Peter D. Axten
Peter Daniel Axten, 74, of Milford, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Milford Hospital following a period of challenging health issues. He is now at rest, reunited with his parents Daniel and Irene Axten, and his sister Linda Axten.
Born on May 21, 1952, at Milford Hospital, Peter was a lifelong Milford resident with deep roots in the community. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, including a deployment in Germany during the Vietnam war. After his military service, he lived in San Diego for a time before returning to his hometown, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Peter was an All-American basketball player for the Milford Indians before attending Furman University and later the University of Connecticut, where he played on full scholarship for both men’s basketball teams. Years later, he shared his love of the game by coaching his son and daughter’s basketball team at St. Mary’s School.
In 1988, Peter built the family home where he and his former wife, Mary Lynn Axten, raised their children. The house was constructed using bricks salvaged from old Central Grammar School in Milford, a fitting tribute to the town that shaped his life. His connection to Milford stretched back generations. His father, Daniel Axten, operated a Christmas tree farm on North Street and owned Dan’s Bar & Grill downtown Milford, located where Stonebridge Restaurant now stands, giving Peter a life long connection to Milford’s history and it’s people.
As a young man, Peter worked at Milford Automatics for the Chernock family, who had been like a second family to him and remained among the most important and cherished people in his life. Peter then went on to work for Northeast Utilities, beginning at the nuclear power plants in Waterford, Norwalk, Milford, and Southington before becoming a lineman for Eversource. His work helped keep power flowing reliably throughout Connecticut and across parts of New England. He was known as a hardworking, dependable man who never hesitated to lend a hand to family, friends, or anyone in need.
A devoted Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Milford, Peter was known for his warm smile, quick wit, adventurous and generous spirit, and unwavering integrity. He carried himself with quiet class and was often seen wearing a pastel button down shirt, crisp khakis, and a leather jacket, with the familiar scent of Davidoff Cool Water cologne. Peter had a playful sense of humor and was always joking around, whether teasing family and friends, pulling an innocent prank, or finding a way to make everyone around him laugh. He relished sharing jokes and puns, singing to Dean Martin, watching basketball and football, and enjoying documentaries and films about history. Peter was a proud member of the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Society, where he celebrated his Polish heritage alongside family and fellow members. Some of his happiest moments in recent years were spent on the back patio of the home he shared with his dedicated loving partner, Catherine, enjoying good food, drinks, laughter, and the company of family and friends. Above all, he valued family, loyalty, and tradition, and could always be counted on by those he loved.
Peter is survived by his son, Daniel Axten and wife Gabriella Axten; his daughter, Katelyn Axten; his sister, Virginia Lewis; and his devoted partner and love of his life, Catherine Crowley, along with her daughter, Katelyn, son’s Kevin, Ryan and Mathew and six grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly and cherished spending time with.

Louise Barbieri
Louise Ann Barbieri, 81, of Milford passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on July 26, 2026. Born on March 27, 1945 in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Bertrum and Margaret Catherine (Sullivan) Hantke.
Raised in Arlington, Virginia, Louise graduated from Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, and continued her education at Annhurst College earning a bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
She was soon married and dedicated her life to being a stay at home Mom. She raised three wonderful and bright children who because of her constant loving attention and devotion went on to graduate from college and graduate school and now have families of their own. She helped in the building of her own home that she lived in for the past 54 years.
She was very active with St. Mary’s School, sending all three of her children there. She volunteered at the school assisting the teachers whenever she could. She donated the funds to erect the school flag pole and books for the library. Along with the school principal, she established the St. Mary’s Preschool in the late 80’s. The preschool has become very successful.
She attended all of her children’s` sporting events throughout the years from grade school to college. She took great pleasure in watching Jeopardy and in doing crossword puzzles.
A dedicated Yankees fan, she rarely missed the chance to cheer on her favorite team. Later in life Louise found her greatest peace on the back porch of her home in her rocking chair where she enjoyed countless quiet moments watching the squirrels, birds of all kind, deer, mother and fawn, turkeys, occasional coyotes and even saw a black bear. She also had a special place in her heart for cats and dogs.
Louise will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her kind heart, and the joy she found in life’s simple moments. A loving mother, and a proud grandmother, she cherished her children and grandchildren above all else and celebrated each of their accomplishments with immense pride. They brought her endless happiness and joy.
Her warmth, devotion, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Louise is survived by William G. Barbieri of 57 years; her children William Lawrence (Debra) Barbieri, Dr. Elizabeth Anne (Alexis Hult) Barbieri, and Margaret Joan (Kishore) Bagga; her grandchildren, Jake, Maya, Enzo, Marco, Leo, Harrison, Grant, and Lilly; her sisters, Barbara Bright and Patricia Wellde; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family. Louise was predeceased by her brother, Bruce Hantke.
A graveside service will be celebrated on Friday, July 31, 2026 at 10:00 am at Saint Mary Cemetery, Buckingham Avenue, Milford, CT (MEET DIRECTLY AT THE CEMETERY)

