Milford Alderman Win Smith has announced his candidacy for probate judge in the Milford-Orange Probate Court. Smith, a Republican, is a Milford resident and attorney at the Milford law firm Dey Smith Steele.

He recently held a fundraiser for family, friends and supporters at Stonebridge Restaurant in downtown Milford.

“I am honored by the outpouring of support from our community. My years of work in the region’s probate courts has given me the deep appreciation of the work done by the probate courts in our communities. Judge (Beverly) Streit-Kefalas ran a terrific probate court here and, if elected, I would follow in her footsteps” Smith said.

Streit-Kefalas is resigning after being appointed by Connecticut Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard A. Robinson to run the statewide probate court system. The special election to replace her will be held on Nov. 2, the same date as the general election.

“Attorney Smith’s support has really caught us by surprise,” said Milford Republican Town Chairman John Drapp of the group gathered at the fundraiser. “This is amazing. We far surpassed our goals for this ‘announcement fundraiser.’ It speaks well of his years of work on behalf of his constituents and in the probate courts. His qualifications speak for themselves.”

Current and former elected officials came out in support of Smith, including former House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, state Rep. Kathy Kennedy and Milford Board of Aldermen Minority Leader Tony Giannattasio.

The Republican nominating convention for probate court judge will be July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Board of Education room in the Parsons Complex at 70 West River St. in Milford.
