Orange Eateries Get Graded

As school swings back into session for a new academic year, Orange restaurants are getting their own report cards. Town Sanitarian Brian Slugoski has been hard at work since July issuing letter grades to the town’s various eateries.

“It’s something the Board of Health decided they wanted to try,” said Slugoski. “Right now they’re looking at it as sort of a trial for the next year.”

That trial involves giving the various establishments in Orange that serve prepared meals a letter grade. The businesses are then required to display this grade in a prominent location where patrons can easily view it.

There are only three levels to the grading: A, B and C.

According to Slugoski the board wanted to avoid the connotations a business might suffer with a particularly bad rating. So the lowest rating available is a C.

“But that category does include things that would be considered a D or F,” Slugoski said.

He also noted that if an establishment earns a C but corrects the issue promptly, they can be regraded almost immediately at the department’s discretion.

Slugoski also emphasized that anyone who really wants the full picture of what is going on with a restaurant, can request to see the inspection reports. They are considered public information and available from his office via Freedom of Information requests.
