Mary C. Nylen

Mary C. Nylen, 103, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Hubert Nylen, passed away on November 28, 2022. Born on March 1, 1919, in Waterbury, CT, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Riccardi) Cianciolo.

In addition to her life as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt, great great aunt, Mary also attended the Perry School of Business and worked for years at Clayton’s and Michael’s Jewelers. She was an avid golfer well into her eighties and an equally avid UCONN Huskies fan (she considered both Tiger Woods and Diana Taurasi to be extended family).

For over half of a century, Mary’s home served as a perpetual hub for the extended Cianciolo family—a place that was both a connection to the past and a refuge in the tumultuous present. It was where you stopped to rinse the sand from your feet after swimming at the beach. It was where you went for a piece of Entenmann’s cake (the secret to Mary’s longevity). It was where you listened to Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and where you watched the bygone stars of the silver screen dance in technicolor across the television in the den. It was where you went when you had nowhere else to go and you needed kindness and care and the quiet presence of someone who doled these rare gifts out every moment of her 103 years of life. In other words, it was home—not just for Mary and her immediate family, but for so many who needed Mary as a touchstone to something real and genuine and comforting. With her passing, her family mourns the disappearance of so much more than an individual, but they also celebrate the life that made this haven possible and necessary.

Mary is survived by her children, Richard Nylen and Lynn (James) Miranda; her grandchildren, Richard (Wendy) and Sotheary Nylen, and James (Lauren) and Matthew Miranda; her great grandchildren, Luna, Marco, Avner, and Kellan. She is also survived by her sister, Joan, and all of her cherished nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 2, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Saint Ann Church (Saint Raphael Parish) 501 Naugatuck Ave., Milford, CT (MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH). Interment will follow at Saint Mary Cemetery, Buckingham Ave., Milford, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Food2Kids at www.milfordfood2kids.org.

Jack Palumbo

Jack Palumbo, 93, of Milford, beloved husband of Loretta Palumbo, entered into eternal rest on December 2, 2022. Born on April 14, 1929 in New Haven, he was the son of the late Anthony and Josephine Palumbo and lived on Judson Avenue in New Haven.

Jack graduated from Commercial High School. He was called to active duty during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from his service in Korea on April 24, 1952.

He married Loretta Masella on September 4, 1954 and immediately became a part of the huge Masella Family who were also from Judson Avenue in New Haven.

He was a construction foreman for the New Haven Railroad in the Bridge and Building Department and worked there for over 25 years. He continued to work at the New Haven Parking Authority and was an active member of the SEIU Local 32 BJ. His most personally endeared employment was at Subway World Headquarters in Milford, CT. He loved being a part of the Subway community and was loved and adored. Everyone enjoyed working with him. A Department Head at Subway said, “ Jack was a joy to be around”. He always had a smile and kind word to offer.

He loved to travel to Florida and the Caribbean with his family, and especially looked forward to Subway Convention travel to Hawaii, Las Vegas, and California.

He mostly loved his Italian heritage and a big Sunday gathering with all his children, grandsons, and great grandchildren. He encouraged us to keep this precious tradition, and a Sunday “spectacular” was always prepared and enjoyed down to the last round of demitasse with Sambuca and a small lemon slice by his cup.

He adored his grandsons, Paul, Jr. and Chris and was so proud of them and the four greatgrandchildren he was blessed to have. Nicholas Jack, Roman, Chloe, and Charlotte all loved Grandpa Jack.

Jack loved the shores of Long Island Sound and he taught us all to love it going back to the wonderful days spent as a family at the Double Beach Club in Branford.

Jack always had a smile on his face even when it was hard for him to smile. His smile brought us individual comfort during these hardest of days we were blessed with his presence. His smile was like the sun. He loved everybody. To know Jack is to love Jack. He was not only a part of the greatest generation…he was a great man who was deeply loved and will be forever cherished in our hearts, until we meet again.

Along with his wife, Jack leaves behind his children, Joanne (Paul) Landino and John (Lisa) Palumbo; grandchildren, Paul (Kristen) Landino Jr. and Christopher (Hilary) Landino; great grandchildren, Nicholas Jack, Roman, Chloe, and Charlotte Landino; and extended family and friends.

Honorable John J. Ronan

Honorable John J. Ronan, 90, of Milford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at his home on November 17, 2022.

Born on November 3, 1932 in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Ryan) Ronan. He graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School in 1950 and earned his B.S.S. from Fairfield University in 1954.  Upon graduation from college, he entered active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and served until June 1960.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.  He attended the University of Connecticut Law School as an evening student while working full-time in a variety of positions at Southern New England Telephone Company in New Haven.  He earned his Juris Doctor in June 1963, and was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in August 1963.  For the next 20 years, John served in private practice with Attorney Richard H. Lynch in Milford, CT.  John often referred to Dick Lynch as a mentor and credited Dick with instilling him with the virtues of fairness, hard work and dedication to the legal profession.   John also served as a part-time prosecutor in the state court system from 1967 until 1984.

