Over the next two decades, they did stints helping each of their children by babysitting. They attended countless baseball, basketball and football games along with dozens of plays, recitals and concerts that their grandchildren were in.
In 1995, they finally sold their house in Trumbull, when she found her “dream house” on the Green in Milford. After spending much time redesigning the layout, the house was finally completed in 1996 and she lived there until 2020.

Chatzopoulos, George
George Chatzopoulos, 55 of Orange passed away peacefully on January 10, 2022 at his home surrounded by family after a valiant battle with brain cancer. Beloved son of Dionissios Chatzopoulos and late mother Aggeliki Chatzopoulos of Makrissia, Greece. Loving brother of Dina Bajko (Adam) of Orange, Peter Chatzopoulos (Katerina) of Athens, Greece, Vasiliki Koufolia (Fotis) of Makrissia, Greece. Cherished uncle of AJ Bajko, Alexander Bajko, Evan Bajko, Eleni Koufolia, Aggeliki Koufolia, Thanasis Koufolia and Maria Angela Chatzopoulou. Also survived by many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. George was the epitome of the American dream. He migrated in 1988 to the United States in his early 20’s and started working alongside his father as a dishwasher. In 1995 he began his journey of entrepreneurship when he purchased Eats and Sweets in West Haven, CT. After selling Eat’s and Sweets he worked as the General Manager in the Athenian Diner in Milford, CT. In 2003 he bought Chip’s Family Restaurant of Orange, CT. This would be the beginning of his American dream coming to fruition. With hard work, dedication, ambition and endless devotion he created an experience that would allow his guests to become family. Through George’s passion and with the undying support of his family and special staff, Chip’s became a restaurant of choice for families and friends to gather. These core values are what he instilled in his Chip’s Team and has now become part of his legacy. George was extremely proud of his Greek heritage and humble beginnings. He will be remembered for many things but most of all for his loving and giving heart. He was the first to say, ” How can I help?” and offer to fundraise or contribute whatever way he could to a cause. Remembering there were people that supported him as he got started and then as his business was growing George believed deeply in “paying it forward”. One of the ways he did this, was through his annual Thanksgiving fundraisers where 100 percent of the proceeds were donated to a local charity. George was happy to contribute to organizations large and small such as Relay for Life, Make A Wish Foundation, Columbus Housing for the Veterans, Children’s Hospital of Special Care, Operation Hope, Marrakech Inc., Juneteenth Foundation, Orange Country Fair, Orange Fireman’s Carnival, local fire departments, police departments and multiple school and town charities. He was honored to be a board member of the
Connecticut Restaurant Association, Pan-Gregorian Association of Connecticut and proud to be a part of the Lyons Club, Rotary Club, and multiple Chambers of Commerce. The hard work and dedication of the Chip’s Team was never lost on George. He was forever grateful for their loyalty, dedication and teamwork. He was a mentor to many, always willing to give an opportunity to those that exhibited enthusiasm and ambition. He would often be found relaxing while listening to his Greek music. One of his favorite past times was dancing zeibekiko along with friends and family. He was many times the life of the party. He had a special appreciation for true friendship and cherished the time spent with his friends. He was happiest when his family and friends were enjoying life beside him. Visiting his homeland of Greece annually was something he was sure to make time for. His family and friends there looked forward to his visit since his arrival always brought the spirit of joy, fun, and feast to the village of Makrissia. While George enjoyed many pastimes, his pride and joy was spending time with his family, especially his nephews, AJ, Alex and Evan he referred to as “his boys” whom he treated like his own. Some of their best times were their drives to get ice cream or going out to dinner, just Uncle George and the boys. The Greek word “filotimo” captures the true essence of who George has always been. In the Greek language filotimo represents hospitality, pride, honor, integrity, respect, acts of kindness and unconditional love. George will be sorely missed by his family, friends and his Chip’s Team for all of these things and so much more. His legacy will live on through his loved ones forever.

Survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Pauline (Wallick) DeRosa; sons Paul (Brooke) and John DeRosa; daughters Pauline Fagan and Christine (Patrick) Noone; sisters Dolores English and Ann “Chick” Gargamelli; brother John DeRosa; grandchildren Sara, Ian, Tyler, Claire, and Julian Carmen; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Carmen, also known as ‘Tom’, and “Jun” (for Junior), served in the US Army and developed a lifelong passion while being stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. His overall manner and skillset were noted, therefore being tasked with caring for war pigeons. Weighing barely a pound, these extraordinary birds flew unwavering, carrying messages in and out of smoke, gas, exploding bombs and gunfire. He trained and handled “G.I. Joe”, a pigeon that ultimately received honorable distinction for saving the lives of over one-hundred Allied soldiers. Moreover, Tom was exclusively interviewed by Elizabeth Macalester, as she conducted research for her book “War Pigeons”, then ultimately invited to Washington, DC to accept the Medal of Honor on behalf of his partner, “G.I. Joe”. He married the love of his life, Pauline, on May 14, 1966, choosing his birthday as a fitting date to expand on what was one of the happiest and best days of his life. As his family grew, he founded the Westville Crest Plumbing & Heating company, enjoying many years of successful enterprise- a result of his hard work and dedication. Tom never met a stranger; he was a friend to all, always quick to offer a selfless and compassionate gesture. Whether a genuine handshake, a ride, an intent ear, a smile, a hug, a joke, or funny story- he was always there when one needed such. Of course, the greatest offering was that of his welcome and fried dough at home, joined by his four-legged best friend, Louie. A man led by his faith, Tom personified what he impressed upon his family, and for that, his life, love, and kindness will carry on through those he touched so deeply.

Fugal, Nancy Jean Canfield
Nancy Jean Canfield Fugal, age 70, of Milford, beloved wife of 30 years to the late Jan Peter Fugal, MD, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 22, 2022.
Nancy was born in Bridgeport on March 16, 1951 to the late Raymond Gray and Winifred Edna Doyle Canfield. A graduate of Jonathan Law High School Class of 1969, Nancy spent her life embracing many joyous moments and enduring challenging times. Nancy’s greatest joys were her husband, children, and grandchildren. She enjoyed vacationing every year in Alton Bay, New Hampshire, first with her own parents as a child, and then with her growing, blended family. Nancy was an avid reader and skillful writer, often sharing her book recommendations and thoughts with others. Hundreds of favorite books lined the shelves of her home, and her meticulous penmanship and crafty vocabulary were visible on research papers, personal letters, and holiday cards alike. Nancy had a child-like, silly side to her, in which her laughter was infectious. Nancy loved Christmas and making the holiday magical for those she loved and those in need, preparing numerous gifts for Jan to deliver on Christmas Eve to unsuspecting loved ones. She loved watching movies, sprawling out in front of a roaring fire in her stone fireplace, and latch-hooking in the living room, creating holiday decorations and ten personalized stockings for the fireplace. Nancy never turned down a delicious lobster roll or a bakery treat, and always loved cheering on her favorite teams, the Giants and Yankees. The thousands of pictures taken across seven decades tell the story of a beautiful, young woman who loved life, met a wonderful man who changed her world, created a beautiful family with memories to cherish, and endured far too many medical challenges that took its inevitable toll. Nancy has left a lasting impression on all those who knew her. The life lessons she taught directly, or that which were learned indirectly by watching her, will last a lifetime. Nancy is finally at peace now, rejoining loved ones who passed before, who were so terribly missed.
Nancy was also preceded in death by her daughters Ashlee Elisabeth Canfield Fugal and Sherri Lee Fugal Furce. Nancy leaves behind her sister Deborah Lynn Canfield O’Meara and her husband Frank of Orange, children Laurie Lynn Fugal Ott and her husband William of Milford, Howard Hugh Fugal and his wife Stephannie of West Greenwich, RI, Rebecca Jeanne Fugal Migliore and her husband John of Milford, Lisbeth Ane Fugal Greist and her husband Harold of Stratford, Edward Roy Fugal and his wife Patricia of Milford, Jan Peter Fugal II, DDS, and his wife Tabatha of Burnt Hills, NY, and Kurt Garrett Fugal and his wife Sherry of Guilford. She leaves behind twenty-two grandchildren: Olivia, Mackensie, and Ethan Ott; Gwynn and Aaron Fugal; Edwards and Hailey Greist; Christopher Piccoli, Christian, and Amber Furce; Danielle (Lukas) Bradley, Justin, and Jennafer Fugal; Tanner (Amber), Ashley (Justin) Bradshaw, Joshua, Cameron, and Liam Fugal; Tyler, Abigail, Nathan, and Lorren Fugal; and two great-grandchildren: Madilyn and Benjamin Bradley. She is also survived by son-in-law Robert Joseph Furce, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, fourteen nieces and nephews, many extended family members, and dear friends throughout the years.