Violet M. Battalino
Violet May Battalino, beloved matriarch and cherished member of the community, peacefully passed away at her home, surrounded by the love of her family, on July 6, 2026. Born May 11, 1929, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Violet’s life was a testament to kindness, devotion, and the boundless love she shared with her family and community.
The daughter of Delia Gilbride and Franklin (Frank) LaSella, Violet was raised in a household that valued family above all else, a tradition she carried throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, her husband, Thomas R. Battalino, whom she married on September 3, 1949, and her siblings Frank LaSella, John LaSella, Joan LaSella, and Agnes Blankshen. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she was also predeceased by her dear sons-in-law, William (Bill) Piccolo and Joseph Russell, Jr.
Violet’s surviving family includes her devoted children: Joan Piccolo, Debra Dunn and her husband Charles, Laura Russell, and Thomas Battalino, Jr., along with his wife Debra. She was the proud grandmother to eleven grandchildren: Christopher Piccolo, William (Billy) Battalino, Brian Piccolo, Kristin Brice and her husband Joseph, Kathleen Dunn, Peter Hidu, Jessica Piccolo, Colleen Harrak and her husband Matthew, Kyle Battalino, Nicole McArdell and her husband Ryan, and Julia Battalino. Her legacy of love extends to her great-grandchildren: Daniel Abbattelo and his wife Lex, Jonathan Gaudino-Piccolo, Hunter Brice, Alexander Harrak, Emily Harrak, Kayleen Hidu, Gianna Hidu, Benjamin Piccolo-Carmichael, and Oliver McArdell. Violet is also survived by her sister-in-law, Gail LaSella.
A graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School in Bridgeport, Violet was a dedicated employee at Alexanders Department Store, where she worked in bookkeeping until her well-deserved retirement. Her professional life was marked by diligence and attention to detail, qualities that she carried into her personal endeavors.
Violet was a longtime parishioner of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Milford, where her faith was a guiding force. She found joy and companionship at the Milford Senior Center, where she was a familiar face on Bingo Tuesdays. Her hobbies included baking an array of delightful cookies during the holidays, creating sweet memories that her family will cherish forever.
Those who knew Violet were touched by her kindness, a gentle spirit that left a positive impact on everyone she met. Her ability to forge connections and create lasting memories with her family and friends was truly remarkable.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her grandson Christopher Piccolo, whose dedication as Violet’s primary caregiver allowed her to spend her final days in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by love.
Violet Battalino’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, family, and faith. She will be deeply missed but her legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Barbara B. Boston
Barbara Bowman Boston, age 84, of Milford, formerly of Fairfield, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026. She was the wife of the late James W. Boston. Born on January 14, 1942, she was the daughter of the late James and Alice Kennedy Bowman.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Heather Boston Garbacik and husband, Edward, Sarah Boston Barker and husband, Alex, Rebecca Boston Dowd; and son-in-law, Robert Routhier. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Holly Boston Routhier; and son-in-law, Jim Dowd. She leaves her Baker’s Dozen of grandchildren. She will also be remembered by her brother, James Bowman; and sister-in-law, Jean Boston Fullen.

Barbara Regina Carangelo, 93, of Orange, CT, beloved wife of the late Robert Carangelo, Esq., passed away peacefully at her home on July 21st, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregivers.
Born on June 28th, 1933, in New Haven, CT, Barbara was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Lillian (Sagnella) Costantini. She lived a life devoted to her family, creating a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support that will be remembered by all who knew her.
She began her professional career as a legal secretary for Attorney Ullman, where her exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and dedication were quickly recognized. She later used those talents to help her husband with his legal practice. After raising her children, she became a real estate agent for the Raccio Agency, where her warmth, integrity and dedication made her a trusted advisor and friend to many clients. She loved helping families find their homes, and she took great pride in the relationships she built throughout her career.
Barbara is survived by her loving children: Robert James Carangelo, M.D., and his wife, Mary Carangelo; Lynn Santostefano and her husband, Dr. Michael Santostefano; Joan Amshel, PA-C, and her husband, Craig Amshel, M.D.; and John Carangelo, Esq., and his wife, Kathrine Carangelo. She was the proud and devoted grandmother of nine grandchildren: Sydney and her partner, Will; Christopher; Haley; David; Evan; Grace; Michael; Joseph; and Raquel. Her family was the center of her life, and she took great joy in celebrating their accomplishments and milestones.
A Celebration of Life gathering, open to the public, will be held on Saturday, August 29th at Orange Congregational Church, 205 Meetinghouse Lane, Orange, CT 06477 at a time to be determined. Private burial services will be held for the family. Barbara will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Orange Center Cemetery in Orange, CT. Dolores M. Christie, 90, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Brainard Christie, passed away on July 29, 2026 in her home. Born on May 20, 1936 in Bridgeport, CT, she was the daughter of the late Gloria (Pearson) Hammer.
Dolores is survived by her children, Diane Christie, Susan Liseo (Gary), James Christie,

Elaine Clifford
Devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Elaine Parise Clifford passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 88.
Elaine was born on April 22, 1938, in New Haven, Connecticut, to the late Dominic and Mary (Scalabrino) Parise. She lost her mother at a young age but was fortunate her aunt Florence Parise stepped in as a significant figure in her life. From an early age, her remarkable intelligence was evident. Academically gifted, she skipped two grades and excelled throughout her education. After graduating, she began a career in the insurance industry, where her talent, dedication, and work ethic quickly earned her advancement.
Elaine married the love of her life, Daniel Clifford, and together they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage while raising their family in Orange, Connecticut. She made the heartfelt decision to leave her career to devote herself to raising their two sons, Daniel and Michael. She poured her heart into her family, volunteered at their schools, and created a warm, loving home filled with kindness, encouragement, and unwavering support.
As her sons grew older, Elaine returned to the insurance industry with Equitable Life, where she once again distinguished herself through her professionalism and success while working in both the Milford, Connecticut, and New York City offices.
While Elaine found great fulfillment in her successful career, nothing brought her more joy than the love she held for her family. Her sons were the light of her life, a source of immeasurable pride and devotion. She embraced her daughters-in-law, Catherine and Ruth, as her own from the moment they entered her life. Throughout every chapter of life, she remained a steadfast source of support, encouragement, and unconditional love.
As a grandmother, Elaine was simply extraordinary. Whether babysitting, attending recitals, cheering from the sidelines at games, or preparing home-cooked meals, she was always there. Family often joked that she was one of the world’s worst drivers, but that never stopped her from making the trip to visit her grandchildren, cook dinner, lend a helping hand, and remind everyone just how deeply they were loved. Her presence brought comfort, laughter, and a sense of home wherever she went.
Elaine leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary kindness, generosity of spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. She is survived by her sons, Daniel Clifford and his wife, Catherine, and Michael Clifford and his wife, Ruth; and by her cherished grandchildren, Meghan, Kevin, Julia, Emma, and Patrick, each of whom brought her immeasurable pride and happiness.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Daniel Clifford; her brother, Anthony Parise; and her sister, Constance Grenon.
Elaine’s love, wisdom, generosity, and steadfast devotion to her family will continue to live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In accordance with Elaine’s wishes, funeral services will be private and held with her immediate family. The family is grateful for the love, prayers, and support they have received during this difficult time.

