The Orange Police Department will grow by one with the addition of new officer, Makiem Miller, today at 3 p.m. The event will be a first for the department as they live stream the ceremony on Facebook.
Miller comes to Orange as an Officer. He previously served 10 months as the Chief of Police and Director of Campus Security for Belmont Abbey College.
Prior to that, Miller worked his way up the ranks in the New Haven Police Department, starting as a patrol officer in 1996 and retiring as a lieutenant in 2016.
Miller is a West Haven native and has a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Sacred Heart University as well as a Master of Arts from the American Military University. He also holds a post graduate certificate in public administration from the University of New Haven.
Miller’s swearing in will take place at the Orange Police Department at 3 p.m. but will be broadcast live over the department’s Facebook page. Police Chief Robert Gagne said this was a first for the department and they are looking forward to seeing how well it works.
Gagne also noted that there has been some speculation and confusion regarding Miller joining the force. Assistant Police Chief Anthony Cuozzo is retiring on Sept. 8. His replacement has not yet been named and while Miller will be an asset to the force, he is not stepping in to fill Cuozzo’s position. Gagne said the Board of Police Commissioner’s will start discussing who will take over as assistant chief soon.