Shields, Anne M.
Anne M. Shields, 83, lifelong resident of Milford, beloved wife of the late Robert W. Shields entered into eternal rest on February 4, 2022. Born on February 25, 1938 in New Haven, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Antoinette Milone.
Raised in West Haven, Anne was a graduate of West Haven High School, class of 1955, where she was an honors student, class officer and captain of the cheer squad. Throughout her youth, Anne was passionate with regard to education, in particular a love for reading, a passion that stayed with her throughout her life. Anywhere Anne ventured, her Kindle was in tow.
After high school, Anne enrolled in Southern Connecticut State University graduating with a teaching degree, thus beginning her journey as an educator in the Milford Public School system that spanned more than 30 years, where she inspired generations of young children to share her passion for learning. Considered by many to a “teacher’s” teacher, Anne, along with her husband Bob, also a career educator in the Milford school system, spent their lives dedicated to the pursuit of teaching and inspiring the students of Milford to dedicate themselves to learn while always exemplifying the highest degrees of character. During her teaching career, she was able to touch the lives of elementary school students at Pumpkin Delight, Central Grammar and Meadowside schools until her retirement in 2000.
While her days were spent in the classroom, her afternoons and evenings were primarily spent on the bleachers watching her three sons (Todd, Robert & Craig) play little league, junior football, high school and college sports. Home or away, Anne was sitting in the bleachers, you could always find Anne in the crowd, not because she cheered the loudest but because she was the mother with one eye on her sons playing and the other focused while writing in her lesson plans for tomorrows class. We wouldn’t have wanted it any other way as those lesson plans became classroom learnings that her students would remember for years and to this day, remind hers sons wherever they meet at a restaurant, store or a gas station as to a special topic or moment that they recollect from her class 20-30 years prior. We are so proud and filled with joy when we hear “your mother was my favorite teacher”.
As respected and admired as a teacher earning many accolades and awards, Anne was first and foremost a Mother and a Grandmother, nothing could ever supplant that as her legacy. Family was everything to her and she treasured every moment and every opportunity to be with together. Summers in Boothbay Harbor, late June visits to Martha’s Vineyard, ski weeks in Vermont are forever imprinted in our memories along with her famous themed summer picnics including a memorable July 4 making her nephew dress as the Statue of Liberty. Anne’s Thanksgiving poems, crazy love of pewter, hour’s long phone calls and her love for the American flag will always be remembered as pure Anne. For many of us, we will always remember her handwritten notes and cards always closing with an “I love you” with a stick figure of herself holding balloons. For many of us that will be the Mom and Grandma we will miss the most.
Anne is survived by her children, Todd (Sharon) Shields, Robert Shields and his longtime partner Sue, Craig (Maria) Shields, grandchildren, Mark, Marissa, Morgan. Riley, Lauren, Luke, Alexis, Cameron and Chloe, Sister Elaine Strogie, Brother Frank (Gwen) Milone, many nieces and nephews, extended family, friends and former students. Anne was predeceased by her loving husband Bob in 2014.
The family would like to thank the staff of U.S. Renal care at their Orange and Branford locations for the love and care provided to Anne for the past nine years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary Church, 70 Gulf Street, Milford (MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH). Interment will take place at a later date at Kings Highway Cemetery, Milford CT.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Robert and Anne Shields” Scholarship fund c/o Joseph A. Foran High School, 80 Foran Road, Milford CT 06460.
