Rosalie is survived by her children, James (Carysue) Attardo, Pauline (Paul) D’Orsi, and Christopher Attardo (fiancé Kelly Heider); grandchildren, Trevor Hudak, Julie Ann Dicine, and Katie Lynn Dicine; her late sister’s daughters, Kimberly Mucherino and Michele Mucherino and her daughter, Nicole Terrell; as well cousins and many more cherished nieces & nephews, extended family, and friends. She was predeceased by her son, Joseph Attardo Jr.; former husband, Joseph Attardo Sr.; and siblings, Constance Mucherino and Carmen James Marino.
As a young girl following moving to Milford from Waterbury, Rosalie attended and was a graduate of old Milford High School in 1957 where she established lifelong friendships. She was living at that time at the owners’ residence portion of the Shoreline Motel, which her father, a builder in Milford, built, and her mother operated. She later married and had four children and lived on Pauline Street, which was named after her mother, having been built by her family. She was very special person with a great sense of humor, was very compassionate and had tremendous inner strength & fortitude. She loved many and was loved by all who knew her. She was very loving towards her children and grandchildren, and this was extended to their friends, with her house always serving as the meeting & eating place for all their friends and the neighborhood kids, from Pauline Street to Minuteman Drive and finally at her house on Orange Avenue in Milford where she passed away at home. Although she held several jobs including at Kurt Volk and Curve Glass, she was primarily focused on her family which was very important to her and was the center of her life, she was the favorite aunt to all nieces and nephews. The other main pillar in her life was her faith, she valued her Church life very much. She was very religious, regularly attending mass at St. Mary’s until her declining health made that difficult. She nonetheless followed up with her joining Church Mass daily via TV and saying the Rosary daily and also regularly receiving visits from her Pastor to receive communion; she was devoted to the Church & loved Jesus Christ. She enjoyed many vacations with her family including to Lake George, Niagra Falls, Atlantic City, and Florida, where she had extended family as well. She loved football and was a big New York Giants fan! When the game was on you could be over her house, but you had to be quiet, or you were out! Likewise, she enjoyed playing cards and other games with her friends and children & grandchildren, but you had to follow the rules, or you were out! She enjoyed game shows, Blue Bloods, old movies and Hallmark movies. Rosalie was a fantastic cook passing on many of her cherished recipes to family & friends. She would not let you leave her house hungry, and her table was always open to all, and her great legendary meals & gatherings will be missed but always remembered. She had a huge impact on those around her and inasmuch as they continue to impact others she lives on in & thru them. Her memory will forever be cherished.

Dorothy J. (Kitlas) Doyle
Dorothy (Dottie) Doyle was born in Bridgeport, CT in 1924 to Marian Gemza and Joseph Kitlas. Attending St. Michael’s school in Bridgeport, Dottie developed an active imagination and a talent for making friends, something that would serve her well in life. At a time when most were under significant economic strain, her mother worked tirelessly to build a thriving bar and grill called the Bon Ton, while providing Dottie and her sister, Florence (Allard), with unwavering love, support, and encouragement at home.
Dottie attended Bassick High School where she made lifelong friends who turned into a weekly meeting of the “the bridge club” for the next 50 years. We fondly remember the living room re-arranged to accommodate three card tables and the room filled with laughing ladies in animated conversation under a light pall of cigarette smoke. After Bassick our mother attended Weylister Secretarial College in Milford and trained as a Medical Record Librarian. She first worked at St Vincent’s Hospital, which was all she had hoped – glamourous, exciting, and demanding, followed by Milford Hospital where she became the first Tumor Clinic Secretary. Unfortunately, her career didn’t last long for she soon met Gregory F. Doyle, also of Bridgeport, and was immediately smitten. Given that Gregory was six years her senior, she tried her best to appear sophisticated and mature by ordering a fancy cocktail and lighting up a cigarette on their first date. The relationship almost ended before it began as Greg disapproved of both vices. Fortunately, her kindhearted nature, genuine ability to connect, and her dancing skills left Gregory captivated, such that both realized that neither needed to put on airs. They were married for 59 years.
