Bodnar, Elaine Mae
Elaine Mae Bodnar, 91, passed away peacefully at the Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford on Friday, July 6. As we expected, she waited for a moment when none of us were there to make her final exit.
Born in Bridgeport on May 24, 1927, Elaine was the youngest child of Steven and Margaret (Soltesz) Bodnar. She was predeceased by her parents, and by siblings Robert Bodnar, Margaret (Bodnar) Allen, Grace (Bodnar) Meyn, Stephen Bodnar and Len Bodnar. Although Elaine did not marry or have children, she spent 70 years of her life taking care of others, and advising, supporting, and doting on three generations of nieces and nephews:
Niece Peggy (Allen) Conner (Al), great-nephew Kyle Conner, great-nephew Chris Conner (Carla), and great-great-niece Cadence; nephew Stephen Allen (Elaine), great-niece Andrea (Allen) Jordan (Chris), great-niece Jessica (Allen) Soubotin (Mike), great-great nephew Caleb and great-great-niece Saki; niece Robin Senese (Pat); nephew Gary Meyn (Liz); niece Julie (Bodnar) Roberge (Richard), great-niece Elizabeth and great-nephew Andrew; nephew Christopher Bodnar (Christine); and niece Patricia Bodnar.
She was our beloved auntie, a lynchpin of our family, and her presence at holiday celebrations, birthday parties, and simply spending time will be very much missed.
Elaine grew up in the Fort Trumbull Beach neighborhood of Milford, and remained a “beach brat” at heart for her entire life. She attended Milford public schools, and went on to earn an A. A. in Arts from the Junior College of Connecticut, and a B. S. in Business Administration and M. A. in Education from the University of Bridgeport. Elaine’s work history ran the gamut from family employment at the iconic Fort Trumbull “pink bakery,” to a stint in the world of New York City retail, to her ultimate career in the world of educational administration. She served as Director of Financial Aid at the University of Bridgeport, Greater Hartford Community College, and Housatonic Community College.
Our Aunt Elaine was an extremely intelligent, independent, strong woman before it was fashionable for women to be those things. She set an enviable example, not only for us, but also for any who had the good fortune to know her, whether socially or professionally. Her personal mementos include multiple letters detailing colleagues’ respect for her knowledge and commitment to students. What stood out, though, was her “personal warmth…Elaine cares about students.” We are, and always have been, so very proud of her.
Elaine retired from professional employment in 1991, but remained active as a volunteer at the Audubon Society in Milford. She loved to travel, and enjoyed spending time in Rome, Budapest, Alaska, Florida, and on various Caribbean islands. After relocating to Ashlar Village in Wallingford, where she resided happily for the last fifteen years of her life, she enjoyed an active social life with a group of close and wonderful friends, and was an Ashlar volunteer and an enthusiastic member of the long-standing Trivial Pursuit club until shortly before her final illness. Her silly Halloween and New Year’s Eve get-ups were prize-winning, and her life-long reputation for being the life of the party and the best hostess ever was never better exemplified. Although we always knew Aunt Elaine could be entertaining, and loved a good laugh, we were surprised to learn that, in high school, she was known as “Bod,” and was named “wittiest” girl in her graduating class. Apparently, she provided almost constant entertainment for her classmates, especially in “hilarious” Spanish class.
Elaine loved animals, particularly cats, and we’re sure she’s now reunited with her adoring Juliet, along with the many strays who never would have survived without her care, and her adorable little dog Happy. She patronized many charities, but the two closest to her heart were the Audubon Society (she volunteered in Milford for many years) and the Humane Society. Honoring Elaine’s memory by making a charitable donation of any kind to any charity at all would very much please her.
Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that the Bodnars have always been a stubbornly tough lot—hardworking and perseverant no matter what the challenges, yet devoted to family, loving, and always ready to lend a hand, no matter what the need. Aunt Elaine exemplified these traits, and we hope to do her memory justice by carrying them forward as best we’re able. We all thank her, so very much, for everything.

Matar, Asma
Asma Matar, who started her life as an orphan and refugee, ended it as the beloved, elegant matriarch of a large family and a cherished pillar of her Christian congregation. She died Thursday, July 5, at her home in Milford, Conn.