Kathleen E. Cody
Kathleen Elizabeth Cody, 53, of Milford, CT, beloved wife of Michael Cody, passed away surrounded by her family on July 11, 2026. Born on July 24, 1972 in York, PA, she was the daughter of Dianna (Hoke) Falvey, and the late Dennis J. Falvey.
Kathleen graduated from York Catholic High School in 1990, followed by a bachelor’s degree in political science from York College.
In 1997, while vacationing with her family in Topsail Island, NC, one of her favorite places throughout her life, Kathleen was introduced to Michael, a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune. They met on a blind date at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball arranged by a mutual friend. The two went on to marry in 2000 and began a family with the arrival of Patrick in 2001 and Margaret in 2003. In 2004, Kathleen and family moved to Michael’s hometown of Milford, where she made many deep friendships and raised her family over the next two decades.
In 2009, Kathleen went back to school at St. Vincent’s College in Bridgeport, CT, to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and would go on to serve as an Intensive Care Unit nurse at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Kathleen also served in nursing administrative positions focused on quality improvement for patient outcomes at both St. Vincent’s and Yale-New Haven Hospital. During the 2020 Covid crisis, despite multiple years away from bed-side nursing, Kathleen volunteered to return to St. Vincent’s ICU to assist her nursing colleagues in caring for patients throughout this critical time.
Kathleen loved spending time with her family and friends, sitting at a bar and having dinner with her husband, afternoons at Bayview or Gulf Beach in the summer, trips to Topsail to enjoy the ocean, consistently developing and enhancing her wardrobe, or a simple quiet night at home.
Other than her loving husband of 26 years, Kathleen is survived by her children, Patrick and Margaret Cody, and labrador retriever Fife; her mother, Dianna Falvey; her siblings, Matthew Falvey, Sarah Falvey, and Emily (Jeremy) Falvey-Smith; her mother and father in law, Kevin and Chrystine Cody; her nieces and nephews, Taylor (Ian) Zager, Amanda (Max) Haldeman and her grandniece, Denni, Seth (Sophie) Falvey, and Jeren Smith. Kathleen is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Peter M. Costello
Peter Myles Costello, age 94, beloved husband of the late Joan M. Costello, died on Wednesday July 29, 2026.
Peter was born in Manhattan, New York on January 3, 1932 to the late George and Veronica Kraft Costello. Peter graduated from the University of Vermont, where he met the love of his life Joan, and later earned his Doctorate Degree from Michigan State University. He became a professor of Economics and taught at Smith College, UCONN and retired from the University of Bridgeport. Peter was also a proud Army Veteran and served during the Korean War. He had a lifelong love of the ocean and sailing and was a master carpenter and boat builder.
Survivors include his children, Paul Costello and his wife Theresa of Milford and Kristen Costello and her husband Brian Smith of Evergreen, CO, five grandchildren, Peter and Michael Costello, Aaron and Dylan Smith, and Scott McCoy, as well as five great-grandchildren, Avery, Oliver, Elijah, Shine and Nathan. Purificacao F. Cristal
It is with immense sadness that the family of Purificacao Fernandes Cristal of Milford, CT announce her passing on July 16, 2026 due to complications from gastric cancer.
Loved wife of the late Antonio Dias Cristal, and mother of her late son, Eliseu (Lisa) Cristal, daughter, Julieta (J. Darrin) Smith, and son, John (Danica) Cristal. Grandmother (Vovo) to Ronan Smith. Dear sister to Lucinda Ferreira of Darien, CT and half-sister Ilda Preto of Portugal. Cao also had a number of other half-siblings in Brazil. She was Aunt and Grand Aunt to many nieces and nephews all over the world.
Cao, as she was known, was born to the late Francisca Fernandes of Constantim, a little village in the Northeast of Portugal in 1938. She lived a hard life as a young girl growing up only with a mother and a sister and being sent to live with an aunt and uncle for 10 years. At age 13, she took over the task of making the family bread every week – a job she took great pride in. She worked very hard as a farmer and sheep herder.
During this time, she was separated from her beloved sister, Lucinda, but the two frequently conspired to meet up with their animals in neighboring pastures so that they could spend time talking about their lives. They lived under the dictatorship of Salazar in Portugal who sympathized with Spain’s fascist regime under Franco. During this time, to get by, Cao sometimes smuggled coffee into Spain and was once apprehended and both her coffee, and profits from selling it, were taken by Spanish authorities. She was searched and had to walk 15 miles back home empty-handed.
She and her sister were separated again a few years later when her sister emigrated to Brazil and eventually, to the United States. They were reunited when her sister later petitioned for their mother (Francisca), Cao and her young family to come to Harrison, New York where they lived for 15 years.
Her life turned for the better at this time, and the family finally began to prosper. Cao worked as a talented seamstress and her husband worked as a skillful carpenter and stone mason, eventually with his own business as a contractor. They saved, invested and educated two of their children with college educations and the third eventually became a business owner.
Cao and Antonio retired in the early 1990s and moved back to Portugal. It was to be short-lived, as her husband passed away only five years later. Once again, Cao returned to the United States. And with her sister having lost her husband as well, the two finally were able to live together for a few years as they helped care for both their mother Francisa (Chica) and Lucinda’s young granddaughters (Liliana and Lucy Cullen), enjoying many long walks for exercise and conversation together and living convivially.
Cao moved in with Julieta, her husband Jeffrey Darrin Smith, and her grandson after his birth. They moved from New Rochelle, New York to Milford, Connecticut in 2006, where she has lived since with her daughter’s family. She celebrated the marriage of her youngest child, son John to Danica Wilhowy in 2018. She loved to garden. She was a talented crafter completing many beautiful and intricate pieces of traditional Portuguese crochet lace, making beautiful handknit sweaters for countless babies, sewing and cooking. Her family lived for her Thanksgiving meals, and many a happy occasion was celebrated in that house with her extended family. Christmas mornings, the family woke up to the fragrant smell of her rice pudding cooking in the kitchen.
In addition to all the people already named, Cao leaves behind countless friends and admirers who were always offered meals and often something from the garden to take home. She also will be remembered by Lucinda’s daughters, Cynthia Ferreira (Brian Cullen) and Sandra Ferreira, and her son, Sage Ferreira as well as her nephew, Paulo Raposo and his family in Portugal. She will be remembered by all with love and fondness. May she rest in peace.

John “Jack” Steven Dirgo
John “Jack” Steven Dirgo, 63, of Milford, passed away on July 18, 2026, after a courageous battle with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). Born on August 2, 1962, he was the son of Marge (Wasko) Dirgo and the late Edward Dirgo. Jack was known for his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and ability to make others laugh. He was the life of the party, always ready with a joke and a smile. A skilled carpenter for more than 40 years, Jack took great pride in his craftsmanship and earned the respect of all who knew his work. Above all, Jack was a devoted family man. He loved spending time with those he cherished most, was an exceptional cook, and built lasting friendships through his kindness, generosity, and genuine love for others.
In addition to his loving mother, Jack is survived by his significant other, Kathy “Kat” Blake; his son, Austin Dirgo and his partner, Liana Martin; his daughter, Madison Dirgo; his grandson, Tristan Dirgo; his sisters, Margaret Dirgo, Dawn Blalock (Victor), and Pat Jones (Jack); his nieces and nephews, Summer Long (Chris), Michelle Bates (Norman), and Eddie Dirgo; his great-nephew, Ryder Bates; his uncle, John Wasko; his cat, Schmedly; many cousins; and countless cherished friends. In addition to his father, Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Richie and Eddie Dirgo; his niece, Katie Jones; and his brother-in-law, Norman Francoeur.