Once married, Dottie urged Greg to enter the funeral business. After attending embalming school, they moved to Lynchburg Virginia with their first child (Gregory). Living so far away from family became an ever-increasing burden and soon they were headed back North to see if they could make a go of it on their own. They opened the Gregory F. Doyle Funeral Home in 1951. In the spirit of partnership, Dorothy soon became one of Connecticut’s first female Funeral Directors assisting her husband while raising a family that would soon grow to five. With the support of family, she raised five children, led funerals and joined every women’s civic organization in the area. Driven by kindness and purpose, coupled with a desire to help those in need, she eventually became president of every organization she joined including the Ladies Auxiliary of Milford Hospital, the Lady Lions, and St. Ann’s Guild. In addition, Dottie was an active participant in the Legion of Christ.
Our mother’s altruistic nature was an integral part of our lives: as children we were regularly brought into area nursing homes to “visit those without family”, and every holiday we had at least one person around our table who would otherwise have been alone. Though driven by faith, our mother possessed the unique ability to adapt, take in new information and grow at every stage of her life. In her 30’s she attended parenting courses; in her 40’s she learned Transcendental Meditation; her 50’s saw her become part of the first Bereavement team in the US’s first free-standing hospice in Branford; in her 60’s she took up golf; her 70’s saw her go to a gym and work with a personal trainer; in her late 80’s she travelled solo on a cruise ship to Europe and in her 90’s she discovered Tai Chi.
The most enduring legacy our mother left was her overwhelming sense of gratitude and appreciation. While losses piled up, as they do for everyone in advanced age, she remained philosophical. Rather than lamenting she would say “It’s another time”. At the end of her life, it was this gift that endeared her to her two carers, Teresea and Yadja, and also to the staff at Carlton Rehab and Bridgeport Hospital where she referred to all as “angels”.
Our mother will be greatly missed, and though we are sad we withhold tears on her orders for as she often said she had had the most wonderful life one could ever expect, filled with awe and wonder. “What more can I want?” she would ask us, quite sincerely.
In the end, Dottie was hesitant to leave this earth, but her vibrant Catholic faith and belief that she would once again see her daughter Colleen and her husband Greg in heaven provided solace. Despite being predeceased by her beloved Colleen, Dottie leaves behind a large and loving family. Her surviving children include Greg and his wife Susan Coan in Leyden Mass; son-in-law William Britt along with Kiley, Adam, and Moriah Doyle Monsif; Conan and his wife Mary Kate Halpin and their children Jack and Lorena in Dublin, Ireland; Dody in Lasdon, South Carolina and her children Devin and Adrienne; and “her baby” Kerry in Somerville, Mass. As a final gift towards the end of her life Dottie was blessed with six great-grandchildren, the eldest of whom are old enough to miss their dear Grandmama.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday, December 6th from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in THE GREGORY F. DOYLE FUNERAL HOME, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 7th at 10:30 a.m. DIRECTLY in Saint Ann Church (Saint Raphael Parish), 501 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford. Interment will follow in Saint Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Donations may be made to CT Hospice in Branford in Dottie’s name.

His career at Bridgeport Hospital lasted 46 years, until he retired at age 78, having been named employee of the year in 1996.
While living in Milford, Tom was active in the community, joining the Jaycees and being elected to the Planning & Zoning Board, in 1974 Governor Meskill appointed Tom to the board of the State Technical Colleges.
Tom was a pillar of Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church on the Green in Milford, taking a leadership position on the Church Foundation, replacing the slate roof and renovating the organ.
Having attended Keewaydin Camp in VT as a youth, Tom continued as a counselor and then attended over 35 years of post-camp reunions with his family. He loved sailing, canoeing, Friday Night Frolics, the companionship and visiting the Morgan Horse Farm.
Tom could always be counted on to have a camera with him, at every family event, holiday and vacation. He also used that camera to take photos of trains, especially the diesel and electric engines that pulled the train cars. Tom had an extensive inventory of train engines, their numbers, locations, paint schemes and dragged his kids to train yards throughout New Haven on weekends. In the early days, it was not uncommon for Tom to be crossing tracks, waving at the train engineers and being welcomed into the cabin. Recently, his comprehensive collection of train books and hundreds of train magazines was donated to the Gateway Community College Library for use by the Railroad Technology students, where there is an annual scholarship in Tom and Barbara Ann’s name.
