Robert “Bobby” Paul Auger

Robert Auger, known to those who loved him as “Bobby”, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2023, at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT. Bobby was born on May 3, 1949, in Bridgeport, CT to the late Walter and Ethel Auger.

Bobby held a few positions early in his career, including Marlin Firearms at both the New Haven and North Haven locations as well as Avco Lycoming in Stratford. Afterward, Bobby worked for the City of Milford for over 35 years, a position that allowed him to serve the city he loved and meet many of its fellow residents.

Upon his retirement, Bobby began working as the Ramp Attendant for Milford Lisman Landing Marina. He looked forward each summer to spending time in the sun and going above and beyond to assist the boaters, while making friends with the locals who visited the dock.

Bobby was a proud Milford resident who was a fixture in the community both through his service with the City of Milford and his support of local small businesses and participation in community events. He never failed to try a new bakery or restaurant in town, and was sure to deliver samples to his loved ones.

Another highlight of his summers was attending the Milford Oyster Festival, where he enjoyed catching up with friends, striking up a friendly conversation with a fellow festival-goer, visiting the local arts and crafts tables, and taking every opportunity to share his witty humor and corny jokes along the way.

Bobby was an avid sports fan who had an encyclopedic knowledge of sports trivia that spanned several decades and numerous types of sports. He never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite teams, chief among these the Atlanta Braves, New York Giants, Montreal Canadiens, and UConn Men’s and Women’s basketball teams. Bobby had a passion for reading books and music, endlessly adding to his impressive collections.

As passionate as Bobby was about his hopes for the Braves winning another World Series, there was nothing he loved more than his family. Bobby never missed a holiday, anniversary, or special occasion and he always understood the importance of keeping family traditions alive. Bobby was generous, kind, and loving to all those he met.

Bobby is survived by his brother, Richard Auger and his wife, Janet of Milford; his nephew, Daniel Auger and his wife, Becky of Washington DC; and his niece, Jennifer Mirto, her husband, Tommy and their son, Jack of Milford. The family is especially grateful for the care given to Bobby by Dr. Boffa, as well as the team of doctors and nurses from Smilow Cancer Hospital and Connecticut Hospice. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

To honor Bobby’s life and service to the Milford community, a Memorial Service Gathering is to be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, at Cody White Funeral Home (107 Broad St, Milford CT 06460) from 3 to 6 p.m.

Craig R. Dunna

Craig R. Dunna, 78, of Milford, a veteran of the horrific Battle of Ia Drang Valley in 1965, the first major fight between U.S. and North Vietnamese forces, died on May 27 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a years-long battle with cancer.

Craig was born in Bridgeport on March 8, 1945, to Frank and Alice Blair Dunna and graduated from Stratford High School, where he played football, in 1963. He soon, as he said, was “humping artillery shells” in the Ia Drang, a battle depicted in the 2002 Mel Gibson movie, “We Were Soldiers.” Like many of the 1st Cavalry Division soldiers he fought with, he was barely out of high school. Fifty-eight years later, he was still proudly telling its stories.

He is survived by his still-smitten wife of almost 55 years, Diana, for whose late father, Jimmy Schembari, he long worked at the Beach Dry Cleaners in Milford; his beloved sister, Laurie Dunna Lomartere of South Carolina; his coffee buddy mother-in-law, Mary of Milford; her son, Jim, and his wife, Christine Negroni of Old Greenwich; niece Marian Schembari, her husband, Elliot Speed, and daughter, June Schembari of Oregon; nephew Antonio Schembari and his wife, Dr. Jenae Linville of New York; nephew Samuel Schembari of Michigan; nephew Joseph Schembari of Michigan; a godson, Richard Cable of Orange; and more friends he made laugh than his widow could afford to list in a pay-by-the inch death notice. He was one good guy.

For years, Craig got Mary’s pool ready for her summer family gatherings. Today she wants to tearfully announce that everyone should leave their towels at home. The pool is now closed.

Per Craig’s wishes, all services will be private. Those wanting to make a donation in his memory may do so to the Ia Drang Scholarship, at 1st Cavalry Division Association, 302 N. Main St., Copperas Cove, Texas 76522.