Constantine P. Ellis
Constantine Ellis, 76, of Orange, beloved partner of 34 years to Chris Merolla, passed away on July 23, 2026. Born on January 24, 1950 in New Milford, he was the son of the late Peter and Margaret Ellis.
Constantine was a man who was loved by everyone and would make friends with anyone around. The family would like to thank everyone for the love, support, and condolences during this difficult time.
Along with his life partner, Chris, Constantine is survived by his son, Darren Ellis; his brother, Michael Ellis, as well as many other friends and family members.

Andrew M. Esposito, Jr.
Andrew was recently predeceased by the love of his life and devoted wife of 65 years, Judith Esposito. Together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and service to others.
He is survived by his loving children, Andrew (Danielle) Esposito of Ansonia, Christina (Philip) Krebs of Milford, and Jonathan (Karen) Esposito of Glastonbury. He was the proud and devoted grandfather of Jacqueline (Gregory) Kline, Samantha Esposito, Maxwell (Hannah) Krebs, Aubrey Krebs, Michael Esposito, Holly Lavigne, and Troy (Taylor) Lavigne, and the cherished great-grandfather of Peyton Judith Kline. Andrew was predeceased by his sister, Ann Louise Gaetano, and his brother, Peter David Esposito.
Andy was a graduate of Boston College and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp. before beginning a successful career as a business executive.
Andy and Judy moved to Woodbridge in 1965, where they raised their three children and became deeply rooted in the community they loved. In 1972, Andy joined a dedicated group of fathers in founding the Woodbridge Fathers Baseball League. He served as the league’s president and coached youth baseball for twelve years, helping shape the lives of countless young athletes.
A man of deep Catholic faith, Andy was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church for many decades. He faithfully served the parish as a Trustee for 26 years, a member of the Board of Finance for 27 years, and as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and catechism teacher. In 2008, Andy was the recipient of the St. Joseph Medal, given in recognition of his selfless service to his church by the Archdiocese of Hartford. His faith was the foundation of his life and guided his unwavering commitment to serving others.
His dedication to the Town of Woodbridge extended far beyond his church. Throughout the years, Andy generously volunteered his time on numerous boards, commissions, and committees, including the Inland Wetlands Commission, the Woodbridge Board of Finance, Woodbridge Ethics Committee, the Board of Police Commissioners, the Beecher Road School Building Committee, the Country Club of Woodbridge Golf Commission, proposal review committees for the Country Club property, the Beecher Road School HVAC Review Committee, and most recently, the Woodbridge Police Commission and Board of Ethics. He received the Living Treasure Award in 2021 in recognition of his decades long service to the Town of Woodbridge.
Andy was known for his integrity, humility, generosity, and quiet leadership. Whether coaching youth baseball, serving his church and community, or simply taking the time to encourage others, he lived a life of purpose and service. He mentored countless young people over the years, leading by example through his faith, character, and compassion. His guidance and encouragement left a lasting impact on many lives. Andy was also very proud of his Italian heritage. He was proud member and past president of the Amity Club.
Above all, Andy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, celebrating their accomplishments, and creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Andy will be remembered for his unwavering faith, quiet humility, generous spirit, and lifelong dedication to his family, his church, and the Town of Woodbridge. His legacy of service, compassion, and integrity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Teresa A. Fasanella
Teresa “Terri” Fasanella, a lifelong resident of Milford, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026 following a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Milford, Connecticut, on September 20, 1949, Teresa was the beloved daughter of the late August “Gus” Bartolotta and Teresa (Benefico) Bartolotta. She grew up in the community she loved, attended Jonathan Law High School, and later graduated from Southern Connecticut State University.
Terri dedicated many years of service to the State of Connecticut Department of Social Services, where she built a respected career before retiring as a state employee in 2017.
She found great joy in traveling, spending time at the beach, and attending Broadway shows with friends and family. Terri was also an active member of the Milford Senior Center, where she enjoyed the friendships and the sense of community it provided. She cherished every opportunity to make memories with those she loved and was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends.
Teresa was the devoted wife of James Fasanella. She was the loving mother of James Fasanella and his wife, Cathlyn, and Kristen Fasanella. She was the proud and adoring grandmother of Mackenzie, who brought immense joy to her life.
She is also survived by her loving siblings: Mike Bartolotta and his wife, Kathy, of West Haven; Anne Marie DeAngelo and her husband, Frank, of Northford; and her sister-in-law, Ardell Bartolotta. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph “Skip” Bartolotta.
Terri also leaves behind a large and loving family of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her kindness, warmth, and love.
Teresa will be remembered for her strength, gentle spirit, smile, and deep devotion to her family. Her courage, grace, and love will remain an enduring source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Linda Ann Gagel
Linda Gagel, age 76, of Orange, beloved wife of Charles Gagel, passed away on July 17th, 2026. Born on March 11th, 1950, in New Haven, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Frederich and Eleanor Sundermann.
A graduate of West Haven High’s Class of 1968, Linda went on to pursue her passion for teaching at Southern Connecticut State College, where she studied elementary education graduating in 1972. She earned her master’s degree in 1980 and was an active member of the college choir.
Linda dedicated much of her career to shaping young minds as a second and third grade teacher in the West Haven school system. She taught at Pagels Elementary School and Washington Avenue School, where she became known for her patience, warmth, and unwavering care for her students.
It was while studying at Southern that a classmate introduced her to the man who would become the love of her life. Their first conversation began with a joke—a joke that opened up to forever. Linda married Charles Gagel on August 16, 1980. From that day forward, they were inseparable, sharing a marriage built on love, laughter, friendship, and adventure. They were not only husband and wife, but truly each other’s best friends and constant companions.
Their first date perfectly reflected the life they would build together: taking Model T parts to be rebuilt. What may have seemed like an unusual outing became the foundation of a shared passion that lasted a lifetime. Together, Linda and Charles enjoyed driving their Model T Fords on tours across the country, making treasured memories with fellow enthusiasts. After Charles retired, they fulfilled another dream by driving across the United States together in 2012, embracing the joy of the journey side by side.
Later in her career, Linda continued doing what she loved through substitute teaching in Orange, where she remained dedicated to helping children learn and grow.
Above all else, Linda’s greatest joy was her family. She shared an especially close bond with her daughters and was not only their mother but their best friend. Her home was filled with love, encouragement, and support. She had an open heart for those she loved and held them close, always making family feel cherished.
Linda also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. She and Charles welcomed many collies into their home over the years, all of them rescues, giving each one the same compassion and care that she so freely gave to people throughout her life. She will be missed by her beloved grand dogs Phenix and Hailey.
Linda is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 46 years, Charles Gagel, her daughters, Victoria Arms (George) and Jillian Gagel, her siblings, Barbara Marinelli (Anthony) and Frederich Sundermann, and many beloved nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
She was predeceased by her parents, Frederich and Eleanor Sundermann, and by her sister-in-law, Hannele ‘Pat’ Sundermann.

