he believed in something, he would work to make it happen. What more to share about Allen? He was a voracious reader, an unbridled sharer of opinions, a devotee of corny jokes, loved gardening and trees, and was as hard a worker as was ever born. He was a tough employer but always fair. He loved all dogs and shared a special bond with his own dogs throughout his lifetime. Additionally, the man just plain loved to drive. Not your typical Sunday afternoon drive mind you. Proof? When he volunteered with the International Executive Service Corps, he drove to Guatemala, not once but twice.
All of these things made Allen an amazing man and a memorable character. It would be wrong to ignore the fact that when you added dementia to his strong personality traits, the outcome was “challenging.” This made his later years difficult for his family, friends, and caregivers (and downright torture for him as his independence slipped away). To that end, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the amazing care provided to him by Shana Hylton, which allowed him to remain in his beautiful home for as long as possible. Special thanks to Dean Swanson of Woodbury, former operator of Hill’s Service Station at the corner of Lafayette and Broad. We lovingly referred to his tenure “visiting” at Dean’s as “adult daycare.” Dean is truly as good a friend as can be had.
Thanks as well to the amazing staff at Wesley Village who provided care and comfort to Dad and finally to Dr. Susan Kashaf of the West Haven VA Hospital. Words cannot describe how special she was to Allen, she “got” him, and that wasn’t always easy.
If you feel the need to honor Allen in some way, please do something nice for someone. If you’re reading this, you probably already do nice things, just do something even nicer.
Cody-White Funeral Home in Milford is assisting the family with arrangements and there will be no services at this time. The family will plan an event in the future where we hope more “colorful” stories about him can be shared. To leave online condolences, please visit www.codywhitefuneralservice.com.

DeVito, Vito J.
Vito Joseph DeVito, 94, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2020 in a Bristol nursing home after a brief illness. Vito was born on December 17, 1925 in Stamford, CT, to the late Nicholas and Mary (Nardozza) DeVito. He moved to New Haven upon getting married to Mary Palmieri in 1954, and then to Orange in 1962, where he and Mary resided for the remainder of their lives. Vito was a legendary schoolboy star in baseball and basketball at Stamford High School, where he established baseball records that stood for decades, and where he played alongside his childhood friend and future New York Giants football star and Hall of Famer Andy Robustelli. Vito was signed to a professional contract by the New York Yankees out of high school in 1943, but like most young men his age at that time, service to his country took priority. After spending his rookie season with Binghamton of the Eastern League, he enlisted in the Army, where he proceeded to earn the Purple Heart fighting in the 3rd Army in Europe under General George S. Patton in World War II. Returning stateside after the war, Vito resumed his baseball career with the Yankees minor league affiliate in Amsterdam, NY, and although he was performing well (including once getting four hits off Yankee legend Whitey Ford in a spring training game), he was released in the Spring of 1947 in a cost-cutting move. He then joined the independent Stamford Pioneers for one year and played against some of the best barnstorming talent of his day, including Satchel Paige, Minnie Minoso, and Larry Doby. He went on to play for the Indians and Cubs organizations as well, climbing as high as Triple-A for Cleveland’s San Diego Padres affiliate in the Pacific Coast League in 1948, the year of the last Indians World Series championship. However, the post-war baseball talent glut was just too much to overcome, and after a few more stops on the minor league circuit, Vito decided to end his pursuit of major league glory and leave professional baseball for good in 1952, although he did continue to play semi-pro ball for the West Haven Sailors for four years. Always keenly aware of the whimsical nature of pro ball, Vito continued his education by taking college courses in the off-seasons, eventually earning a Bachelor’s degree from Arnold College in Milford, CT (while also coaching baseball at the school) and a Master’s degree from New York University. Years later, he also received his 6th Year Certificate in Educational Administration from the University of Bridgeport. Vito served as an assistant basketball and baseball coach at Arnold College until the school closed in 1953, whereupon he took a job teaching in the West Haven school system. In 1957 he moved to the Milford system, where he would remain for the next 29 years. After a four-year stint at Milford High, Vito coached football and baseball and taught physical education at Jonathan Law High before moving on to the newly opened Joseph Foran High in 1973 to become Athletic Director and baseball coach, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. The athletic complex at Foran High is named in his honor. In addition to his full-time duties in the Milford school system and raising five children with Mary, Vito somehow found the time to coach part-time at Yale University for almost four decades. He was an assistant basketball coach under longtime friend Joe Vancisin from 1956 to 1973, where their 1969-70 squad shocked the legendary “Pistol” Pete Maravich and LSU in the finals of the Rainbow Classic tournament. Vito then moved over to football, where he served as an assistant freshman and varsity coach under good friend Carm Cozza from 1973 until 1992. Along the way, Vito touched the lives of many future professional athletes, including Calvin Hill, Dick Jauron, Gary Fencik, John Spagnola, Kenny Hill and Rich Diana, and his 36-year stint at Yale is believed to be the longest tenure of any coach in the University’s storied history. In his retirement, Vito served as a Commissioner of the West Haven Twilight Baseball League for almost two decades while also driving a bus for local school systems. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Vito and Mary were both devoted parishioners of the Church of the Holy Infant in Orange. Vito received many honors and awards along the way, including the West Haven Twilight League Gold Bat Award, the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the Greater New Haven Diamond and Tap-Off Club Hall of Fame. But personal accolades were never important to Vito, as he instead valued and took pride in being a positive influence on the lives of generations of young people. Vito was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary in 2014 and his beautiful granddaughter Nicole in 2015. Vito is survived by his five children: David and his wife Betsy (Dommer) DeVito of Wallingford, Nancy DeVito of Bethany, Michael and his wife Kathy (Park) DeVito of Orange, Robert and his fiancée Lisa Nolt of Hebron, and Susan (DeVito) Justice and her wife Noreen (Hartney) Justice of Burlington. He also leaves behind nine beloved grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A private Military Service was held on April 30, 2020 in Orange Center Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at a future date to be determined. Arrangements have been entrusted to the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 830 Jones Hill Rd., West Haven. Sign Vito’s guest book online at