Simmat, Barbara
It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of my Mom, Barbara Simmat, on January 28th in our home with me and our cats, Cooper and Tucker, by her side.
Mom was born Mary Barbara Heilig in Reading PA on October 29, 1930 to Russell and Mary Willson Heilig. She grew up in Reading later living in New Jersey, Massachusetts and ultimately settling in Milford in 1964.
In 1973 Mom was working temp jobs when she accepted an assignment at BIC Pen. That temporary assignment turned into a 20 year career at BIC. One day she was summoned to Bruno Bich’s office. She was so afraid. What did she do that would cause her to be called to Bruno’s office? As it turned out he had heard that we had an extra bedroom and he was looking for a room and board situation for a French student coming for the summer to intern at BIC. Money was tight so she thought why not, plus it would be fun. Fun it was for she hosted many more interns over the years, traveled to France several times and developed long lasting friendships.
Mom also loved Italy, traveling to Rome, Venice, the Marche Region and the Amalfi Coast. It was in Rome where we had the infamous accident when our taxi t-boned another car and Mom broke her arm. Thankfully our friend Neva and her husband Rich came to the ER where Neva translated and Rich kept me company while Mom got her arm set. She came home with a big cast signed by the hospital staff.
Mom was a tireless advocate for insurance coverage for TMJ. She worked with Jim Amman in the CT legislature to require coverage and was president of the CT TMJ association. She traveled to Washington to meet with members of Congress and the NIH to discuss issues related to the recall of the implants in her jaw.
In her later years Mom struggled with COPD and macular degeneration but still enjoyed weekly lunches at Jeffrey’s and Rainbow Gardens as well as times with friends.
Mom and I are lucky to have the best friends who are our family. Thank you to everyone for the many years of fun and friendship. She and I have been so blessed to have your support, especially as her journey was ending.
A special thanks to her aide Juana for being our angel for the last 18 months. During this time Juana has become family. Also, Nurse Sandy who has been there for Mom and has provided comfort and guidance to me. And finally Sandra and the staff at Compassus who have provided Mom with exceptional care. We have known Nurse Sandra for many years going back to her pre nursing days as a waitress at Jeffrey’s. She has been both nurse and friend to Mom.
As she requested there will be no wake or funeral but instead ask that she be cremated, buried in Milford Cemetery and there be a celebration of her life.
Let’s raise a toast to a life well lived now and at a celebration when Covid and the weather allow.
Please note that many flowers/plants are toxic to the cats so I am not able to have them in the house. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name can be made to Halfway Home Rescue the place where we adopted Cooper and Tucker.

Smith, Walter “Bud”
Walter “Bud” Smith, 97, of Orange, beloved husband of the late Leontine “Lee” Smith, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 9, 2022. Born on December 27, 1924 in New Haven, he was the son of the late Walter H. and Adeline Smith and brother to the late Jane Wilcox. Bud grew up in Westville and was a graduate of Hillhouse High School. Facing the spectre of WWII, Bud enlisted in the United States Army at age 18 before he was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He was liberated in Spring of 1945 and returned home to his family in Connecticut. Following his return, he attained his B.S in Engineering at the University of Connecticut.
After college, he began his lifelong business endeavor with his father in what would become Orange Hills Country Club, in Orange. With a group of 6 men, a bulldozer, and his handy crowbar, Bud cleared & built the back 9 holes at the golf course over 7 years. During the golf season he was a constant presence at the course, whether picking rocks in the fairway, setting up golf matches, or socializing with golfers in the clubhouse. Walter had a way of making golfers and employees alike feel like family, and he remained passionate for and actively involved in the family business up until the last days of his life. He was a proud member of the Wooster Lodge No. 79 A.F. & A.M, a Life Member of the CT Superintendents Association, and he was inducted into the CT State Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2000 for his Service to Golf.
Bud’s passion for and avid support of local sports teams started at age 8, when he and his friends snuck into a Yale Football game with a fake mascot bulldog (an imposter Handsome Dan). This began a lifelong tradition of attending and organizing tailgates for friends & family at the Yale football games. Later in life, UCONN basketball became another fixture of Bud’s – hardly a Lady Huskies’ basketball game transpired without his focused attention and play-by-play commentary.