Diane R. Grace
Diane M. Rogers Grace, known by almost everyone as Maha, born September 3, 1933 in Milford, died peacefully on July 12, 2026. The daughter of Harold Proctor Rogers and Lucille Mazeau Rogers and long-time Stratford resident, she was raised on Rivercliff Avenue in Devon, attended Milford High School and the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing. Diane was married for over 65 years to Thomas Harrington Grace and had six sons and one daughter. She finished her long nursing career at Bullard-Havens Technical High School, where she delighted in the vitality and activity of the students. A true extrovert, she was energized by her involvement with people, causes, and ideas- Square One Theatre, the Gaelic-American Club in Fairfield, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, among many others.
She is preceded in death by her sister Constance, her sons Thomas Jr, and Jeremiah, and husband Thomas. She is survived by her sons Patrick, Paul (Peter), Mark, Daniel (Lorraine) and daughter Catherine (John), and nine grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at a later date. Sundeep Kaur Gill Harper, 46, of Milford, beloved wife of Scott Harper, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Cortlandt, New York, on February 12, 1980, Sundeep was the cherished daughter of Harbhajan and Harjinder (Gakhal) Gill.
From an early age, she possessed remarkable determination, boundless compassion, and a gift for making everyone around her feel valued. A graduate of Stratford High School, Sundeep earned her bachelor’s degree in Business from Fordham University before receiving her Juris Doctor from Western New England University School of Law. She went on to establish Harper Law in downtown Milford, where she built a respected legal practice known not only for excellence and integrity, but also for the genuine kindness and empathy she extended to every client. To Sundeep, practicing law was never just a profession—it was an opportunity to help others through some of life’s most difficult moments.
Her dedication to serving others extended far beyond her law office. She was a proud member of the Milford Bar Association and The Network of Executive Professional Women, and she served on the Board of Directors for Milestones Behavioral School. She believed deeply in giving back to her community and quietly made a difference in countless lives.
While her professional accomplishments were many, the roles she cherished most were those of wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She treasured every moment with Scott and Isla, and nothing brought her greater happiness than creating a loving home and making memories with her family. She loved fiercely and gave generously of herself. Whether she was traveling to a new destination, restoring antique furniture, shopping for the perfect find, crafting something special, or discovering great food, Sundeep embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She especially cherished gathering with the ladies for brunch, celebrating life’s special moments, and sharing laughter with the people she loved. Those moments of friendship and connection brought her immense happiness and created memories that will be treasured forever.
Perhaps no chapter of her life better demonstrated her extraordinary character than her courageous battle with cancer. Through years of treatments, setbacks, and unimaginable challenges, Sundeep faced each day with remarkable strength, grace, resilience, and unwavering determination. She inspired everyone around her with her courage, her humor, and her refusal to let illness define her. Even in her most difficult moments, her first concern was always for the people she loved.
Sundeep will be remembered for her brilliant mind, generous heart, infectious laugh, sharp wit, fierce loyalty, and the incredible warmth she brought into every room she entered. She had a rare ability to make people feel welcome, understood, and loved. Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void, her legacy will continue through the countless lives she touched, the family she adored, the community she served, and the love she gave so freely.

Dorothy Ann Karpicky, age 73, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Thomas Karpicky, entered peaceful rest on July 15, 2026.
She was born on March 8, 1953 in Bridgeport and was the daughter of the late John and Wanda (Vacky) Sawicki.

David Arthur Nelson
David Arthur Nelson, 79, of Milford, CT, beloved husband of Betty Nelson, passed away on June 25, 2026. Born on July 18, 1946 in Tacoma, WA, he was the son of the late Arthur and Arline Nelson.
David was always a lover of animals, which lead to his career as a marine biologist at the Milford fisheries lab for over 40 years. This love of animals extended to the pets he shared his life with, especially his Siamese cats.
David loved going on long walks, and traveling with his wife, Betty, where Maine was a beloved destination for them.
David was also a great enthusiast of wine, and loved teaching others about the varying flavors in his courses. He loved golf and he treasured playing with his father, even playing in tournaments.
David is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Nelson; his children, Jennifer DeForge and Melissa Nelson; his grandchildren, David Deforge Jr., Shane DeForge, and Isabelle DeForge; his sister, Susan Stonaha; and his brother, Bruce Nelson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. David is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Arline.

Lynn Ann Buchmiller Novicki
Lynn Buchmiller Novicki, beloved wife of Dr. David C Novicki passed away on July 26 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the devoted mother of Ted, Alex (Piper), and Nic (Teale) as well as loving grandmother to Ben, Henry, Marley, and Rose Novicki.
She’s also survived by her sister, Joanne Dargan (Robert) and brother Gordon Buchmiller Jr. (Laurel) and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Doris Snyder Buchmiller.
A longtime resident of Orange, she graduated from Lauralton Hall, received her BS degree from Regis College and her masters and sixth-year degree in School psychology from Southern Connecticut State University. She spent her career educating children and serving as a school psychologist for over 40 years. She was always known to be the first one to help anyone in need whether it be at her job or people within her family or her friends.
Lynn had many interests throughout her life; travel, tennis, golf, biking, book group, skiing, dominoes and she was an accomplished bridge player and loved the game. She had many wonderful friends who shared these activities, including her devoted sister Joanne.
Lynn had great faith and was active in her parish, Holy Infant. She was a well-loved CCD teacher and Eucharist minister at Yale-Saint Raphaels Hospital and helped out at several local food banks.
Lynn was a great cook and multi tasker. She and David would host elaborate dinner parties for friends and family.
Lynn’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, cherishing her grandchildren, and making time with them very special.
Lynn holds a special place in so many hearts for her warm and generous nature, her positive outlook, and ability to bring out the best in all that knew her.