Farrelly, James (Seamus) Joseph
James (Seamus) Joseph Farrelly, 85, most recently a resident of South Yarmouth, MA, beloved husband of Sheila Farrelly, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13th. Born on August 1st, 1934 in Potahee, County Cavan, Ireland, he was the son of the late Sean and Rose Ann Farrelly.
Seamus grew up in Cavan, the oldest of nine siblings. He went on to attend St. Columban’s College in Dalgan Park, Co Meath. Seamus excelled on the Gaelic Football pitch, and in the classroom. A brilliant mind and endless capacity to learn, supported by a mantra to give nothing less than 100% effort. Traits that would follow him throughout his career. From there he joined the Columban Missionaries, and he spent several years in Japan as a young missionary, eventually earning a Master degree in Asian Studies from Seton Hall University. He left the Columbans in 1972 and eventually wound up in New York City, where he embarked on a second career in the insurance industry. Jim, as his professional friends and colleagues would come to know him, soon garnered the reputation in his professional field of always conducting business as a true gentleman, marrying his unparalleled work ethic with an unwavering commitment to integrity and respect for all of his colleagues. He was also known as an encyclopedia, of sorts. Whether it involved the interpretation of contract language or remembering the lineup of counterparties from contracts twenty years old…if you had a question, you knew where to turn. The relationships he forged throughout his career, but especially at Odyssey Re (previously Skandia America), would remain with him until his final days.
It was in New York City where Seamus eventually met Sheila, his loving wife of forty-two years. A group dinner at Neary’s on 57th Street, with some undertones of an arranged date, would lead to a marriage filled with love, spirituality, family and even some adventure. Seamus and Sheila grew together through their strong bond with their Catholic faith and a shared level of reverence to the relationships and support provided by their respective families. Seamus was a big fan of the arts, and he introduced Sheila to his love for classical music, particularly the opera. He had a fondness for photography that has been well documented in his treasure trove of photos and Kodachromes, most of which depict the happy times they spent with the friends and family they loved so dear.
After enjoying life together as a couple, including some time in Cincinnati, OH, exploring the local golf courses and midwest sushi houses, Seamus and Sheila moved back and settled in Westchester County, NY, where they welcomed their two sons, Sean and James. Seamus had already cemented his reputation as a loving husband and great friend and colleague, but fatherhood was yet another opportunity for Seamus to impact the lives of his family using the indelible characteristics he held so dear from youth. He loved his family unconditionally, and he showed this love through action and sacrifice. The examples are far too numerous to capture in totality, but the family understood one simple fact…Dad would be there. Whether shuttling the boys to sports or assisting with last-minute proofreading at 6AM, he was always there. No matter how seemingly trivial, he approached every task with passion and complete dedication, giving you the comfort that he was providing undivided attention and guidance. He remained heavily involved in the boys’ lives and worked tirelessly to guide them with the morals instilled in him through his strong faith and past life experiences. But Seamus’ actions will remain the strongest influence on his children, even above his wisdom on the attributes of good sushi and tolerable golf course etiquette. His love of family persisted until his final days, as he met and cherished his four granddaughters.
Seamus fought through a variety of ailments in most recent years with the same determination he exhibited throughout his life. He was cared for compassionately by his family, particularly his wife, Sheila, whose unwavering care allowed Seamus to live out his final years with the utmost dignity and grace, and his son, James.
Seamus will be remembered fondly by many. He will be missed by his loving wife, Sheila, their children, son Sean Farrelly and daughter-in-law Denise Farrelly, son Dr. James Farrelly, MD, and daughter-in-law Laura Farrelly, and four granddaughters, Corinne, Eden, Juliet, and Quinn. He will also be missed by his siblings, Bridget O’Rourke, Padraig Farrelly, Eileen Farrell, Rose Shaughnessy, Frank Farrelly, and Mary Bolderston, in addition to many nieces, nephews and family members. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Sean Farrelly and Ted Farrelly.
In light of the restriction in place due to the current pandemic, the family will not be having funeral services at this time. The family will have a memorial service to honor Seamus with the support of his family and friends once the current travel restrictions are lifted, and we will communicate the details at that time.