In addition to his wife Barbara Ann, Tom is survived by his children Thomas Jr. (Edward Bottomley), Susan O’Shea (Thomas O’Shea) and Christine “Missy” Hackett (Eric Hackett). Tom will also be missed by his grandchildren, Erin O’Shea, Brian Taylor and Joshua Hackett. Thomas was predeceased by his brothers Henry Little Griggs Jr. and Edward Aiken Griggs.
Tom was widowed in 2008 and was married to Barbara Ann in 2014 enjoying a new family that included 7 grandchildren, family trips to Matinicus Island and vacations with Barbara Ann. As usual, he was never seen without a special dog in his arms.

Annette Theresa Lessard
Annette T. Lessard, 92, of Milford (previously of Springdale/Stamford), beloved wife of the late Robert J. Lessard, passed away on December 18, 2023. Born on March 5, 1931, in Laconia, New Hampshire, she was the youngest of six children born to the late Leonelle and Almande (Lavoie) Cartier.
Annette Cartier met Bob Lessard when they were both working at a regional hospital in New Hampshire. Married in 1949 at the age of 18 and 22, they began their life there. They moved to Stamford, CT and in 1961, made Springdale their family home. In 2003, Annette moved to Milford. She lived on her own until this past May, moving to her new home, Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton.
In Springdale, Annette was very active with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department celebrating St. Patrick’s Day (feeding hundreds with corned beef and cabbage), Christmas (Santa arriving via fire truck to see 100 excited children), and New Years’ Eve (where balloons would fall from the ceiling as everyone cut it up on the dance floor). She loved any Danielle Steel book, every sunset at a beach, and a nice walk whenever and wherever possible. Her walks with her husband were always her hand in his until Bob passed in 1986. Now she can wrap him in her arms once again.
Annette, known to some as Mommy and to others as Mere-Mere, was the most humble and loving person in all the lives that she touched. Raising five boys is no easy task, but she excelled at it. Devoted to her children, family, and friends – she always rallied to get everyone together to share a meal, tear up the dance floor, or simply have a cup of coffee in the morning or tea in the evening. As the grandchildren grew up, she was there to watch a baseball game, a karate class, observe a dance recital, play catch in the backyard, or read a story to whomever was sitting in her lap. She was of modest taste and simple style, but always looked like a million dollars. Her smile was worth two million.
Annette will be truly missed by her loving children, Robert (Darlene), Mark (Debbie), Brian (Nancy), Paul (Lisa) and daughter in law Niki. Annette also leaves behind her adoring grandchildren, Robert (Sarah), Christopher (Emily), Matthew, Stephen, Timothy, Jessica (Tim), Kaitlin (Steve), Emily (Jon), Alec (Caitlin), Grace (Paul), Anne and Nicole. Annette also leaves behind her most precious great grandchildren Sophie, Claire, Cameron, Cash, Ginny, and Natalie. In addition, Andrew and Alyssa Rosen held an incredibly special place in Mere-Meres heart. Annette was predeceased by her son Michael, her granddaughter Tina, and siblings, Louise Triantafilu, Rita Paquette, Henry Cartier, Rudolph Cartier, and Robert Cartier.
The Lessard family would like to add a special thank you to the aide and nursing staff of Bishop Wicke Health Center. Their dedication to ensuring Mere-Mere was healthy, comfortable, freshly manicured, and well taken care of will be fondly remembered.

Helen Irene Rusanowsky
Helen Irene Solomon Rusanowsky passed away on December 23, 2023 in Milford, CT. She was born to
Herman Adolph Solomon and Helen Mary Rindos Solomon in Teaneck, New Jersey on August 29, 1932.
She lived in Bergenfield, Little Ferry, and East Patterson New Jersey and would visit her grandfather’s
farm in Milford during summers.
When 6 years old, Helen accompanied her mother and brother on a
trip around the corner to buy some milk at the Rusanowsky farm on Wolf Harbor Road. Ever vigilant,
Helen noticed two boys playing on the front porch and went to investigate. Four-year-old Daniel and his
older brother Paul invited her to join them to play with a windup train. Little did she know, then, that
she was destined to marry that boy Daniel in 1958 and they would have five children.
