It’s hard to believe that August is already upon us. As the days of summer gently slip by, I hope each of you is enjoying these warm months, making memories with family and friends, soaking in the sunshine and finding joy in the simple pleasures that make life in our community special. There’s still time to savor the last stretch of summer before fall returns.
This past month brought a truly historic milestone: the 250th anniversary of our great nation’s founding. Orange shone brightly in honoring America’s rich history with a memorable America 250 celebration complete with patriotic music, a powerful fireworks display, community spirit and heartfelt tributes that reminded us all why we are so blessed to call the US home. Thank you to everyone involved for creating such a meaningful experience.
While we celebrate our nation’s birthday, let’s also embrace the best of what our local community offers right now. Make time to visit the Orange Community Farmers’ Market, held Thursdays through September at the fairgrounds pavilion. It’s a wonderful way to support our hardworking local farms, enjoy fresh produce and connect with neighbors. And of course, we’re all looking forward to that sweet Connecticut corn – there’s nothing quite like it.
In the weeks and months ahead, local and state political conversations will naturally pick up. Mailings, emails, texts and even friendly knocks at the door will bring candidates and ideas into our homes. This is democracy in action: an opportunity to listen, learn and thoughtfully consider the visions being shared for our future.
Life brings struggles at times, and it’s easy to feel angry, disconnected or even that our voice won’t matter. Yet within each of us lies far greater strength and potential than we often realize. Our future belongs to us – shaped by our shared values, dreams and hopes. We live in a remarkable time where we still hold the freedom to make choices, to vote for those who best represent our principles and to work together for positive change when things aren’t going as planned.
As President Ronald Reagan wisely reminded us, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It must be fought for and defended by each generation.”
Reagan also emphasized that man is not free unless government is limited. These words ring as true today as ever. Our freedoms – to speak, to choose, to build the life we envision – are among our most precious gifts. They are not guaranteed by inheritance alone; they require our active care and participation.
As we step into these final weeks of summer and look toward the opportunities ahead, let’s carry forward that spirit of gratitude, resilience and civic engagement. Enjoy the remaining sunny days, support one another, stay informed on the issues that matter to our town and state, and approach the future with confidence.
Together, in Orange and across this blessed nation, we have every reason to believe in tomorrow. Here’s to making the most of it – positively, purposefully and united. God bless you, your families, our community and the United States of America.