Gall, Joseph Louis
Joseph Louis Gall, 74, of Rocky Hill, passed away on April 12, 2020 at Autumn Lake in Cromwell. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Joseph and Viola (Geri) Gall.
Joe lived in Milford all of his life and was a beach kid. He worked as a machine operator for Rivet Manufacturing. Joe served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Milford VFW Post #7788.
Joe is survived by two sons, Daryl Gall and Ryan Gall, both of Stratford, a brother, Arland Gall of West Haven and a sister, Schari Gilmore of Milford.
Along with his parents, Joe was predeceased by two brothers, Stephen Gall and Robert Gall.
Joe was known for his great sense of humor and his laugh. He was always so generous in wanting everyone to enjoy their time together. He loved his family and always talked about his sons. He was very proud of them. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, talking walks to the docks. Almost, every summer, as a young man, with his family he would go to Beaverdale, PA to visit. Joe and his brothers would visit at Uncle Eddie’s house, sitting around drinking beers and laughing all night long. Such good memories of time together.
He was a jokester who loved calling his nephews “meatball heads”!
Growing up, he had a great friend Tommy, and my mother would say that he loved to hang out with his friend and drink Pepsi and eat potato chips! A loyal friend. Tommy and Joe joined the Navy together on the buddy system. He was like a second father to his sister. Even with the age difference like best friends. Having breakfast at the Bridgeport Flyer. He loved “Lasses” and their famous roast beef sandwiches.
When Steve and his brother Joe would get together – than would just laugh. A lot of laughter characterized much of his life. The wonderful staff at Rocky Hill VA said they will miss his smile.
We would like to thank everyone at the Rocky Hill State Veterans Home for their love, concern and great care for Joe. Thank you to all of his friends he made there too.
A service and burial with full military honors will be held at a later date due to Covid-19. To share memories or send condolences to the family, please visit www.doolittlefuneralservice.com.

Predeceased by her; son Jeffery Masterson, sister Anne Masterson-Lebwohl and parents Evelyn Patricia Nolan and Michael Patrick Masterson.
Pebbles was born in Bridgeport, CT on May 10, 1963. She grew up in Stratford and graduated Bunnell High School in 1981. She had strong connections with Ireland and lived several years in Portland Oregon before moving back to Connecticut.
Pebbles was and will always be a loving energy in this world. She worked incredibly hard to raise her son Sean into the man he is today, sacrificing so much to ensure that he had a great life and always knew that he was loved. Pebbles would give you the shirt off her back and the last dollar in her pocket. She cared so much for so many and her legacy of love and happiness lives on in the lives of those she touched. She was a compassionate, loyal friend and a strong advocate for pet adoption. She was happiest in nature with her dogs and her soulmate and her later years were filled with the joy of the love of her family.
Though your light may have dimmed it was never extinguished,
the flicker lives on in the ones that you loved.
Together these flames burn brighter than ever,
They burn for you now to see from above.

In retrospect, it is amazing to reflect upon the scope of the social and scientific advancements that took place in the USA, from 1920 to 2020, during Bianca’s journey on earth. From transportation on horse-back to the introduction of cars, trucks and airplanes; from the use of gas lighting to the implementation of electricity into cities and homes nation-wide; from receiving news, entertainment and communication via radio, movie screens and rotary telephones, to the technoligical evolution of television, computers, PCs and cell phones; not to mention the NASA Moon Landing and space travel, Bianca experienced a journey that was full of on-going change and exponential social development that few people witness in one life-time!
At this challenging time, your thoughts and prayers for Bianca and her beloved Italy, as well as the United States of America, are requested. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home (203)-359-9999. To send condolences to the family, please visit www.gallagherfuneralhome.com.
