Katharine Bielik

Katharine Bielik, 91, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Joseph Bielik, passed away on August 21, 2025. Born on June 17, 1934 in Norwalk, CT, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Victoria (Sibiskie) Short.
Katharine and Joseph’s love story began early on in grammar school, and from those early days of friendship, a lifelong love blossomed. The two were high school sweethearts and married in their early twenties in 1955, embarking on a journey together that would span decades.

For their honeymoon, Katharine and Joseph braved the historic flood of 1955 to drive across the country to Mountain View, California. What began as a trip to celebrate their new life together turned into a year-long adventure as they made a temporary home in California to complete Joseph’s service in the U.S. Navy before returning to family in Connecticut when Katharine was expecting their first child. She remained closely connected to her family for the rest of her life.

Soon after welcoming her first child, Paula, into the world, she returned to work as a secretary for Bridgeport Brass, showing early on the unwavering work ethic that would become her hallmark. The goal of saving money for a down payment to purchase her first home was of upmost importance. She continued her professional journey with determination, eventually retiring from General Accident Insurance after many years of loyal service.

Her commitment to hard work was matched by an inspiring devotion to personal wellness. She remained active well into her later years, regularly exercising at the local YMCA and living by the principle that caring for oneself is just as important as caring for others.

Outside of her professional life, Katharine held both religion and connection close to her heart. Her deep devotion to her faith was seen as a longtime parishioner at Holy Infant Church, where she found community and spiritual nourishment. She regularly supported the Ladies’ Guild at church, where she developed lifelong friends and their weekly dinner tradition.

She held her friends made throughout every walk of life close, and her family even closer.

She leaves behind a legacy of purpose, dignity, and unwavering love and will be deeply missed by those who loved her.

Katharine is survived by her children, Paula (Robert) Baranowski, Christopher (Rhonda) Bielik, and Joseph Bielik; her grandchildren, Erika (Patrick) Lesko, Melissa (Ryan) Plourde, Ahna Bielik, and Aleksander Bielik; her great-grandson, Landon Lesko; her brother-in-law, Richard (Nancy) Bielik; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Katharine is predeceased by her grandson, Nicholas Bielik, and her brothers, Alvin (Sandra) Short and Anthony Short Jr.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the exemplary staff at Milford Health and Rehabilitation for the superior and compassionate care they provided Katherine over the last five months.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. She enjoyed cooking for them, which she was amazing at and leaving her house without an overstuffed stomach was nearly impossible. She was a kind woman that always liked to laugh, it was great to hear. Although she was not tall, it did not affect her toughness, this was one lady you did not want to mess with! A true testament to this was when her and her husband Julian moved from Poland to America to provide a safer and better life for their family. One of the things she really cherished was her time spent at the Casino; she went a lot! We are all better from knowing her and having her in our lives! She created a beautiful family which all have a piece of her in their heart. Her love and memories will live on forever!

She was predeceased by her mother, Eleanor Baker, and father John Baker. She is survived by her husband, Howard and children, Pam (William), Lynn, Jennifer (Robert), Christopher (Christina), John Michael, Marc, and Catherine and 10 grandchildren and her brother John (Denise). Born in Norwalk, CT June 18, 1948, and moved to Orange, CT into a house built by her mother, father, and grandparents, shortly after. Except for a brief period of time spent in West Haven, she lived her life as a proud Orange resident. She started her education in the Orange school system and went on to further education at Waynefleet, a private school in Maine, then receiving her RN/BSN at SCSU. Christie was always first in her classes, she would say the other students were always mad at her because she ruined every curve. She started her working career at Miles (Bayer) Labs as a chemist and then went on to work for over 30 years as an RN at Saint Raphael Hospital, while raising her family of seven children. She enjoyed her time at Saint Ray’s as an ICU nurse and eventually ended up working in the psych department. After leaving Saint Ray’s she tried several jobs, including visiting nurse and a short stent as the head nurse of a retirement home, but she finally found her dream “retirement” job working for her long-time doctor and friend, Dr. Frank Mongillo, as his office nurse/receptionist. We wish to thank the staff of the Yale New Haven Hospital, Smilow Cancer Center, especially the thoracic team led by Dr. Woodard and the nurses, aids and sitters on the 15th floor who took such personal care of her and after at Connecticut Hospice in Branford who also gave her loving and tender care in her final days. Services will be held the evening of Friday, August 15, 2025, from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green, 662 Savin Avenue, West Haven, CT. At 6:30 PM in the funeral parlor, the Connecticut Nurses Honor Guard will share their Nightingale Tribute to Christie. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Connecticut Hospice or to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A family celebration of Christie’s life will be held at a future date. She was born on November 5, 1924 in Bridgeport and was the daughter of the late Adam and Minnie Morazes Rinko. The Youngs moved to Milford in 1960. Eleanor joined the staff at Milford High School as a cafeteria worker in 1963 and remained there until her retirement serving many children and teachers who loved her very much. Her greatest joy was raising her children, providing a loving family environment and encouraging them to realize their potential. She later became a gram and meme and loved her three boys more than anything in the world. Later she was blessed to “finally” have a granddaughter join our family who she instantly fell in love with, even though she had to share her.
