Roberta grew up in East Haven, to her parents, Joseph and Rosemary (Bohan) Mailhot (deceased). Her surviving siblings include her older sister Gail Bartelli and husband Ed Bartelli, brother Steven, brother Matthew and wife Annie, and several nieces and nephews. Being the youngest sibling in a predominately Irish Catholic family, and having more liberties than the other siblings, she became affectionately and forever called “The Brat”, and the love of their lives. On a late summer day in 1984 she was covering in the employee café when she met her future husband (and love of her life) Dan Holland. In order to see him more frequently, she pretended she needed his help with school work; even though she was the smart one. They dated for two years before getting married on Sept. 20, 1986. They had two boys, Steven and Alex who loved her very much.

Roberta received a data processing degree from Greater N.H. State Tech and continued to work towards her B.S., and then earn a master’s degree in IT Security at night. She loved what she did and became an instructor to share her knowledge with others.

In November of 2019, her son Steven and his wife Zoe had a baby girl, Olivia; Roberta became Grammy, and could not get enough of her beautiful granddaughter. Though they were five hours away, she visited as often as she could, and did all those things grandmothers love to do. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed crafts, reading, knitting, gardening, Disney, and all things Pittsburgh, but most of all, she loved her family.

She was deeply loved and respected, and will be missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Anne Morin

Anne M. Morin of Milford passed away peacefully on 24 August 2023. She was the beloved wife of 57 years to Robert B. Morin, as well as devoted mother to two children. Anne lived most of her life in Milford, but as a child, she lived some of her time in New York City with her grandmother and uncle. She was the eldest of six children born to Italian immigrants, Antonio and Rosalia Giardino.

As the product of a generation that didn’t see many women in upper management roles, Anne was employed with the Connecticut State Labour Department as an employment interviewer and then as a supervisor of personnel services for Norden-Ketay Corporation (now known as Norden Systems) in the former Milford office. However, she left her professional work life behind to focus on raising a family and making her children a primary focus during their formative years.

Anne was actively involved in a variety of volunteer civic duties. At the request of then Milford Mayor Joel Baldwin, she served as commissioner for the Milford Civil Service Commission. She also volunteered for the Milford Council for the Aged, the Milford Conservation Commission, and devoted hours as a social volunteer at Milford Hospital. In her earlier years, she tapped into her artistic skills by volunteering to teach drawing and painting to handicapped persons in Milford.

Anne’s personal interests in her younger years included tournament level tennis, archery, and horseback riding. And for much of her life, she enjoyed learning and excelling at organic pesticide-free gardening, growing fruits and vegetables at home, which supplemented year-round supplies using traditional canning and blanching techniques. Later in her life, Anne also enjoyed learning ballroom dancing with her husband, which provided much social interaction filled with laughter and togetherness with other dancers.

Anne’s distinctive talent in drawing and painting started in early childhood, and continued and flourished throughout her life. After graduating from Hunter College (City University of New York), she studied art at Paier College of Art in Hamden, Fairfield University, Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, as well as earning another degree from the University of New Haven, whilst simultaneously raising her children. She also improved her artistic skills using self-taught methods and attended many local workshops. Anne also took annual retreats to the artist colony seaside village of Rockport, Mass, a beloved holiday destination she shared with her family. Her artistic talents spanned many mediums, including pastels, watercolours, acrylic and oil-based painting. She earned numerous awards and nominations for her entry into various local art show exhibitions, including the Milford Fine Arts Council, the Connecticut Classic Arts, the Society for Creative Arts in Newtown, all of which she was an active member, and the Milford Art League, of which she was also a former president. Her artwork was frequently displayed during exhibitions at the Firehouse Gallery in Devon.

In addition to her deep love and devotion to family and friends, Anne was forever grateful for the gifts of a sense of humour, her love of the arts, and a lifelong spirituality. Ernest Pepe

Ernest Pepe, 77, of Milford, passed away on August 30th, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 19th, 1946, he is the beloved husband to Elaine (Sebas) Pepe.

Ernie has been an inspiration to his family long before it was conceived, through stories of how he grew up into the amazing husband, father, & ‘Grampy’ that they love so much.

The eldest of three brothers, as young boy Ernie was diagnosed with Polio, but he also dreamed of being an athlete. He was told by doctors he may gain the ability to walk again, but that the pain would most likely not allow him the strength to play sports.

But even as a child, Ernie was a shining example of what hard work, determination, & commitment to your goals can achieve. Not only did Ernie succeed at his dream to become an athlete, but he quickly rose to the title of Captain on nearly every team he became a part of. With a passion for soccer, baseball, & especially football, he was a natural born leader, valuing the heart of a player as much as their skill; which would lead him later in life to his true calling as the affectionately titled, ‘Coach Pep’.

Ernie graduated from Milford High School in 1966, & completed his education at Sacred Heart University. He then met Elaine Sebas, who would later become Mrs. Pepe, & celebrate over 51 years of marriage together. A devoted husband & family man, Ernie never missed a moment with the next loves of his life; his two daughters’, Cindy & Cheryl Pepe. He was then blessed with two grandchildren, Samantha Pepe & Tyler Stanko; who he spoiled, loved, & support like no one else.