Edward D. O’Brien
Edward D. O’Brien, 91, of Milford, passed away peacefully in his home on June 29, 2026. Ed was the beloved husband of 63 years to Anne M. Ryan O’Brien. He was born on June 6, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Edward A. O’Brien and Anna May Quinn O’Brien.
Besides his wife Anne, Ed continues his legacy with his three children: Maureen Riordan (Dennis), Kelly Brown (Matt), and Sean O’Brien, as well as three grandchildren: Toby Poole, Tyler Riordan, and Ryan Riordan. In addition, he leaves behind his sister-in-law Maureen Mulcahy; his brother-in-law Edward Ryan; many additional dear nieces, nephews, and cousins; and close friends. Ed is predeceased by his sister Joan Flynn, as well as Frank Montemarano, who was his best friend and like a brother to him.
Ed grew up in Brooklyn, graduating from high school and then joining the military. An honorable veteran of the US Army, Ed served his country first in the US Air Force Reserves, then completed three years of active duty (1955-1958) in the US Army, mostly in Germany. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Francis College in 1962. He also supported himself through night school at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Ed and Anne were married in 1963 in Brooklyn, NY.
Aside from his family, Ed’s greatest pride was his 23 years of service with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an Assistant Special Agent in Charge. Throughout his career with the FBI, he was transferred all over the country, moving nine times, finally settling in Fairfield, Connecticut. Following his retirement from the FBI in 1986, Ed started a second career with Champion International (later International Paper) as Director of Security until his retirement in 2000. After 21 years together with Anne in Fairfield, they moved to Milford, CT, where Ed spent the past 25 years enjoying the company of his neighbors and dear friends in the Baldwin Station community. He was an active member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and a former member of the Gaelic-American Club in Fairfield. A deeply faithful Catholic, Ed served as a Eucharist minister and volunteer at Christ the Redeemer parish until its closing in 2021. He was also a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Ed was a caring husband and father, a devoted family man, hardworking, patient, kind, and accepting of all, instilling in his children his strong values and work ethic. He shared a special bond with his grandsons, taking them to annual car shows in New York, going to MLB and Bridgeport Bluefish baseball games, attending their school activities and sporting events, and serving as a Confirmation sponsor for all three boys.
Ed enjoyed traveling, planning numerous family vacations, as well as trips with Anne to FBI Society conventions across the country, many cruises, and annual visits to their timeshare in Palm Beach Shores, Florida, where he loved swimming in the pool and ocean and walks on the beach. One of Ed’s favorite and most fulfilling activities was spending time with family and friends; he was a cherished and steadfast presence at countless family celebrations throughout his lifetime.
Ed will be remembered for his outgoing personality and generosity, earning the respect of everyone he knew. He was always there to support his family members and friends, never asking for anything in return. Ed had such a big heart and will be missed profoundly by all who were lucky to know and love him.

John “Jack” Olexovitch
John “Jack” Olexovitch, of Milford, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at Connecticut Hospice, surrounded by the care and compassion of those who made his final days comfortable. Born on November 5, 1941, Jack was the beloved son of the late George and Helen Olexovitch. Jack proudly served in the US Air Force. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in his career, spending many years operating heavy equipment at Barrett Construction. He also worked at Sturm Ruger before retiring. Retirement gave Jack the opportunity to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Every winter, he and his beloved wife, Carol, looked forward to driving to Florida together, creating cherished memories along the way. Jack loved spending time on the golf course and was a gifted athlete throughout his life. Above all else, however, his greatest joy was his family. He treasured every moment spent with them, and they always came first. Jack was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Carol, as well as his brothers, George and Keith. He leaves behind his 2 brothers Paul and Mark ( Patty) many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews His loving children, Jack and his fiancée, Tricia; Scott and his wife, Susanne; and Beth Acevedo and her husband, Javier. He was a proud grandfather to Jack and his wife, Chelsea, Joseph, and Jason, and a devoted great-grandfather to Brooke and Emmy. He also leaves behind Deborah Maloney, his former daughter-in-law, who remained like a daughter to him and held a special place in his heart. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, as well as Dr. Chhabra and the Oncology and Hematology team, for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion they provided to Jack throughout his illness. Jack will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, his easygoing spirit, and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Nada Bear Ottenstein
Nada Bear Ottenstein passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026 in Woodbridge, CT. Formerly of State College, PA, she was born in Richmond, VA on February 4, 1933. Predeceased by her parents, the late Nathan and Dora (Rudlin) Bear, her brother Marvin Bear, and sister Marian Ticatch, she is survived by her husband of 69 years, Daniel Ottenstein, children Laurie Keller (Chaim), David Ottenstein (Reyna), Naomi Eisen (Robert), twelve grandchildren and twenty two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ferdinando Antino “Fred” Paladino
Ferdinando Antinio Paladino Jr. (”Fred” to all who knew him), age 82 of Milford, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Fred was born on May 6, 1944, in Miami, FL to Fred Sr. and Elvira ”Vera” (Tropeano) Paladino and grew up within a large Italian family in Port Chester, NY. With GED in hand, he started his career at Avon, eventually getting an associate degree at Westchester Community College while helping raise his children, Rich and Leslie. Working his way up to management, he became the distribution manager for the newly coined Duracell Batteries when it spun off from the Mallory battery company to Dart Industries and made its headquarters in Bethel, CT. There he invested many years of his energy and met the love of his life, the former Lucille (Allen) Creane. Marriage to Lucie brought Fred two stepchildren, Lisa and Kevin, and a move to Milford, where over 45 years together they built a life full of family, fishing and everyday pleasures. He cared for a koi pond and massive aquarium throughout his life, raised snakes, turtles and rabbits, had chatty cockatoos and adorable Pekinese pups. He grew lush gardens of vegetables and flowers and tackled home projects from his basement workshop. He became a voracious rockhound, splitting geodes for family and friends, and tumbling gemstones for Leslie’s hand-crafted jewelry. He also fished whenever and wherever he could, going out on the Sound on his boat the Lu-Sea Lady. For years he and Lucie went down to the Keys for a month with her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Michael O’Connor, to fish the clear blue seas of Islamorada, and out to the Cape where he and Michael fished off bridges, beaches and jetties. He became a lethal bowler, racking up friends in his Bowlero leagues as quickly as he did strikes. He was an excellent cook, a devoted sideline fan for his kids and grandkids and never stopped learning, most recently about the home of his forebears, ancient Rome. But Fred’s greatest passion and pride was reserved for his family, who loved him without measure in return. He and Lucie cherished their large family, most of whom lived nearby for extra time and meals together. In a word, his life was blessed, and he in turn blessed all who knew him with good food, good humor, and a steady—if macabre—take on life, one that helped him fully live the past 30 years despite considerable health challenges. Besides his wife Lucille Paladino he leaves his children Richard (Amber) Paladino of Vero Beach, FL, and Leslie McCarthy, Lisa (Mark) Hayden and Kevin (Kathy) Creane, all of Milford; grandchildren Caitlin (Luis) Dussan, Ryan (Brooke) Hayden, Sheyanne Hayden, William Hayden, Christopher Hayden, Ciara Hayden, Hunter Hayden, Conor Creane, Elizabeth Hayden, Mia Creane, Destini Hayden and Celia Hayden; great- grandchildren Sofia, Ava, Zoe, Grayson, Noah, Liam, Henry, Delaney, and Finn; and foster grandchildren Zach, Thea, Aaron, Kania and Lindsey. Henry B. Samson
Dr. Samson graduated from Hillhouse High School, Wesleyan University, and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He was fortunate to join his father in his optometry practice, and together they practiced for nearly 25 years. Henry continued happily seeing patients until retiring during COVID.
Henry and Berta were avid walkers, especially fond of the East Rock neighborhood of New Haven. Long walks gave them time to unwind from work and to enjoy the changes of the seasons. In retirement, Henry and Berta devoted great time and energy to their beautiful gardens in Woodbridge. Henry used his delicious tomatoes and fresh basil to master the art of pizza making, delighting both friends and family.
He leaves behind his school classmate and constant companion, Berta Gallin Samson, his son Michael, his daughter Dr. Leah Samson (Matthew Santillo); grandchildren Andrew and Eric Samson, Maya and Max Santillo, and his sister, Heidi D’Amato.

