Obituaries from the June 4, 2026 Issue

Martin Burke

Martin “Marty” Burke, 67, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. With his passing, he leaves behind his loving wife of 42 years, Cheryl, and his children Martin and Erin Burke. Martin was predeceased by his parents Charles Jr. and Dorothy Burke, as well as his brother William Burke.

Martin cared deeply for his family and did everything to protect them as well as help them grow. He enjoyed many hobbies, especially those he could share with loved ones. He loved to travel every weekend to take his young family Soap Box Derby racing, watching NASCAR at the tracks or on TV, and was also an excellent cook, particularly with a grill and a smoker. Marty took his skills with smoking different meats almost as seriously as his pizza making ability. He was also no stranger to a fishing pole, starting at a very young age. Marty was always the life of the party and made sure that everyone was happy and full.

Martin started working very early in life at AVCO Lycoming in Stratford before joining Local 42 with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Martin traveled the country working tirelessly. Through rain, snow, and extreme heat or cold, Marty and his team kept improving our electrical grid. Marty was proud of his work, especially of the friends that were made along the way. Their bonds were so strong that they became family. Even after retiring in August of 2023, he still maintained these bonds and continually checked in with his “buddies.”

In earlier years Marty enjoyed his time as a member in the Trans Vans Club. And yes, towed a bar behind the van, of course. He loved all the times that were had and memories that were made. Referred to mostly as the “Van Club Days” he loved to share his stories and reminisce about all the fun they had.

Martin was a proud Life Member of the Milford Elks Lodge #1589. He supported the lodge and all its members continually, dating back to “old lodge” days. The entire family is thankful for the love and support from the Lodge and its members over the years. We all look forward to many more years of that feeling.

In addition to his loving wife and children, Martin is survived by his brothers Michael (Ginny) Burke and Charles Burke III, as well as his sister-in-law Karen (Rocky) Settanni, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family is being cared for by the staff at West Haven Funeral Home.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday May 13, 2026, from 4-7 p.m. at West Haven Funeral Home, 662 Savin Ave., West Haven, CT. An Elks Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Eileen Bridget Cohen

Eileen Bridget Cohen, 75, passed away on May 8, 2026, in Milford, Connecticut. A woman of deep faith and quiet grace, she devoted her life to caring for others: as a nurse, a teacher, a volunteer, and above all, as a wife, mother, and grandmama who loved without condition.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Stamford, Connecticut, Eileen trained at the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing in Boston and went on to work as a registered nurse at Children’s Hospital. She earned a Master’s in Nursing Education from Villanova University, taught as an associate professor at St. Vincent’s Hospital, an adjunct professor at Fairfield University and Quinnipiac University, and brought her expertise to nursing administration at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Outside of work, Eileen gave herself to service just as fully. She traveled to rural Appalachia as a visiting nurse, treating miners with black lung disease, and founded a clogging group for young girls to provide them shelter and safety. She later volunteered at the VA hospital and local homeless shelters.

She found joy in traveling the world with her husband, Neal, drawn to learning new cultures and appreciating art and music wherever they went. At home, she nurtured friendships formed in childhood, in nursing, and in the Morris folk dancing group, and kept them close throughout her life. She loved time in nature, especially long walks by the water in Milford. She attended Catholic Mass every Sunday, her faith the steady foundation beneath everything she did.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and William Rowan, and her brother Dennis Rowan.

She was generous with her time, accepting of everyone, and known for giving people her full, undivided attention. She had an unwavering devotion to her family, near and extended, and she especially cherished being a grandmama to her grandson Eddie. Louis was survived by his loving wife Carol Yoney Paolillo; his children, Kathy Heltke, Louis Paolillo (Chrissy), Susan Lamparelli (Rich), Barbara Butler (Jerry), Matt Peterson (Samantha) and Jess Lombardi; his grandchildren David Heltke, Daniel Heltke, Jerry Butler, Lauren Lamparelli, Nicole Lamparelli, Alexandra Butler, and Louis Paolillo; great-grandchildren Blake, Bryce, and Cayden; sister-in-law Hazel Paolillo, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Louis was predeceased by his brothers, Ralph Paolillo Jr. and Anthony Paolillo.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Louis served with distinction from 1952 to 1956. Selected for rigorous training in Electronic and Airborne Radar at Keesler AFB, he was assigned to the 64th Fighter Squadron at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska, an experience that laid the foundation for a lifelong career in defense engineering. That career unfolded almost entirely at Norden Systems from 1959 to 1994, where he rose to Senior Program Planner, overseeing a staff of 250 on landmark programs for artillery defense systems. His spirit of service and leadership continued well into retirement when he served as President of his Condo Board, looking after his neighbors with the same quiet dedication.
Lou was a legendary figure in East Haven athletics. A three-sport letterman in football, basketball and baseball, he played both offense and defense in the era of leather helmets and minimal padding, a testament to his toughness. As a freshman, he was called up to start at quarterback on Thanksgiving Day, 1946, when the Easties upset Branford 12-6. In 1997, he joined his brother Ralph in the East Haven Athletic Hall of Fame. That competitive fire never dimmed; it simply moved to the sidelines. Lou was a constant presence in his children’s lives, coaching and cheering them on from Little League through college.

An avid history buff, Lou found great joy in exploring the world with Carol. He took pride in being Carol’s steady guide, ensuring every destination was experienced to the fullest.

Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Lou’s true masterpiece was the life he built with his family. Carol was the center of his world, but he lived for the moments when his home was filled with the people he loved; whether hosting a party, a summer picnic, a family trip, or cooking breakfast Sunday mornings for the “Breakfast Club”. He had a rare gift for making every person who walked through his door feel genuinely welcomed.

He was a man of immense generosity and grace who rarely criticized or judged, preferring instead to lead by example. A man of his word and a steady presence in the lives of many, he gave freely of his heart and his home, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and unwavering love.