More than anything, Walter loved and cherished spending time with all his family, and friends that he considered family. He is survived by his two children, son Jud W. and daughter Judith A. Smith, both of Orange; his 4 grandchildren Justin P. Morgan, Jennifer L. and spouse Katelin V. Morgan-Kohl, Rebecca S. Morgan, and Staci Baranchak; and his nephew John J. and spouse Lynn-Ann McGrail. Subbloie, Albert R. Sr.
Albert “Al” R. Subbloie, 96, of Orange, beloved husband of the late Mary Theresa Passariello Subbloie, joined his heavenly family on January 28, 2022. Al was born on December 23, 1925 to the late Mary (Affinito) and Anthony Subbloie. He grew up in West Haven and worked at White Motors as a truck mechanic. Al served in the military, after which he went on to become a successful carpenter and building contractor.
For over 50 years, Al built, remodeled and worked on many homes in the town of Orange as well as surrounding towns. He was a craftsman and perfectionist. He was known for his ability to create anything out of a piece of wood. Whatever he built was solid and lasted forever. He was trusted by so many to design, build, fix or create anything they wanted, from a tiny birdhouse to a custom-built home. He built an amazing reputation on being creative, precise, reliable, and responsive, and he took pride in his creations. Al continued to build custom things for his friends and family until he was in his early 90’s with the same precision and craftsmanship as he always had in previous years.
Although designing, building and creating were his passion, Al also loved to hunt and snowmobile. He loved the outdoors, whether he was working outside or hunting with his bow and arrow. Trips to Vermont to hunt over the years became trips to Vermont to snowmobile. Some of the highlights in his 60’s and 70’s included a number of trips with family and friends to Yellowstone Park, where he enjoyed snowmobiling within the Park to visit Old Faithful, along with viewing buffalo, wolf, and elk, followed by deep powder riding in the surrounding high mountain peaks. Al also enjoyed sports and played baseball and softball. There was no limit to what Al could do at almost any age. He was even seen as recently as 3 years ago driving the same green 1973 GMC Sierra Truck, now 50 years old, around town serving his friends and customers.
Al was married to his loving wife, Mary, in June, 1952 at Holy Infant Church. He built their first home in Orange on Dogburn Lane in 1955 and then they moved to Alpom Drive in 1962, where he built their second home, which is where he resided until his passing.
Al is survived by his daughter, Linda, his son, Albert, Jr. and his partner, Jacqueline Barbara. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Natalie Subbloie and Marcus Barbara, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family extends their deepest gratitude and appreciation to Al’s caregiver, Fatima Posmao, for the exceptional attention, care and love she gave to him. Gregory Thomas Varga, 53, of Milford, passed away on January 21, 2022. Born on March 26, 1968 in Bridgeport, he was the son of Ann Varga and the late Steve Varga.
Gregory loved three things in his life, his family, Darla and cars. His kids were first on his list. Everyone knows that Greg would do anything he can to make his kids happy and get them involved in whatever they wanted to do. His second love was his girlfriend whom he did everything with. He had the only job we all knew him by, working at Wanye’s Auto Body, a place where you could always find him. His days never stopped there, especially on those long Friday nights at Stafford Motor Speedway making sure the #10 Wayne’s Auto Body car was perfect and ready. He took pride in every car he worked on, and he would work on anybody’s car. You call him about your car, he would ask “what did you break now?” He wanted everyone safe in the cars he worked on. If you know Greg, you know his love for MOPAR, Dodge, Plymouth. Those are the cars he enjoyed the most and he was always the MOPAR guy.
Along with his mom, Greg also leaves behind his beloved children, Dylan Varga and Katelynn Varga; brothers, Steven Varga, Gary Varga, and Alan Varga; nephews, Michael (Vanessa) Varga and Daniel (Jessica) Varga; great nephew, Rolan Varga, adoring partner, Darla Lenihan; and many great friends. He was predeceased by his father, Steve Varga; brother, Jeffrey Varga; sister-in-law, Sharon Varga.
Family and friends may gather on Sunday, January 30, 2022 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT. Burial will be private.