John was sworn in as a Superior Court Judge by Governor William A. O’Neill as on May 1, 1984.  During his career on the bench, he served as a judge in the Middlesex, Hartford, Stamford, Fairfield and New Haven Judicial Districts.  In addition to his courtroom assignments, he served as Chief Administrative Judge of the Criminal Division of the Superior Court from 1987 until 1999.  At that time, he was appointed as Deputy Chief Court Administrator by then Chief Justice, Robert Callahan and Chief Court Administrator, Robert C. Leuba.  He was also designated to lead or serve on many committees and task forces that were focused on reforming the criminal justice system in Connecticut.  He often reflected on the privilege of being respected as a fair, just, and thoughtful jurist by members of the judiciary and lawyers on both sides of a case and truly appreciated the opportunity to share his professional experiences and mentor others in the legal community.

Judge Ronan, who was widely known as “JR” and “Pop” to family members, was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. For those who knew John, he was a devout Catholic and proud Marine who thoroughly embraced his duties to the community outside of his work.  The Milford courthouse was a second home, where aside from serving as a Judge Trial Referee for nearly two decades, he maintained close relationships with his extended family. His career only came second to the love he shared for his wife Arlene, family, and friends. He enjoyed giggling at the day’s Peanuts comic, sharing a good joke with court staff and fellow attorneys, and rooting for (or criticizing) the NY Giants and University of Notre Dame football. He was one of a kind and was known for his honesty, integrity, compassion and fairness to those around him.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene McDonagh Ronan and is survived by their four children, Kevin (Lori) Ronan of Raymond, ME; Ryan (Jeena) Ronan of Scottsdale, AZ; MaryEllen (Geoff) Knotwell of Milford, CT; and Elizabeth (Chris) Duryea of New Haven, CT; as well as his three beloved grandsons, Nicholas Ronan, Geoffrey Knotwell and Trevor Knotwell.  He will be deeply missed.

Marianna Nicole Triolo

Marianna Nicole Triolo, of Milford, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 28th, 2022 in her home, surrounded by her family, after a long fight with ovarian cancer. Marianna, born on October 20th, 1993 in Queens, New York, is survived by her mother, Grace; her father, Alan; younger brother, Stephen; younger sister, Kelly; and sister-in-law, Michelle. Marianna was also a proud dog mom to two energetic pups, Rosie and Rudy.

Marianna thrived on finding new hobbies and interests and was always open to new experiences. Her wide range of hobbies included rock hounding and tumbling, makeup artistry, hiking, taking care of her plants, and traveling – all of which were documented on her TikTok. Her biggest passion, however, was helping people. When she was just 14 years old, Marianna started volunteering at Yale, delivering balloons and gifts to patients. Marianna went on several service trips across the country in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Alaska. Her love of service even took her overseas to Poland. While in college, she taught religious education and tutored other students. During her fight with ovarian cancer, Marianna visited several medical schools to educate students and raise awareness of the early signs and symptoms of the disease.

Marianna attended Seton Hall University, and while studying for her B.S. in nursing, she founded the school’s first ever all-female a cappella group. Marianna landed her dream job as a registered nurse at Yale Smilow Cancer Hospital where she was able to provide phenomenal care, compassion, and respect for her patients and advocate for the needs of those who were traveling a very similar journey to her own.

Everyone who met Marianna, even for just a few moments, can attest to the brightness and love for life she carried with her. She had a presence that made people feel safe and cared for, taught them that it was okay to be different, and brought out the confidence of even the shyest person. Marianna’s strongest attribute was making people laugh and anyone who had the pleasure to meet her was able to leave with a story to tell and an exuberant memory. She could light up any room she walked into like no one else could. Even during the most difficult parts of her illness, Marianna could always find the humor in a situation, more often than not leading to belly laughs. Her smile, her laugh, her faith, and her tenacity made Marianna a beacon of joy and positivity, which will be encapsulated in stories and memories that her family and friends will cherish forever.

Marianna has touched countless lives in her 29 years on Earth, and there is absolutely no doubt that her legacy will continue to touch countless more as people share her story and celebrate her life. Please join the Triolo Family in celebrating Marianna’s life on Tuesday, December 6th, 2022 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home at 106 Broad St, Milford, CT 06460. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 6th, 2022, at 1:30 pm at St. Mary Church, 70 Gulf St, Milford, CT 06460.

In lieu of flowers, please donate a gift card to Logee’s Plants for Home and Garden to help bring Marianna’s memorial garden to life.

If you are interested in attending the reception at St. Agnes Hall after the services, please respond to the survey, linked here so we can estimate a headcount.