Ernie was always a ‘numbers guy’; his brilliant mathematical mind & affinity for numbers helped him to hold a lengthy career as a successful accountant for Fairfield based General Electric (over 16 years), following an even more successful career as a top financial advisor; running his own business with Primerica Financial. Even in his leisure, Ernie rarely missed a morning without sitting in his armchair to complete his daily Sudoku, keeping his mind sharp.

Ernie was first dubbed the title of ‘Coach’ when his younger brother Brett was trying out for little league. There was simply too many kids interested in playing & rather than turning them away, Ernie was asked if he would become the head coach of a second team; & the rest was history! Ernie loved the kids he coached as much as his own family, & put in over 50 years with the Packers, Jonathan Law, & Foran football teams, even coaching his own grandson his freshman year! On October 23rd he was even honored at the Foran High School field by the Mayor of Milford, for his 50 year tenure stretch, post the announcement of his retirement. Ernie just couldn’t say goodbye to the kids, so he continued to coach awhile after.

When you think of Ernie, the many lives he touched, the following quote comes to mind: “Sometimes a winner is just a dreamer, who just won’t quit.” – Rudy (The film)

In addition to his beautiful wife Elaine (Sebas) Pepe, Ernie is survived by his mother, Trudy Assunto; his two brothers; Brett & Tony Assunto (Terry Assunto), eldest daughter, Cheryl Pepe (Rick Allred); two loving grandchildren, Samantha Pepe (Bryan Creevy) & Tyler Stanko (Haley Walters); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, & dear friends. Ernie was predeceased his youngest daughter as well as his father, Cynthia (Cindy) Pepe & Tony Assunto.

Toni was born on June 3, 1943 in Queens, NY to the late William and Charlotte Scheel. She was the beloved wife of the late Kai Erik Soderholm, with whom she joins in the afterlife.

As a young woman she did very well in school, and completed high school one year early, before moving on to Bellevue School of Nursing. She graduated in Bellevue School of Nursing in 1963 and became a pediatric nurse, due to her love of children. After this, she took further classes in NYU and also worked at William Paterson and Passaic County Community Colleges teaching other nurses. During this time, in 1965, she met Kai Soderholm, and they got married in June of 1966. Together they chose to move to a house in the woods in Stockholm, NJ in 1971, and had two children in the following two years.

Toni was a devoted mom, primarily staying home until both of her children started school. Then she became a school nurse at Lafayette Township School. Soon afterwards, she became a camp nurse at Silver Lake YMCA, giving her children the opportunity to enjoy full summers at this wonderful overnight camp. Toni was an incredibly caring mom throughout, with tremendous positive energy, openly encouraging her children to be the people they wanted to be. During these years, in addition to her work, she also helped other children in many ways, like volunteering as a school board member and a soccer coach.

Around 1995, Toni became a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Sussex County (UUFSC), a church that fit her open-minded caring mindset, and continued her frequent volunteerism. After retiring in 2004, she traveled to dozens of countries and cruised the world with her husband and friends, passing through the arctic circle, equator and around Cape Horn on their many journeys. She also continued with UUFSC and frequently volunteered. In 2010 she was determined to be the Senior of the Year by a Knights of Columbus council, and in 2012 was determined to be one of the 12 Outstanding Senior Citizens of Sussex County at the New Jersey State fair.

Toni is survived by her son, Karl Erik Soderholm, and his wife, Lori; her daughter, Heidi Charlene Hashagen, and her husband, Carl; and her brother Leo Feher. Philip Walter Spier Sr.

A lover of life, Phil Spier Sr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children on September 5, 2023. He was 86 years old.

Phil was one of those people in life that made you LAUGH a little louder, SMILE a little bigger and LIVE just a little bit better.

Phil was born in Danbury, Connecticut in 1937. He resided in Stuart and Palm City for many years before he moved to Port St. Lucie. Phil graduated from Greenwich High School in Greenwich, CT, then served in the US Navy’s 7th Fleet as a signalman. He loved cars and spent years racing in SCCA races. After selling his liquor store in Connecticut, he relocated to Stuart, Florida and became well-known selling Charles Chips to local businesses. Phil also opened The Sub Station Deli, as well as other enterprises. Phil and Kathy Spier Promotions started in the 1980’s, and began hosting home and local boat shows, and promotional events of all types. That business eventually became Eventmakers International, which grew to become a major event and rental company.

Phil served on various organizations and clubs, including as president of Western Greenwich Lions Club, director of Martin County Chamber of Commerce, president of Stuart Sports Car Club and Treasure Coast Vintage Car Club.
Phil lived his life with passion and curiosity. He started and ran many successful businesses, and was a gifted entrepreneur and a natural salesman. Phil knew how to dream big, work hard and stay focused- and his efforts brought him success and satisfaction. He also had a quiet, reflective side which helped him stay grounded. Phil had a knack for putting people at ease with his quick wit and sense of humor, and he was good at making new friends. Phil never met a stranger.

He could drive anything, from the smallest sports car to a 40-foot motorhome. He loved the thrill of the open road and delighted in fantastic adventures with Kathy across North America. Yachting was another of his passions- once cruising from Canada to Florida and up the Tennessee Tombigbee (Tenn Tom) Waterway. After retiring, Phil enjoyed years of traveling, boating, RVing and spending time with family and close friends.