Lavenia Robertson

Lavenia Green Faulkner Robertson of Milford CT passed away at CT Hospice in Branford on June 18, 2023 a little over a month shy of her 96th birthday. Known as Beanie to some, Memi to others and mom to her seven children, she was born in Alert, Sandy Creek Township, Franklin County, North Carolina on July 24, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Sidney Franklin Faulkner, and Lelia Hale Faulkner.

Lavenia was nicknamed Veanie and then Beanie by her older sister Pat who was too young when Beanie was born to pronounce Lavenia. As a very young child, Beanie remembered having ice cream suppers at her grandparents’ home. In the early 30’s, however, her grandparents lost their farm and life became very hard as it did for many during the Great Depression. Her family moved eight times, always staying in the community. Food was often scarce. Sometimes all they had to eat was peanut butter and Karo syrup on a biscuit. When she was old enough, she went to work in the fields alongside her mother and brothers stripping tobacco and chopping cotton. What sustained her was the love and faith of her parents along with family stories, sibling pranks, laughter, and school. Her mother, who could not read or write at the time, wanted her daughter to have an education so she sent Beanie to school. It wasn’t hard to make her go every day. She loved school. With her natural curiosity and encyclopedic memory, she excelled. Plus, she made lifelong friends. By the time she was in the eighth grade, she was almost six foot tall with long auburn hair. She was a striking young woman who knew so many people in the community and was so well trusted that at election time she was allowed to sit in the room where people voted and vouch for those who could not sign their names.

After graduation from Gold Sand High in 1944 where she was a National Honor Society member as a well as a champion basketball player, she moved to Henderson NC to pursue a career with the US Cadet Nursing Corps. While waiting to meet the age requirement, she got a job in a textile mill. A year later, she met the love of her life, a handsome young marine just home from the South Pacific. They met and married in less than a week on Christmas Eve 1945. It was a whirlwind courtship that turned into a 57 year marriage. Six months after she married, she and her husband, James P. Robertson, left NC and moved to Bridgeport CT, a rapidly growing industrial and manufacturing center. Four years later with three children in tow and one on the way she and her husband moved into their home in Stratford CT. They didn’t have furniture but they had a home. She loved her new home and she loved living in Stratford. She raised her seven children there and considered them her greatest achievement. She wanted them to become loving, caring, honest, and responsible individuals who knew right from wrong. She told her children she would always love them no matter what they did. She gave them her unconditional love. She also told them, however, that if they did something wrong, she was going to let them know. True to her word, she did. She was proud of her children and would often tell them “I love you with all my heart.”

In the 1960’s she went to work, first working part time in retail at Alexander’s at the Milford Post Mall and then at Brooks Hirsh in Fairfield. She moved on to a full-time position in the accounting department at the Acme United Corporation where she remained until she retired at age 70. She enjoyed working and had fond memories of her many co-workers. At work, she was known as Memi. This was the nickname her husband gave her shortly after they met. He did not care for the nickname Beanie. It simply didn’t fit her tall graceful stature.

She loved to sew. She could combine or rework a pattern to give it her own flare. When her children
were young, she made most of their clothes. She enjoyed decorating, and was passionate about gardening. Her yard was filled with beautiful flowers. She loved to shop for presents and little treasures and delighted in receiving them. She was also an avid reader. It was not unusual for her to be reading two and sometimes three books at a time. Her mother once said if they made a statue of her, she would have to have a book in her hand.

She will be remembered for her beauty, grace, charm and incredible memory. She was great at Jeopardy
and often knew more than Ancestry about her many relatives.

She is survived by her children Juan P (Julianne) of Long Beach, CA; Paula Denike (James) of Newtown, CT; Cheri Scholl of Milford, CT; Timothy (Kate) of Phoenix, AZ; Russell (Jing) of San Bernardino, CA; son-in-law, Thomas Bryk, Derby, CT; sister-in-law, Carolyn Faulkner of Franklin, VA; dear friend, Andrew Lerer, NJ; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, two nieces and three nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Paul Robertson, of Stratford, CT; son Donald of NYC; daughter Kyle Bryk of Manassas, VA, her son-in-law, William P. Scholl of Milford who welcomed her into his home for the last 10 years of her life. She was also predeceased by her brother, David Lee (Fannie) of Rolesville, NC; Sidney Franklin (Fayelene) of Henderson, NC; Charles Fenner (Gladys) of Butner, NC; sister Pattie Mae of Alert, NC and one grandchild.

