Stew Leonard’s May Come To Orange After All

A rumor is circulating in Orange that grocery store chain Stew Leonard’s may come to the plaza in town formerly occupied by the Christmas Tree Shops.

The Milford-Orange Times was had not received a reply to a request for comment from a Stew Leonard’s representative as of Friday.

“We are so excited to hear that Stew Leonard’s is possibly coming to Orange. It will be great for us and other small businesses in the area and the entire community,” said Renee Mizrahi, owner of Renee’s Resale Clothing Outlet. The outlet is located in the plaza.

The storefront formerly filled by the Christmas Tree Shops is now the location of a Bargain House furniture outlet. There is another large vacant building in the plaza that used to be the home of arts and crafts store A.C. Moore.

It would not be first time Stew Leonard’s, which was founded in Norwalk, has eyed Orange. The company bought a parcel of land on Marsh Hill Road – not far from the Christmas Tree Plaza – in 1996, but abandoned plans to build there in 2010 after a protracted battle against local opposition that resulted in the state Supreme Court overturning the grocer’s wetlands approval.

  1. I have been a Milford resident for 27 years. Prior to that I was born and lived in Norwalk. I was so disappointed when Stew’s was not able to build on Marsh Hill Rd. I would LOVE to have the store in the Christmas Tree Plaza. Would definitely be there at least once a week, if not more. I make Trips to Norwalk now to shop there but it would be great to have them closer!

  2. This is great news. After stop and shop blocked their first shot with no help from the town of Orange. I hope they get in this time

    • You got that right, Mike. Those folks on Indian River Rd that formed a group to block Stew with Stop and Shops help sure loved having a now bankrupt junk store (AKA Christmas Tree Shop) there, didn’t they

  3. Great, can’t wait to see it happen. I am a big fan of the Stew Leonard’s store 😋.

Plus, it will be great to see more jobs in the area.

  4. I was a reporter for WELI in 1996-97 when those Planning/Zoning meetings happened. I was disgusted at the way people treated Stu Jr during those, mocking his son’s drowning. It was disgraceful. I would never have gone back but at least here with a ready built property nobody will be underhanded and try to screw him.

  5. I go to Norwalk with my friend we try to go once a month I use to live in Norwalk awhile back. I miss shopping at Stews, now I heard he,s finally coming to orange CT , I hope everything goes well in orange CT for him this is a great opportunity for people in Milford ct, where I live now. Good Luck Lorna P.