She was the wife of the late Said Matar. Over the course of their 52-year-marriage, they survived the tumult of World War II, the upheaval of immigration to an unfamiliar land—and raising six children. They made their home in a pale yellow bungalow near Walnut Beach, where they warmly and frequently opened their doors (front, back and refrigerator) to their sprawling extended family from around the globe, and their many friends from around the corner.
Asma was a passionate teacher of the Bible, world traveler and a local style icon—unexpected outcomes for a girl born in Havana, Cuba, who grew up in a Church of England orphanage in Nazareth, Palestine after losing her mother. One of hundreds of girls in the orphanage, she modified her drab uniform to make it fit better, and challenged the orphanage sisters on their theology and skimpy dinner menus. A rebel was born.
She worked for the British Navy in Haifa as a teenager, where she was known as a great beauty with hazel green eyes and a sweet tooth. She left her home in Palestine, and then her second home in Lebanon for the U.S. – but they never left her. She often returned to the Middle East for visits, and most of the state of Connecticut became familiar with the wonders of Lebanon through Asma’s descriptions, videos and her superior skills as a cook of Middle Eastern food.
She was a devoted member of the Milford/Devon Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and her faith compelled her to share her beliefs with strangers and new friends made on her many travels. She shared with them her fervent hope of the resurrection to a paradise earth, and looked forward to the time she would once again see her parents, siblings and husband. She loved Jehovah God, and she loved people.
She also loved shopping. She had a natural eye for color, and could wear turquoise and lime and look fantastic. As with much of her life, she rewrote the rules by ignoring them.
She was happiest when she was exploring the world, touring Italy’s Amalfi Coast, surveying the jewelry shops of Rome, wandering the Champs-Élysées in Paris and the bustling streets of London and Windsor. She was most content when she was in Middle East, where she traveled extensively with her husband, siblings, children and grandchildren. She loved visting old friends in Beirut, eating fish and fresh salad at the Sea of Galilee, and walking Jerusalem’s colorful souk, and Nazareth’s spice markets. But her favorite place was a small stone apartment building in Haifa, which was her father’s home.
She also traveled across the U.S., often visiting her siblings in Florida, and taking trips to California, Las Vegas, Chicago, Detroit, and North Carolina.
English was not her first language, but she studied and taught in it, made jokes in it, and made it her own. She developed her own catch-phrases. When pushed to get new furniture, she asked: “Why dress your house, when you can dress yourself?”
She was a master story-teller in two languages. She enthralled her grandchildren with stories of her life, and fables from her childhood. Bible stories were more exciting as she told them, with cliff-hangers, and vivid descriptions of the action. With the same gusto, she would nearly re-enact favorite fictional movies.
She loved the music of Elvis, the Honeymooners, parties and late nights in big cities. Even in her later years, she put younger people to shame with her energy: she was the first one on the dance floor, the last one to go to bed and the first one up in the morning, lipstick perfect, ready to go out into the world. She took up piano later in life, and played and sang often.
She is survived by her children Hilda Matar Audeh and her husband, Fouad, of Danvers, MA; Assad Said Matar and his wife, Jane, of Deep Gap, NC; Vivian Matar Schultz and her husband Jim, and Anhila Matar, George Matar, Paul Matar and his wife Tamam, of Milford.
She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, who knew her as Tayta (grandmother in Arabic.)
She was the last living member of her original family: her late parents Assad and Nahil Euaied, of Nazareth; and her late sisters Mary, Selma, Estrella and brothers Sam and Khalil.
A memorial service will be held July 21, Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 494 Milford Point Rd., Milford, Conn., 06460.

Margaret had a contagious laugh, was a voracious reader and a strong swimmer. She was famous for writing letters with enclosures of newspaper clippings, sent to family and friends from coast to coast. She was also a woman of all seasons. Walks in foggy, misty, or rainy weather reminded her of San Francisco, but she came to enjoy CT too. Her first snowfall in CT found her dancing in the yard, holding the corners of her apron to catch snowflakes.
Her family extends appreciation for the care in the last year of her life to her dear friends Esther and Luciana, as well as Tracy, Louis and Emma and the staff from Seacrest Retirement Center. Margaret often boasted that she had been “accepted to Yale”; per her request, upon her death, her body went to Yale for medical research purposes. Instead of a memorial service or flowers, her daughter, Marilyn, and granddaughter, Melody, hope you will take a walk or a swim, eat a lobster roll, or write a letter to a loved one, with a smile and memory of her in your heart.