Helen went to Lodi High School in New Jersey and would do the morning announcements and lead the
school in a morning prayer, even greeting the mayor of Rome when he visited. Since French was their
only common language Helen was able to bridge the communication gap, to his delight, and in all
likelihood, the relief of the school’s principal. A lifelong learner, Helen graduated from Montclair State
Teacher’s College with a Bachelor’s degree (English major, science minor, and a teaching certificate) and
later a Master’s degree in English. Her final academic benchmark as a student was earning a sixth-year
degree in Educational Technology from Fairfield University. For the bulk of her 35-year career, Helen
taught 7 th and 8 th grade English, first in New Jersey and then at Milford’s Lenox Avenue and Kay Avenue
Schools (now West Shore Middle School).
Helen lived a full life in her 91 years enjoying her children, grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several
generations of students who fondly called her “Mrs. R”. An active member of Christ the Redeemer
Church, Helen served in various capacities on church boards and leadership opportunities, was active in
the Boy Scouts of America and worked the polls for the Republican Party for many years. Many will
remember her service as a Red Cross volunteer, especially at local blood banks. Helen’s love of all things
Milford was reflected in her strong record of community service for the Milford Land Trust and other
organizations, and her longtime service was recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution’s
Excellence in Community Service award. She was known for many creative pursuits, and leaves a legacy
of paintings, afghans, sweaters, quilts and some intricate stitchery projects that will be treasured.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, aunts and uncles, and daughter Michele. She is survived by her
husband of 65 years Daniel; children Diane, Daniel (Karen), Mark, and Michael; grandchildren Samantha
(Alex) Hoffman and Steven Graham Scollon; great-grandchild Theodore Hoffman; her brother Herman J.
Solomon. Jr.; cousin Dorothy Kahl Kozlowski; several other relatives from the extended Rindos family
and her dear nieces and nephews from the Rusanowsky family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Friday December 29, 2023 at Christ the Redeemer Church in Milford. Visitation will be earlier in the morning from 9:00am-10:30am at the GREGORY F. DOYLE FUNERAL HOME, 291 Bridgeport Ave., Milford. Burial in Kings Highway Cemetery, Milford will follow Mass.

Marietta “Mary” Schembari
Yes, her name was really Marietta, a song-like mouthful that she never used except on official documents, like this obituary. Marietta, 98 (that’s not a typo), a seven-decade resident of Milford, died on December 24, 2023 at Milford Hospital after a brief illness.
Mary was born in Plains, Pa., on September 17, 1925 to Enrico and Filomena Balestrini and graduated from Sunbury High School, where she played in the marching band, in 1943. While many of the girls in her class took homemaking classes, Mary signed up for welding, so when she then followed her beloved older sister and best friend Josephine to Connecticut, Mary was snapped up by Chance Vought to weld a part on the wing of the Marine fighter-bomber F4U Corsair. It was the plane flown by “Pappy” Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. As her grandson Joseph said, her building planes that helped win the war was bada–. You can read about her Corsair exploits in Mary’s exhibit at the Connecticut Air and Space Center in Stratford.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana Dunna of Milford, who cared for her mother the last few years, allowing Mary to realize her wish to remain In her home as her mobility declined; her son, Jim, and his wife, Christine Negroni of Old Greenwich; granddaughter, Marian Schembari, her husband, Elliot Speed, and daughter, June Schembari of Oregon; grandson Antonio Schembari and his wife, Dr. Jenae Linville of Arizona; grandson Samuel Schembari of Michigan; grandson Joseph Schembari of Michigan; goddaughters Kathryn Balestrini and Janet Sanders, both of Milford; and several special nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by Jimmy, her heart-throb husband. Together they ran the Beach Dry Cleaners, near St. Gabriel Church in Milford, where she was the seamstress. Somewhere in the back of an old gent’s closet must still hang a pair of trousers that she had to let out; by nine siblings, more Balestrinis that you can shake a stick at; and her son-in-law and best buddy, Craig Dunna.