Robert N. Sforza
Bob was born in Bridgeport on March 5, 1947, to the late Anthony and Mary (Barberio) Sforza and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in Fairfield and earned his B.S. in Biology from the University of Bridgeport before serving in the United States Army, including service in Vietnam. He later spent many years as an engineer with Sikorsky Aircraft, from which he retired.
Bob had a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. He loved both saltwater and freshwater fishing, and he took pride in making his own rods and tying his own flies. He enjoyed the game of golf, whether he was watching a tournament or out on the course himself.
He was especially drawn to the history of Connecticut, particularly its nautical past. He expressed that interest through his art, painting ships and coastal scenes and building ships in bottles. His artwork often included wildlife, especially birds of prey, reflecting his respect for the natural world. He also studied Italian history and art, keeping a connection to his heritage through what he read and created.
Bob cared deeply for his fellow veterans and remained mindful of those who had also served. He supported organizations that helped other military veterans and took that responsibility seriously.
He is survived by his devoted sons, Adam Sforza and his wife Carol of South Carolina, and Jeremy Sforza and his wife Brooke of Trumbull, his four cherished grandchildren, Everett, Anthony, Caroline, and Benjamin; his best friend and brother, John Sforza; and several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss his steady presence, gentle humor, and kind heart.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., meeting directly at St. Mary’s Church, 70 Gulf Street, Milford. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.
John E. Soldi Sr.
John E. Soldi Sr., age 89 of Milford, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Born in Bridgeport on December 23, 1936, son of the late John and Betty Money Soldi, John had lived in Bridgeport, before moving to Milford 53 years ago. John had worked as a general contractor for over 60 years and enjoyed talking about it all the time until his retirement. He was also a musician, playing the saxophone for his band ” Chris Stevens and the Val-tones “. In later years he liked to dabble with photography and would put his photos onto canvas. When we were young, he also liked to play baseball with us in the neighborhood schoolyard. More than anything, John was all about family and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his children, Joi Theise and her husband Michael of Wallingford, Brigitte Traister and her husband Tony of Ellington, Joelle Gambardella and her husband Billy of West Haven, John E. Soldi Jr., Gary Soldi, both of Milford, Christopher Soldi of New Haven, Marc Soldi and his wife Jennifer of Wallingford, Stephen Soldi and his wife Jenn of Torrington, Jeffrey Soldi of Middletown, David Soldi of Hamden and Patrick Soldi of Milford. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives Pauline and Colleen and sisters Joyce Gonda and Corrine Jensen.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 7 at 12 noon in the Frank Polke and Son Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Rd., Fairfield with burial to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Stratford. Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 10 am until the time of services.
Joanne Polonetz Stefkovich
Joanne Polonetz Stefkovich, 72, passed away on June 17, 2026 at Bridgeport Hospital with her loving family by her side. Joanne was born on October 3, 1953 in Stamford, CT to the late John and Rita Polonetz. She was the beloved wife of Stephen J. Stefkovich.
Joanne was an intelligent and compassionate woman whose strong work ethic informed every aspect of her life. After earning a B.S. degree in Food Science from Marywood College, she went on to work as head nutritionist at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. She also studied at Yale further enhancing her background in nutrition. When Joanne’s career interest shifted to business she worked for Donnely Marketing while earning her MBA from University of Connecticut at night. She later worked for Grolier and PerkinElmer as catalog manager. As she raised her family Joanne found fulfillment as a paraprofessional supporting special education students in the Westport Public School system. Most recently, she served the students and community of St. Mary School and Church in Bethel. Joanne faced her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis with remarkable courage, grace, and resilience, inspiring those around her with her strength and determination.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joanne found great joy in her family and had an unwavering faith in the Lord. She was a talented cook who loved sharing meals with those she loved. Creative by nature, she enjoyed drawing, taught herself to paint, and spent many happy hours crafting alongside her daughter, Victoria. She also cherished time spent boating and enjoying the water with her husband Stephen and son Alex. Some of her most treasured memories were made during family vacations to Cape Cod gathering at her family’s home and creating lasting memories with those she loved.

