A Look Back: Cows Wandering

By Priscilla Searles

Cows wandered freely on Chestnut Ridge Road in Orange during the 1920s. Photo courtesy of the Doris Russell collection.

This 1920s photo is a reminder that Orange was once a farm town. Judging by the cows running around wherever they care to wander makes one think that the Orange of yesterday has very little in common with 2021. This was taken on Chestnut Ridge Road; note that the street is a narrow dirt path. Ah, the good old days.

If you have a vintage photo of Orange and are willing to loan it to Town Historian Priscilla Searles, contact her at publisher@theorangetimes.com. All photos on loan will be scanned, with the scan becoming the property of the Orange Historical Society. Originals will be returned.