Although churning out Corsairs and helping to run a small business were major accomplishments, Mary was also a magician in the kitchen. The extraordinary Italian dinners she would produce fed the boisterous extended family that worked in the defense factories and fought in some of the major battles of the war that historians are still writing about. Harry was at Guadalcanal, Jim was in D-Day, Angelo was in Italy, Leo was a paratrooper who helped relieve Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge, and her husband proudly rode a battleship salvaged from Pearl Harbor into Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender. You can applaud now.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on December 28, 2023 at St. Gabriel Church, 26 Broadway, Milford, at 11 a.m. There will be no calling hours and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the charity of your choice.

Thomas D. Ward
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Thomas (“Tom”) Ward, 70, of Milford, Connecticut beloved husband of Pamela (Slavin) Ward. Tom passed away on December 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 22, 1953, in the Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late John and Gloria (Lyons) Ward. Tom was a member of a large, vibrant family, as one of nine Ward siblings who found his lifelong home in Milford.
A graduate of Jonathan Law High School, he carried his passion for baseball from his youth into his college years at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where he played alongside his oldest brother, John while earning a degree in physical education. Upon graduation, Tom returned to Connecticut and received his certification in industrial arts from CCSU followed by a 6th year in education from SCSU.
Tom’s commitment to education and youth shone through his 32-year career as a dedicated middle school teacher in Stamford, CT. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, impacting generations of students with his wisdom and kindness.
Marriage to his beloved wife, Pam, marked the beginning of a beautiful journey of 40 years, filled with love, adventure, and shared dreams. Together, they traveled the world, from the pink sands of Bermuda to the rugged beauty of Ireland, the golf courses of Pebble Beach and Scottsdale, and the captivating sights of Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.
As a father, Tom’s greatest pride and joy were his sons, Kevin (35) and Brian (32). He instilled in them the values of family and the joy of shared experiences. The family’s annual vacations to places like Yellowstone, Disney, Toronto, Williamsburg, and Cape Cod were cherished memories, with Tom always ensuring that a set of golf clubs was part of the journey.
Tom’s passion for sports was a significant aspect of his life, especially in supporting his sons’ athletic pursuits. He spent countless hours on the sidelines of Race Brook and Grassy Hill Country Clubs, watching Kevin master the game of golf. Tom’s pride was unmistakable as he observed Kevin’s precision and skill on the golf course, culminating in their triumphant win at the Grassy Hill Country Club member-member tournament, a cherished memory that Tom often recounted with great fondness.
Similarly, Tom’s dedication to Brian’s baseball career was unwavering. From the early days at the Milford International League, where Tom coached with enthusiasm and pride, to watching Brian pitch for Foran High School, UCONN, and the Cape Cod Baseball League, Tom was a constant figure in the stands. His presence at Brian’s games, following every pitch, celebrating each victory, and being there for any defeat, were a testament to his unconditional support and love.
Tom’s love for sports extended to being an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, sharing the thrill of every Patriots Super Bowl with his sons by his side.
In recent years, Tom found a second family at The Orchards Golf Course, where he combined his love for the game with the camaraderie of friends and co-workers. He adored his time there and never missed an opportunity to fit in a round.
Tom was so happy to see his sons meet their life partners and be married in the recent years. He adored Brian’s wife, Sarah, and Kevin’s wife, Caitlin. Often telling friends and family how happy they both made him. Tom was also so grateful to be a grandfather to Kevin and Caitlin’s children, Nora Kelly and Charles Thomas. He never missed an opportunity to spend time with them and noted that seeing the kids this past Thanksgiving made it one of the best days of his life.
Despite the joy and fulfillment in his life, Tom’s life was also a remarkable story of courage and perseverance. For nearly 30 years, he bravely battled a rare form of kidney cancer. His family is forever grateful to Dr. Richard Childs and the team at the National Institutes of Health for their exceptional care, which gave them precious additional years with Tom. His resilience in the face of adversity, unwavering faith, and trust in modern medicine were sources of inspiration to all. The family would also like to extend its deepest appreciation for the additional doctors, advanced practice providers, nurses and other staff who cared for Tom over the years. A very special thank you to the medical ICU staff at Yale New Haven Hospital for their compassionate attention during Tom’s most recent hospitalizations.
Tom Ward’s legacy is one of unyielding love, strength, and a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity. His memory will be forever cherished by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