George M. Turko
George Michael Turko of Milford, passed away July 7, 2026. He was born in Bridgeport on October 22, 1940 to the late John and Clara Turko.
George proudly served his country in the US Army and went on to a successful career at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford.
George will be sadly missed by his sister-in-law, Patricia Turko and his nieces, Janice Reckers (Lawrence) and Joan Foley (Gerald). Additional survivors include his great-nephews, Scott Foley (Jill) and Kevin Foley (Olivia), great-great nephew, Shane and great-great nieces, Quinn and Nora. George is predeceased by his brother, John Turko Jr. and his great nephew, Shawn Foley.

Frederick R. Turner
Frederick R. Turner, 84, of Orange, beloved husband of 60 years to Leatrice M. (Cardea) Turner, passed away on June 28, 2026. Born on August 24, 1941, in New Haven, CT, he was the son of the late Friedrick and Joanna (Schön) Turner.
Fred lived a life defined by love, hard work, loyalty, and devotion to family. He and his beloved wife, Leatrice, built a life together in Orange where they raised their family and created countless cherished memories.
Fred earned his Associate Degree in Business before completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Management from the University of New Haven. Fred held a long career in quality control at Ansonia Copper & Brass, retiring at the age of 64.
Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era as a base military police officer. He was also stationed at Fort Drum military installation near the Canadian border, where he faithfully carried out his duties with dedication and honor. His service reflected the deep sense of responsibility and commitment that remained with him throughout his life.
Fred had a lifelong passion for automobiles, especially antique Model A Fords. He took great pride in restoring them himself and attending local car shows. Many hours were spent working on cars with his dear friend, the late Frank Zold.
Fred’s friendships ran deep. He kept many of his childhood friends throughout his life especially Tommy Jeffers and his best friend, the late Jimmy Hogan with whom he shared his passion for motorcycles.
Fred was known for his thriftiness and heating the house with a wood fire. Countless hours were spent in the pursuit of wood to keep his family warm in the winter with the help of the late Bob Brinton.
He enjoyed cycling and treasured the time he spent riding with his daughter through the Laurel Bike Club, where he served as treasurer.
Fred lived his faith through service to others and was an active member of the Orange Lions Club where he was four times past president. As a Living Treasure honoree of Orange, he dedicated many hours generously serving his community.
Nothing brought Fred greater happiness than spending time with his family. Affectionately known as “Pa” by his grandchildren, he delighted in teaching each of his children and grandchildren how to drive—a rite of passage they will always remember. He treasured family fishing trips, Left Right Center games, family Easter egg hunts and annual vacations to Cape Cod. His hobbies were baking chocolate chip cookies, building LEGO creations, and playing Aggravation.
Fred had a mischievous sense of humor that could brighten any room. Whether helping someone in need, tackling a new project, or lending a hand to family and friends, Fred was known for his generosity, determination, and unwavering loyalty. He was hardworking, loving, driven, and deeply devoted to those he loved. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his memory will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
In addition to his beloved wife, Leatrice, he is survived by his children, Dawn (James) Turner-Castelli, and Heidi (Keith) Namiot; grandchildren, Henry Namiot, Charles “Chuckie” Namiot, and Vivienne “Vivi” Namiot; siblings-in-law, Frank (Judy) Cardea and their children; cousins, Helga Deisinger, Walli Meschuck, Madeline (David) Tunison, and his cousin’s children. John C. Van Arman
John Van Arman, age 84, of Orange, passed away on July 17th, 2026. Born on June 28th, 1942, in Derby, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Ralph Andrew Van Arman and Emma McKinnon Van Arman. He was the beloved husband of nearly 57 years to Ruth Kilfeather Van Arman.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army before returning home to build a life in Orange. An entrepreneur with a strong work ethic, he founded John Van Arman, Inc., an oil business that reflected his commitment to servicing his neighbors. Over the years, he also owned a septic installation and repair business and later served the Town of Orange as superintendent overseeing municipal buildings and wastewater operations. No matter what the job was, John approached every challenge with determination.
Service to others was woven throughout John’s life. He was a volunteer firefighter, an active member of the Milford Elks Lodge, and the Orange Rotary Club where he served as president and generously gave his time as a volunteer at the Orange Country Fair. Whether helping a friend, lending a tool, or offering advise, John was known as someone who would always lend a helping hand.
John had a gift for making people laugh and never met a stranger. He was a true people person whose humor, generosity, and welcoming nature made others feel at ease. A creative thinker and lifelong tinkerer, he enjoyed solving problems, fixing things, and finding new ways to make life a little better.
He found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful adventures. John loved bluegrass music and met the love of his life, Ruth, while square-dancing, a story they treasured throughout their marriage. Together they shared many adventures, including a memorable two-month motorhome trip to Alaska.
At home, one of his favorite family traditions was gathering around the table for John’s Sunday pancakes and dinners, meals that were as much about togetherness as they were about good food.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Kilfeather Van Arman and his children, Tracy Van Arman Ovesny (Joseph), Lynn Van Arman Wright (Tom), and Ralph Edward Van Arman. He is also survived by his grandchildren Cody Wright (Ellie), Tucker Wright and Joseph Ovesny Jr. He is also survived by his siblings Betsy Van Arman Foye and Jay Van Arman (Debra).

John E. Wildman
John E. Wildman, age 82, of Milford, beloved husband of 59 years to Louise (Gillotti) Wildman, entered into peaceful rest on July 24, 2026. He was born on September 8, 1943, in Bridgeport. John was the son of the late Russell E. and Irma C. (Mead) Wildman. He proudly served his country as a MP and paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. Following his military service, John worked as a lineman foreman for SNET for more than 27 years. He later continued his career with KTI Utility Construction until his retirement.
John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. John’s greatest joy in life was being called, “Pop Pop”, by his grandchildren. He cherished every opportunity to cheer them on at all their sporting events. He was an avid fan of the New York Jets, UCONN men’s basketball, and Florida State University football. John enjoyed antique cars, especially his 1955 Thunderbird and attending Carlisle car shows with friends. He also enjoyed time spent with his dog, Summer, and trips to the casino. He was a proud member of the VFW Devon Post #7788. He will be most remembered for his friendly smile and his helping hand to everyone he knew.
In addition to his devoted wife, Louise, John is survived by his loving children, Kimberly L. Wildman of Milford and Jill C. Matos and her husband, Robert, of Oxford; his three grandchildren, Brendan A. Matos, Allie C. Matos, and Rachel A. Matos; his brothers- and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister. Services will be private.