“A great Lady has passed”

Sharon Rutledge

Sharon Rutledge, 63, was encircled by her devoted family and friends on June 2, 2023, when although far too soon and unexpectedly, she received her angel wings.

Sharon is the cherished wife of Michael, devoted mother to Sara (Mark) Kaminski, Michael and Andrew and loving sister to Doreen Mullin and John (Susan) Brosnahan. Ahma’s memory will always be cherished by her grandchildren, Gavin and Caden Kaminski. Aunt Shasha is an aunt to many nieces and nephews, but had a very special bond with Erin (Patrick) Sierer and Kelly (Josh) Hoyt. Sharon was predeceased by her parents Lorraine and John V. Brosnahan, who welcomed her into heaven, alongside her best friend Diane Fowler.

Sharon was her grandson’s biggest fan both on and off the fields and courses. She never missed an opportunity to see them, even if it was from a far. Her family was her life. She enjoyed meeting her great nieces, Teagan, and Emerson at the diner and watching their recital videos, getting a taste of the girly things that she oh so adored! Her door was always open for picnics with her extended firehouse family, Gavin and Caden’s buddies, Sara and Mark’s “framily”, and anyone else who needed to stop by for a coffee, a dip in the pool, or a fire pit. She loved to entertain and share her beautiful space with others. (And boy did she love a good gossip session on her patio!)

More recently Sharon, the athlete (LOL), fell in love with pickleball. Sara and her were a dynamic duo, and fierce competition for many. Mike and Andrew were beginning to follow her lead, and together the family was going to be an unstoppable pickleball force.

Sharon, the traveler, enjoyed the thought of adventures, and when she mustered up the courage, she was able to embark on several. Her trip to Ireland was the ultimate experience for her and Mike. Together they were able to visit their extended family and pay homage to their “homeland”. Sharon and Mike loved exploring Block Island and were looking forward to sharing this special place with dear friends. Recently Sharon and her “Minnie Me”, had the mother-daughter trip of a lifetime to Disney, where they made memories that last forever.

Sharon enjoyed walking Gulf Beach with Mike and her friends, spending countless hours searching for sea glass and oyster shells. She was the proud creator of Blue Point Designs, a hobby turned cherished local business. Sharon, the artist, dedicated most of her weekend days creating personalized oyster shells and home decor for her many customers and community friends. She was passionate about Blue Point, her family will find a way to continue to share her creations with the community.

Sharon is a woman who truly personifies the “Big Heart” of our city motto. She is known to many as the creator and dedicated admin behind the You Know You Live In Milford Facebook page, which gained a following of nearly 30,000 community members. This page was a second “home” to her. She devoted countless hours ensuring her community stayed informed and connected. Sharon, the community leader, inspired all of Milford to decorate street signs during a pandemic, to bring a sense of community, beauty, and peace to our small city during a tough time. In the words of Heidi Borselle, “Sharon was a gem and a community treasure, and will be missed beyond measure.”

The family would like to extend a very big thank you to the Milford Fire Department and the nurses and doctors in the Milford Hospital ER and ICU for making this incredibly difficult time, just a little easier. Lastly, the support shown by the Greenwich Fire Department has provided the family with a deep sense of love and security, that they will forever be grateful for, words of thanks are just not even enough.

The community is invited to celebrate Sharon at her favorite place, Gulf Beach in Milford, CT. on Tuesday June 6, 2023 anytime between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm, and anyone who wishes to say a few words, is welcome to. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to an agency very close to Sharon’s heart. Circle of Hope K9 Rescue is a nonprofit, looking to place as many unwanted pups and dogs, like Sharon’s Henry, Roz, and Sylvie, into their forever homes.
